Nichelle Nichols passed away today at age 89. Any fan of Star Trek can attest to her on screen contributions to the series as one of the core crew. She often spoke of wanting to leave the show, but was encouraged to stay by Dr. Martin Luther King because of the great example that she presented as not just a future, equal partner on a star ship, but also playing an important role in a popular TV series. The Kirk/Uhura kiss in “Plato's Stepchildren” on November 22, 1968, was the first interracial kiss on TV.
