The Miami Heat released their Summer League roster yesterday. It includes their lone draft pick at #27, Nikola Jovic. (Remember that they forfeited their 2nd round pick.) No ACC players. Most of the team will debut this weekend in the aforementioned California Classic. Second-year players Omer Yurtseven and Marcus Garrett will play in Las Vegas only, starting next week.

Not sure why, but more sources are going into the Summer League roster tracker business. Sports Illustrated might do a good job. I linked to Hoop Obsession last year, but sometimes the work is highly speculative.

The Denver Nuggets have made a shrewd move, signing Jack White to a summer league contract! https://www.si.com/college/duke/nba-...-opportunities

Why are you wasting time here when you could be wasting it by listening to the latest episode of the DBR Podcast?

Thanks for passing along the news. This quote was a bit head-scratching based on what we saw at Duke, but glad to see it and hope it's true!

"Givony noted the 24-year-old [Jack White] "emerged as one of the most versatile defenders in the Australian NBL this season with Melbourne United.""

Still, I gotta imagine a very uphill battle for Jack to make the NBA, but awesome to see him get an opportunity to show what he's got.

The Los Angeles Lakers have released their Summer League roster. They had no draft picks, so they bought their way back in and selected #35 Max Christie. Squint really hard and maybe Shareef O'Neal and Scotty Pippen Jr. will look like their fathers. Also included are former UVA player Jay Huff (who played for the Lakers G League affiliate last year) and rookie Cole Swider, formerly of Syracuse. Like the Miami Heat, they play this weekend in San Francisco and proceed to Las Vegas.

    lakers2022.jpg

The San Antonio Spurs also have a roster, and we have a Javin DeLaurier sighting. Also playing are draft picks Jeremy Sochan, Malaki Branham, and Notre Dame's Blake Wesley. Aside from DeLaurier and Wesley, the squad includes ACC players Ky Bowman (BC) and Anthony Polite (FSU). I don't know what Justin Robinson is up to, but I know he's not here. The Spurs debut next week in Las Vegas.

These aren't rosters, but the Golden State Warriors and Washington Wizards each have a longer list of minicamp participants that presumably get whittled down to Summer League rosters. Vernon Carey Jr is among the 19 names on the Wizards list.

The Wizards minicamp started Monday (pictures) and continued today (more pictures, portrait video). The focus is on lottery pick Johnny Davis, but you can see some of Carey.

Vernon Carey is under contract with the Wizards for this year (2022-23), and the Wizards have a team option for next year (2023-24). He only appeared in 7 games last year (4 for the Hornets, and 3 for the Wizards), so he certainly can use the mini-camp (and summer league?) to play his way into more games/minutes. I'm hoping for it, as we don't get Blue Devils on the Wizards (here in DC area) all that often! Brief Austin Rivers and Jabari Parker stints in the last few years were the first since late-career Laettner in 2000 to 2004.

Carey is in the not-ideal "3rd-year player heading to Summer League" situation. Usually, the relevant players "graduate" from Summer League after their second year at the latest. Occasionally somebody makes it after a third summer, but the odds are against it. As one might expect for a player who has less than 200 career NBA minutes over two seasons.

The Orlando Magic have released their Summer League roster, headlined by #1 overall pick Paolo Banchero and #32 pick Caleb Houstan, plus two other ACC players, Devon Daniels (NCSU) and Jared Wilson-Frame (Pitt). Remember that Orlando plays in the first game in Las Vegas on Thursday, July 7, against the Houston Rockets.

Should we thank the summer interns in their PR department for making a roster announcement video in the style of TV opening credits? Stranger things have happened.

The Sacramento Kings, fresh off a wildly successful NBA draft where they used the #4 overall pick to grab the fourth best power forward, have released a California Classic roster for their games in San Francisco this weekend. (Maybe this means they'll make changes before they go to Las Vegas?) In addition to Keegan Murray, the roster includes DJ Steward, who played for the G League affiliate in Stockton, and Creighton rookie Alex O'Connell, who is considered Duke adjacent, despite playing 3 years at Duke.

    kings2022.jpg

The Golden State Warriors have expanded their 16 minicampers to a 19-name roster for the California Classic that they host this weekend. No ACC players, but the roster includes their recent draft picks (Patrick Baldwin Jr, Ryan Rollins, and Gui Santos) and their lottery picks from the previous two drafts (James Wiseman, Jonathan Kuminga, Moses Moody).

CBS Sports: Scotty Pippen Jr. says his dad would fake injuries when they played 1-on-1 during COVID lockdown

During Tuesday's media availably [sic] after the first official practice, Pippen Jr. was asked about his famous dad and whether or not they play together. Apparently, six-time NBA champion Scottie Pippen can no longer keep up with his son.

"My dad stopped playing me," Pippen Jr. said. "I was wearing him out. I used to beat him, and he would fake injuries and stuff. He wouldn't give me the credit, so we stopped playing a while ago."
Take notes, Bennedict Mathurin and, I guess, Paolo Banchero. If you're going to say something to offend an NBA legend, make sure he's already retired.

    About that...

    Kendra Andrews @kendra__andrews

Golden State’s No. 44 draft pick Ryan Rollins has suffered a stress fracture in his right foot, the Warriors announced. He will not participate in any Summer League games and will be reevaluated after Las Vegas.

    2:10 PM · Jun 29, 2022

James Wiseman is doing full on-court work and practice, but will not participate in the California Classic. It’s the goal for him to play in Las Vegas, the Warriors say.

    2:12 PM · Jun 29, 2022

Warriors No. 28 pick Patrick Baldwin Jr. is doing some on-court work and practicing, but won’t play in the California Classic games. TBD if he will play in Las Vegas.

    2:16 PM · Jun 29, 2022

Moses Moody will play this weekend at the California Classic in San Francisco. Jonathan Kuminga is still in the Congo and will meet the team in as Vegas.

Lots of roster announcements today, but let's start with some bad news from the Twin Cities ABC affiliate:

    Darren Wolfson @DWolfsonKSTP

Feel horrible for former Champlin Park, Marquette, and Duke big Theo John. He needs another 3ish weeks to recover fully from a lower body injury (back of his knee) that happened in one of his team pre-draft workouts. So he won't be playing in Vegas for the #Timberwolves.

    5:00 PM · Jun 30, 2022

That explains the Theo John-sized hole in the just announced Minnesota Timberwolves roster for Las Vegas. It still includes draft picks Walker Kessler, Wendell Moore Jr, and Josh Minott, plus ACC-adjacent player Marial Shayok.

    wolves2022.jpg

The New York Knicks come to Vegas with their lone draft pick Trevor Keels, plus Aamir Simms (Clemson), M.J. Walker (FSU), and ACC adjacent Garrison Brooks.

    knicks2022.jpg

The Indiana Pacers released a Vegas roster that includes draft picks Bennedict Mathurin, Andrew Nembhard, and Kendall Brown. No ACC players, but the coach is Ronald Nored, former Butler player and noted Jay Bilas man-crush.

    pacers2022.jpg

    More rosters to follow.

Curiously, the Detroit Pistons do not want to wait until preseason to see a backcourt of Cade Cunningham and Jaden Ivey, because both are on the Summer League roster. Also curious is the large ACC contingent: the Boeheim brothers (Syracuse), Kameron McGusty and Charlie Moore (Miami), Braxton Key (UVA), and Balsa Koprivica (FSU).

Where's lottery pick Jalen Duren? Local reporter Rod Beard tweets "Jalen Duren will be added to the roster when that trade is made official." He adds "If Cade Cunningham or Saddiq Bey puts on a jersey, I'd be shocked."

    pistons2022.jpg

The Chicago Bulls have issued their First Dance card for Vegas, featuring lone draft pick Dalen Terry and former Louisville and current G League player Carlik Jones.

    bulls2022.jpg

The Dallas Mavericks will bring their lone draft pick Jaden Hardy back home to Las Vegas. Moses Wright (GT) and David Collins (Clemson) join him.

    mavericks2022.jpg

The Portland Trail Blazers have a Summer League roster that features draft picks Shaedon Sharpe and Jabari Walker, plus second-year player Luka Garza, who was recently waived by the Pistons. He'll get an opportunity for revenge soon: Portland plays Detroit in the opening night doubleheader in Las Vegas.

Eight new Summer League rosters today. I'll post four at a time.

Let's start with Mark Williams and the Charlotte Hornets. The roster also includes fellow draft pick Bryce McGowens, and it wouldn't be a Jordan/Kupchak production without a Brady Manek sighting. They are also still trying to make LiAngelo Ball happen.

    hornets2022.jpg

As mentioned upthread, the Denver Nuggets have Jack White returning stateside. Also on the roster are draft picks Christian Braun, Peyton Watson, and Ismael Kamagate, plus Jontay Porter, their version of LiAngelo Ball.

    nuggets2022.jpg

The games in Salt Lake City start Tuesday, and we know more about half its participants. The Philadelphia 76ers traded out of the draft, and have a roster with a lot of G League and NBA experience. No former ACC players that I recognize. Only two players are directly out of college.

    sixers2022.jpg

Also playing in Salt Lake City and Las Vegas: the Memphis Grizzlies. All four draft picks (Jake LaRavia, David Roddy, Kennedy Chandler, Vince Williams Jr) are listed, along with rookie Keve Aluma of Virginia Tech.
