Summer Lax News and Notes 2022

The 2022 season ended yesterday so, as the saying goes, 2023 starts today.

The coaching carousel is slowly creaking to life. The sad news for FODL (Friends of Duke Lacrosse) is that former Duke assistant Chris Gabrielli is out at Providence after ten seasons of mostly failing to get traction in the Big East. The hopeful news for FODL is that former Duke player and current Navy offensive coordinator Brad Ross is reportedly one of four finalists for the job.

The PLL starts up this weekend; IIRC, rosters need to be finalized by Thursday. There will be plenty of Blue Devil alumni on those rosters, but one who won’t be is Jordan Wolf, who has retired.

Four current Duke players will be going to Ireland in July as part of the USA U-21 team for the U-21 world championship. Best wishes to Kenny Brower, Jake Caputo, Jake Naso, and Brennan O’Neill.

Have a great summer, everyone. Stay cool and don’t forget to hydrate.

Mike Pressler has retired as head coach at Bryant after 16 seasons. He has a career record of 377-198 in 38 seasons at four different schools, including leading Duke to its first two final fours.

    Best wishes, Coach.

Thanks for the letting us know. Just checked - he is 62. I got to know him a little bit when he was at Duke - a really good man.

The selection process for the US team for next year’s men’s world championship starts this week. 67 players, including five Duke alums and two others who did a grad-transfer year at Duke, have been invited to a series of evaluation events. The first cut after this week’s events will reduce the pool to 46.

Good luck to J.T. Giles-Harris, Justin Guterding, Myles Jones, Pat Resch, Brad Smith, Michael Sowers, and Cade van Raaphorst.

    (1) Maryland offensive coordinator Bobby Benson is the new head coach at Providence.

    (2) Notre Dame scored two big wins in the transfer portal, getting Yale’s Brian Tevlin and Chris Fake as grad transfers.

    (3) Duke incoming freshman defender Madison Beale, who helped lead St. Paul’s to a MIAA title and number one national ranking, is the Baltimore Sun girls player of the year.

Happy to hear that about Madison. For those who have not seen Saint Paul School, it’s absolutely beautiful. Puts many small college campuses to shame.

Westfield D Trey Brown, son of former Duke and NYG QB Dave Brown, committed to Maryland. That one hurts.

Duke’s Dyson Williams is spending the summer playing for Brooklin in Major Series Lacrosse, the summer men’s senior indoor league in Ontario, and so far it’s going well. After three games, he’s tied for the league lead in goals with nine. Interestingly, he’s listed as a transition player, the box position most analogous to a two-way midfielder in field lacrosse, rather than as an attackman. Wonder whose idea that was …

Pool play is complete at the women’s world championship. To the surprise of hardly anyone, the United States went 4-0 in Pool A, defeating Canada, England, Australia, and Scotland. They are the top seed for the knockout round, and face 16-seed Hong Kong later today; a win would send them to the quarterfinals against either Japan or New Zealand (along with Israel, one of the surprises of pool play).

There was one mild surprise (Czech Republic over Germany) and one significant upset (Haudenosaunee over Scotland) in the round of 16 at the women’s world championship, but the top four seeds all advanced. Today’s quarterfinals are set: USA-Japan, Canada-Czech Republic, England-Israel, and Australia-Haudenosaunee.

Today’s consolation semis could be pretty entertaining: Japan-Haudenosaunee at 11 and Israel-Czech Republic at 2 (both Eastern, ESPN+).

USA takes its second straight women’s world championship with an 11-8 win over Canada. Maryland alum Taylor Cummings is named MVP.

England takes bronze with an 8-7, triple-OT win over Australia.

Japan thrashes Israel, 13-4, in the fifth-place game, so if the format remains the same next time around Japan should replace Scotland in the top group.

    Well done, USA.

Much as Pitt did this year, Clemson is making a big push to be competitive in the ACC in its inaugural season next year. The Tiggers have been especially active in the transfer portal, including Belle Martire who tore it up at the recent world championships playing for the Czech Republic.

    IL has the details.
