The SEC and Big 12 already have their own 'challenge". I'm not sure of the current status, but if that is still contracted I assume those 2 are out. I don't think the number of teams is a major factor - there have been teams left out in the current format. Anything over 10 teams is viable.
I'm not sure why we need any sort of inter-conference challenge...just schedule a game vs. a name opponent in place of it. The Big Ten challenge was interesting for a while, but I"m not sure it served much of a purpose as time went on...
Well, my point was that it does not hurt because who cares when the conferences are changing so often and have little identity.
If anything, I take more pride in NCAA results than cherry-picked match-ups between teams that may or may not be relatively equal within their conferences. Not to mention being early in the season and not at neutral sites (although I do prefer the home environments).
But yes, the ACC ain’t what it used to be
Yes. I do enjoy the games, but as far as a tally of which conference is better, it really depends largely on matchups. Although the ACC has performed more poorly that can be blamed on just matchups as of late.
I honestly started losing a sense of pride in conference around the VaTech/BC expansion era - not to denigrate those schools that joined, it just wasn't the ACC that I grew up recognizing and being excited about.
I'll still pull for ACC schools to do well in the NCAA tournament to enhance our profile as a conference, but other than that...
meh.
I get what you're saying, and you're not alone by any stretch. In fact, most here likely agree with you, I know I do.
That being said, thankfully the ACC has grown, because if we are still that same conference today that we were 30 years ago, we'd be third tier, and the Duke basketball program would look very, very different.

Swarbrick held a live online chat for Notre Dame's alumni association Wednesday, during which he addressed recent developments with the Big Ten and how they could impact the school's ability to remain a football independent.
