    2022 NCAA Tournament Map

We've done this in the past three years (in which tournaments were held). The more detailed explanation is in the 2018 thread, but the general principle is that each county in the country is assigned to the 68 NCAA tournament teams by geographic proximity (distance from home arena to geographic center of the county) and then the map consolidates as the games are played (winning team takes losing team's land). Some fun oddities between the shapes of large California counties and the close proximity of USC, UCLA, and Fullerton - USC is closest to the center of LA County and Nye County in SW Nevada, but not any of the California counties in between. Also, tonight's tourney kick-off game features schools with adjacent territories, which is one of just 3 first-round border wars (Auburn-Jacksonville State and Villanova-Delaware are the others). Here's what the starting map looks like.

Just be you. You is enough. - K, 4/5/10, 0:13.8 to play, 60-59 Duke.

You're all jealous hypocrites. - Titus on Laettner

You see those guys? Animals. They're animals. - SIU Coach Chris Lowery, on Duke

Carbon and Emery County in Utah as Wyoming-held is absolutely hilarious. And, for selfish reasons, I am hoping Utah's Washington and Iron Counties are Duke blue come the stroke of midnight on Friday/Saturday.
"Amazing what a minute can do."

Thanks for starting this thread. This is always great fun especially when it is later in the tournament and a time lapse version is shown.

I love this thing. Sad if Duke doesn't get very far but the map is fun.
Nothing incites bodily violence quicker than a Duke fan turning in your direction and saying 'scoreboard.'

In a fit of remarkably bad timing, the site I use to build the maps (MapChart - a delightful resource) is currently unavailable. So no updates here until the site comes back online.

Fullerton shouldn’t be on there at all. They don’t even matter in their home county, which belongs to USC (and to a lesser extent to UC Irvine). San Bernardino County is ugly blue Bruin country.

Here's the end of day 1. Enjoy the plumage in central Kentucky.

    That's not plumage. It's carnage.

Because I forgot that they acquired territory in the play-in. Will fix this morning.

Why are you wasting time here when you could be wasting it by listening to the latest episode of the DBR Podcast?

The map is now up to date, with all of yesterday's action and (sadly) the first of today's. Of note, seven schools went into the tournament with land in NY. The only one that successfully defended its land was St. Peter's.

Just be you. You is enough. - K, 4/5/10, 0:13.8 to play, 60-59 Duke.

Good to see that Duke has taken control of Las Vegas. For the second time this season.
