Today was the first time I didn’t get a single letter in my first guess. Ended up getting it in 5 but really thought it could be my first miss.

Three seem to be par here. Another one where I felt lucky to have gotten it in three but maybe there just aren’t many options based on the letters likely to be used in the first two steps.

Kotaku: Science Has Figured Out The Worst Starting Word In Wordle

To figure out the best starting word, they created a custom script that used frequency analysis on each letter of every possible word found in Wordle’s entire word list. Each word was also given a score based on the frequency of each individual letter and from all that data, an optimal starting word was found. That word, by the way, is: Later.

However, all this work also resulted in discovering that xylyl is the worst starting word. It’s pretty easy to see why, considering how few words are spelled similar to xylyl or even use some of its letters.

Now I wonder if I might have found KNOLL sooner by starting with XYLYL.

I got the final four letters in order on the 3rd try. Unfortunately that left me with 4 possibilities for the first letter. I guessed correctly on the 5th try after missing on the 4th. But it was conceivable for me to lose on this one by luck of the draw.

I've been going with the shotgun approach on my first two or three words. Get all the common letters out of the way and find my vowels, then try to unscramble from there. So far it's been working. When I have a few choices, go with the most commonly used word. Aside from Knoll, it's worked well and to be honest, I didn't know you have use a word twice at that point.

After three rounds I had the second and fifth ones right (largely dumb luck) and by POE knew the first, so I just had two spots to fill in, so I went through all the possibilities and eventually there was basically only one choice that made any sense.

I got a bit lucky this time out, as there were at least five possibilities remaining on try #3 (and probably several more I didn't think of). But I got lucky, and nailed it right off the bat.
