I agree…for my 4th guess, I had only two possibilities that could fit, and one wasn’t really a word. I still wasn’t sure I had the right solution—crossed my fingers and typed it in.

Same. Was ‘sure’ my 3rd guess would be correct. And I avoided your fourth guess by not knowing it was a word. Ignorance is bliss!

Finally! Someone else thinks about Wordle in golf terms.

For a while now I've decided that every Wordle puzzle has a par of 4 guesses, and that the purpose of playing is to stay below par over the long term. Yet another reason I think we should be sharing stats rather than individual game outcomes.

    wordlestats050822.jpg

The comparison works. Solving in 1 guess would be a hole in one or a double eagle. 2 guesses is an eagle, 3 guesses a birdie, 4 guesses is par, 5 guesses a bogey, 6 guesses a double bogey, more than 6 guesses a triple bogey.

The stats screenshot above tells me that I've had 42 solves under par and 25 over par. That's a -17 over 115 puzzles, which is analogous to a -10 or -11 in a 72-hole golf tournament.

In practice, the comparison gets even better. The closest early guesses get you to the green faster, and then it's a matter of putting. Take today's puzzle:

    ⬛⬛🟩⬛⬛
    🟩🟩🟩⬛⬛
    🟩🟩🟩⬛⬛
    🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩

If you remember my past posts, you already know my first and second guesses. If you don't remember...

    Spoiler!

Each is unlikely to be the right word, but they eliminate a lot of possibilities, and in this case I was left with only two. I go for the more common word -- a subjective decision -- and, when in doubt, the noun. My third guess was both, and it was wrong. Got it on the second putt.

I also think in terms of golf, and in general I agree with the "ubiquitous par 4" idea. But for someone who really wants to get anal about it, there are some words for which par could be thought of differently. For example, I think a word with multiple occurrences of a letter is maybe one more par than those otherwise consistent but with five unique letters. There are probably other examples, like words with a 'q' or 'z', words with a combination of say 4 letters that are common with other words (a frequent malady of those posting here), things like that. On the whole, though, I like the generic par 4 approach.

Through 5 tries, I have 4 of the 5 letters, ALL in the wrong positions. I’m going to have to write this one on paper to test the possible iterations and figure out the 5th letter. Be back later!

Just IM'd with CathyCA. My word wasn't her word today. I think my word was SCOTUS inspired. That's as far as I'll venture into public policy....
