Anyone try Nerdle? It's the math equivalent of Wordle. Tried it last night. Sort of confusing but interesting nonetheless.

PS, I did not read much of this thread so excuse me if Nerdle has already been covered. I do Wordle in the evening and sometimes just looking at this thread gives too many clues.

The fact that I got so extremely lucky the first time tells me I won't be good at this.

But I do appreciate the efforts of those trying to make Wordle knockoffs. Any trend that asks Internet users to turn on their brains for a change is a good thing.

I got even luckier on my first guess (mostly by eliminating a bunch of numbers). I suspect that a big part of the strategy is finding the correct mathematical operator. Once you get this, the possibilities become fairly limited (as you begin to confirm/exclude specific numbers).

Same. My excuse is I tried 538’s solution to maximizing the chance of getting the Wordle mystery word by the 3rd guess. Their method uses a specific starting word (which I won’t reveal). The results of the 1st guess is then used with a lookup table to find best second guess word. Using this method you should solve puzzle in 3 or fewer guesses 60% of the time.

IOW I cheated and it didn’t pay off.

(I wasn’t really cheating - I just wanted to try their technique to see if I could learn anything. The cost of this exploration is I now know the best initial guess for solving Wordle in 2 or 3 tries. I probably won’t stick to using it though.)

There were still 3 equally likely guesses left on my 5th try, so it was a pure guessing game at that point. I did use same digit twice in one of my guesses - that was suboptimal for digit eliminations.

Well, our privacy people finally caught up and blocked Wordle from our work computers. I can get on the archive and do yesterday's again!

Lots of words with letters 2, 3, and 5. Feel lucky to get it in five.

An interesting video (to me) from "3blue1brown" (a YT channel about animating math) applying formal information and entropy theory to Wordle. Based on this theory and a bit of math he explains how he derives optimal algorithms to solve Wordle under different assumptions and with different levels of background knowledge.

He creates four versions of his algorithms:
V1. Assume any of the 12,972 allowed words is equally likely to be the answer. Mean # of guesses to answer = 4.12

V2. Incorporate word use frequency data. In other words assume ‘alive’ is more likely to be the answer than ‘accas’. Mean = 3.60
V3. Incorporate the list of 2,315 possible answers. Mean = 3.43. In “hard mode" the mean goes up to 3.56.
V4. Same as 3, but allow it to remember and exclude words already used. Mean = 3.14.

More interesting than the specific findings are his clear explanations of information theory. Toward the end he applies it to prove that the theoretical limit on average tries to solve Wordle is a bit over 3. This is true even if you incorporate the known list of 2,315 possible answers.

I didn't incorporate the known list of possible answers, but this is a nice contrast to my result from yesterday:
