    Black History Month

I saw an interesting article this morning in the Thoroughbred Daily News about the time integration first occurred at Hialeah racetrack in Florida.

It involved a name that folks who read this thread are definitely familiar with, Cab Calloway. Calloway was friends with Chick Lang from up north. Lang was a horseman and jockey agent who was very closely associated with one of the great jockeys of the time, Bill Hartack. Hartack, being a guy who eventually won the KYD 5 times, including Northern Dancer and Majestic Prince, was box office! Anyway, in 1958 when Calloway was in Florida he couldn't get his normal seats and asked if Lang could help him out (Calloway always gave Lang a call when he was in Florida); Lang was more than glad to help him out and gave him his clubhouse pin to get in the Hialeah Turf Club. Lang called Calloway up later to find out how things went only to find that the Hialeah turf club snubbed Calloway and told him that it was "Whites Only!" Lang called up the maitre 'D and gave him an ear full; Calloway had no trouble getting a table in the Hialeah Turf Club after that. The color line was broken.

Chick Lang is mentioned now and then. He is generally regarded as having elevated the Preakness into the premier race in Maryland that it is.

Horses can come from anywhere to win the Kentucky Derby.

Mine That Bird reminds us of that.

They ran the Mine That Bird Derby yesterday at Sunland Park:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
It was won by Straight Up G, the favorite. He won on the front end.
Jim Rome is a part owner.

    No KYD Points though.

Thanks for the history lesson. My law school classmate who introduced me to horse racing was a HUGE fan of Bill Hartack. I’m not sure if I ever saw Hartack in person. Back in the early 70’s the jockeys didn’t travel around much except for a race like the Ky. Derby. Today just look for a million dollar race and you will see Jocks come in from all over the country. They even travel from time to time to minor tracks like the place in Iowa. I think it’s great for the local horse players to get to see the best of the best ride in person. Which brings up a question. I rarely bet a horse because of the jockey, but I sometimes don’t bet a particular horse because the jock is not very good or in a terrible slump. What say you DevilHorse?

There are a few jockeys that will always give a horse a chance. Irad Ortiz, Flavian Prat, Jorge Velasquez will always move a horse up if they had a pedestrian jockey on them. It's happened dozens of times; these guys are wizards. Their sense of pace and touch are impressive. There's a reason you don't see them on long shots often; it's because any horse they are on is NOT a long shot.

At my first Belmont, Willie Shoemaker traveled to NYC to ride Avatar. He didn't show up to come home empty handed.

The big stables favor the top jockeys because it enhances their chances of getting their big price purchases/owners to get their money back and their faces in the winner's circle. The jockeys hook up with the big owners to guarantee the big horses in the big races. Of course there are some codes of loyalty on a horse that you can make a commitment to, and the trainers understand that; conflicts always arise in your favor and against you. Looking out for the rising stars, and talented newcomers, with the 7 and 5 lb bug (weight allowance) is also part of handicapping. When I was getting started, Steve Cauthen was an outrageous jockey, winning half the races in NY with a 7 then 5lb advantage; just betting him, without regards to the horse he was on, was a progression betting mechanism with positive ROI. I had a great day thanks to that. Won a Daily Double and a couple of Exactas. Low hanging fruit when you catch on.

You want KYD Points? I'll give you KYD Points!
Blue Trail picked up 20 KYD Points winning at Kempton Park yesterday:
    https://www.kentuckyderby.com/horses...ler-at-kempton
Initially I thought, "Oh Australia", well maybe the UK. So I looked it up.. no South Africa.
Blue Trail is owned by Godolphin, is not nominated to the Triple Crown, and is sired by a turf sire.
Not likely to be visiting our shores for the KYD. All those points and can't sell them to BB.

On to the business at hand.
The KYD Trail heats up this weekend with 3 (well, maybe 4) KYD relevant races:

In rapid fire, the schedule calls for:

The Gotham at Aqueduct at 5:27
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
    [ URL above, Saturday March 3, 2022, Aqueduct - Race 10, PPs ]
Lots of good horses to choose from: Morello, Rockefeller, Glider, Dean's List and Bold Journey look like the contenders. Runninsonofagun has a great name, but can't keep a trainer! What's with that? This will be his 4th start and 3rd trainer; must be some interesting back story, but this horse keeps improving. The horse better fly or the trainer will need a good explanation. But to be a horse trainer you need to have about 100 explanation on hand (I saw an article about this once, very funny, but I digress...). I will bet on Dean's List and Morello, with Runninsonofagunfinishing first but disqualified because he is overweight with the trainer on his back.

The San Felipe at Santa Anita at 5:30:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...99/summary.htm
    [ URL above, Saturday March 5, 2022, Santa Anita - Race 6, PPs ]
Forbidden Kingdom over Doppelganger in this one.

The Fountain of Youth at Gulfstream Park at 5:42:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
    [ URL above, Saturday March 5, 2022, Gulfstream Park - Race 12, PPs ]
Mo Donegal is scratched with a fever and would have been a favorite.
Simplification put himself in an impossible situation at the start of his last race; if that doesn't repeat, he has a good chance to win with a decent pay-off. Emmanuel left New York to come here and test these tigers; he is undefeated and could be very good.
Rattle N Roll, In Due Time, and Howling Time each have an argument to improve and be factors.

There is also a 3YO race, but no KYD points. The 'disappointing' Battaglia Stakes:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
    [ URL above, Saturday March 5, 2022, Turfway Park - Race 5, PPs ]
Stolen Base and Erase are the likely horses. Tiz The Bomb is likely to be scratched. I hear he is headed to England to be prepped for the Epsom Derby since he likes the weeds.

There are other interesting races on these pages; feel free to explore.

Big day of races today. The KYD Points races will be on CNBC from 4-6. When is a guy supposed to eat dinner?

On Sunday, there is a nice race at Santa Anita for the 3YO Fillies. The Santa Ysabel:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...99/summary.htm
    [ URL above, March 6, 2022, Santa Anita - Race 8, PPs ]
Under The Stars, Eda, and Cairo Memories will be your favorites. Under The Stars and Eda of course will not be accruing KY Oaks points.
Cairo Memories gets an improvement in jockey with Mike Smith taking the raines.

Yesterday was a tremendous day of Thoroughbred racing. Lots of interesting races, lots of old names in the undercards, but I'll keep the focus on the 3YOs:

In the Gotham at Aqueduct, it was Morello with a 96 Beyer:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1500238728433860611
The colt by Classic Empire stalked the pace and won easily. Classic Emire is a son of Pioneerof The Nile (same sire as American Pharoah) was a 2YO champion and seems to have thrown some good ones who are maturing nicely at 3.
This Beyer was 4 points better than the filly analog won by Venti Valentine who ran impressively at her 3YO debut with a 92 Beyer.

In the Fountain of Youth Stakes, Simplification won in an accident marred race, and received a 96 Beyer:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
Here is a video of (most of) the race, with a spanish race call, but the accident clip removed.
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1500250612516147202
I provide it because the #2 Simplification's move from the backstretch (in traffic), to the far outside (widest of all) to the front, should be appreciated.

Most replays cut out the accident, but I found a copy of the clip if you want to see it. No horses or jockeys were injured:
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1500245512083156998
The filly division, the Davona Dale, was won by Kathleen O, who received an 85 Beyer:
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1500471349122408457
BTW, Davona Dale was a super racehorse!!

Now, the most impressive 3YO of the day was in the San Felipe, won by Forbidden Kingdom, for which he was awarded a 98 Beyer:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1500244958128885774
Forbidden Kingdom did it the hard way; he went to the front and didn't look back. And he did it in a good time and was never challenged. I was waiting for him to get leg weary, but it didn't happen. In his last race he was head to head in the stretch and lasted. It was not nearly that close. This horse is getting stronger. And NO, he is not a Baffert horse; he eats Baffert horses. He is a myRaceHorse horse, which means he has a ton of owners too. kudos to the many. It will be a fun story as this goes forward.

The filly analog of the San Felipe, the Santa Ysabel, runs today.

Don't feel too badly for Baffert, he unveiled another monster named Taiba yesterday:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
Taiba received a 103 Beyer on what must have been a tiring track, which makes Forbidden Kingdom's race more impressive.
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1500384527486750721
This Gun Runner 3YOC cost $1.7M and won in his first lifetime start.

In the Battaglia, in a surprise (to me) Tiz The Bomb appeared and won:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1500281771476361216
The win was by a vanishing neck over Stolen Base; however he still gets the 10 KYD Points!
Note that the surface at Turfway Park is synthetic and tends to play more like turf, which is Tiz The Bomb's specialty.
I have no Beyer but the time seems a bit slow.

Due to basketball I didn’t watch any of the races. Thanks for the twitter links so I watched today. Forbidden Kingdom looked good. I always worry about a front runner winning the Ky Derby, but it happens fairly often. The problem is you never know which horse will go 1 1/4 miles and which will quit a the top of the stretch. So far the three year olds at Fairgrounds and Oaklawn have not been that impressive. I’m sure the myracehorse owners were out in full force at Santa Anita. Also have noticed they bet a lot of early money and drive down the odds at least initially. They have already had one Derby winner, can they do it again?

The race at Gulfstream was scary. Glad that neither riders or horses were injured. The falls made that race hard to quantify. I assume most will be back for the Florida Derby.

Only two months to go until the Ky. Derby.

The races took place before the Duke game, and I recorded them. I was set.
My guess is that the myRaceHorse owners are spread all over the country, so there is a subset at most tracks, and probably only a few are traveling cross-country, unless of course it is the KYD.
You are quite right that we don't know if these horses can go 1 1/4. But Forbidden Kingdom will not have his own way on the lead, at this speed, in the KYD. Only a Seattle Slew type can do that. He has a ways to go to be in that class.

My view on the Fountain of Youth is that Simplification was the winner no matter what. He circled the horses that fell about 6 wide on the turn and was (obviously) past them at the time of the incident and was not stressed to win. Even if those fallen horses had resources, they were still boxed as Simplification had clear sailing at the top of the stretch; they were not going to make progress on him for at least half the stretch.

On the eve of the ACC Tournament, where every team has hope, I found an interesting race at PARX for a bunch of also ran hopefuls:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...1/summary.html
    [ URL above, March 8, 2022, Parx Racing - Race 10, PPs ]

In the City Of Brotherly Love Stakes (Parx is on the North side of Philadelphia), we have an interesting mix not quite ready for prime time 3YOs and KYD trail prep drop outs. There is even a (poor) animal that just raced in the Gotham to Morello 3 days ago in the field (will he show?). Somebody has to win this race and will be encouraged to try the KYD trail again; it will be a windy day in the 40s.

Courvoisier is the highest class horse in the bunch, having won 10 KYD points winning the Jerome Handicap. Noneedtoworry ran Saturday, and seems the fastest, but has he recovered? Courvoisier and Smarten Up have not seen a dry track in months; Smarten Up was a fast closing 2nd in the Jerome. How will the wind play into this? We'll see. There is early speed provided by other horses. Class usually beats speed. I wouldn't bet a lot on this race, but looks like Courvoisier/Smarten Up Quinella (do you guys know Quinella? Jai Alai? = Exacta Box). Unless someone dominates, I wouldn't move him forward.

    What a race.

All but 3 horses scratched out, but my Exacta Box was still alive (but not worth betting). However, my two picks finished last and next to last.
The speed controlled the race and turned this into a short sprint for home. Courvoisier couldn't keep up. Relative longshot Twisted Ride held off Smarten Up in a spirited stretch drive.

Twisted Ride is trained by Kathleen Demasi who is based at PARX. I have visited her stable and talked to her at Monmouth when we have both been there. She mainly trains Turf sprinters but does (obviously) do well on the dirt as well. She hooked up with the young Kendrick Carmouche when he got started at Parx. And she runs the Pewter Stable partnerships. You'll see her horses competing in minor stakes from Florida to Saratoga in season.

Sad to report that KYD winner Go For Gin passed away this week. Won the 1994 KYD for Nick Zito (where has he been?).
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Go_for_Gin
He then lost the Preakness to Tabasco Cat. You'll remember that it was Tabasco Cat who injured the son of D. Wayne Lukas, Jeff, when he acted up one day.

Albert the Great is perhaps Go For Gin's best offspring.,

Hard to believe that the top 2YOs of 2021 have not even registered an official workout yet. What does that say about the toll that 2YO racing takes on these horses?
Echo Zulu, Jack Christopher, and Corniche are all in training, but just aren't ready.
Not that we don't enjoy, or look forward to the 2YOs, but physiologically, their knees are not yet matured; although the money is good, and it is expensive to keep a thoroughbred on the farm or in training till they are 3YOs, most trainers would prefer to wait to race till they are 3YOs. They last longer. Just sayin'.

    So who is ready?

This weekend we have only one big race, the Tampa Bay Derby:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
[ URL above, Saturday March 12, 2022, Tampa Bay Downs - Race 11, PPs ]
The obvious favorite is the top horse on most people's KYD list, Classic Causeway, who won his last race in impressive fashion. But it is his only win other than his maiden win. Other more impressive horses (by reputation) are not ready, or have trainer problems. Classic Causeway will be overbet.
You might find value in Major General; the Pletcher trainee has won both of his starts, by only a neck. But this is his first time out this year. He won the Iroquois (KY version) last year. Giant Game scratched out of the Fountain Of Youth last week to be here; this is an easier spot. He needed the Holy Bull start. Shipsational made a big move on Classic Causeway in their last race, but he was too far back to reach the top; a better early trip would make him relevant; he has Manny Franco on Saturday. Belgrade is undefeated, but not fast enough. Money Supply has only won a maiden.

Also on the card is the first start of last year's Fountain of Youth and Holy Bull winner. But he hasn't run since failing in the Florida Derby.

I'm talking about Greatest Honour. Greatest Honour has the back class, but is he ready. There are some fit horses in this race. There are several horses with winning streaks here.

Tracking a nice colt who is making his second start after a great win in his maiden race:

We The People is by Constitution and won by 5 last out. He may not be the favorite, but if he improves in this Optional Claimer, he'll be right there.

Free money opportunity on the Tampa Bay Derby card:

Pletcher has a 3YO making his first start, Commandperformance in the 5th race:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
[ URL above, Saturday March 12, 2022, Tampa Bay Downs - Race 5, PPs ]
This is a maiden race, but this horse has 3 starts under his belt, all with speed figures over 90 (one other horse has an 81 and that's it). He has 6 KYD points by virtue of his finishes in the Champagne and BC Juvenile as a 2YO. He finished just behind Giant Game, who is in the Tampa Bay Derby on Saturday. He has the benefit of being a first time Lasix and Blinkers On. But they are expecting an off track tomorrow; not to worry, this horse likes the mud!!! So, unless this horse was hurt badly, he is in good hands with .. Irad! He is 3/5 in the Morning Line.

Paco Lopez has been given 14 days for his ride on In Due Time in last week's Fountain Of Youth Stakes. Essentially Lopez is being blames for nudging a horse into another's path, causing the 2 horse accident in last week's race. Lopez was given previous penalties for haphazard race riding in this meet.

Noticed another race of interest today, the Azeri:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
    [ URL above, March 12, 2022, Oaklawn Park - Race 9, PPs]
This race features the seasonal debut of Shedaresthedevil and champion CeCe.
CeCe is a bit more of a sprint specialist; she didn't fair too well going over a mile the last time, but she has a start under her belt.
Shedaresthedevil adds Lasix for the first time in a year and has been freshened. Should be a good race.

Interesting thought that last year's dethroned KYD winner, Medina Spirit, is a grandson of Giants Causeway. The horse atop the KYD ratings, and the favorite for today's Tampa Bay Derby, Classic Causeway is also by Giants Causeway. Pretty good. That Storm Cat line is pretty good (Justify's line as well). Maybe it's just Northern Dancer, Storm Cat's grandsire..

Looks like CeCe was ready to roll and received a 92 Beyer:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1502786739533799427
CeCe stalked the pace and came on at the end. Shedaresthedevil looks like she needed the race; after she was passed, she came on again but didn't have the bottom and finished 3rd by less than 2 lengths. Pauline's Pearl looks like she will be a player this year.

    Commandperformance was unimpressive:

But, if you recall the old adage that I invoke when betting, "Not a man alive pays the bills at 1 to 5!" you wouldn't bet to win on Commandperformance. But if you bet to Place or Show, you would have gotten the same return on a 1/9 shot. That's why bridge jumpers bet the Show pool, not the Win pool. Fenwick looked good. Commandperformance struggled to get up for Place.

In the Tampa Bay Derby, Classic Causeway did not disappoint:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1502777154861473803
The track was a bit dull, and the winner was awarded (only) an 84 Beyer. But he seemed to easily take care of business over a more than decent field.

In the 8th at Tampa Bay Downs, Greatest Honour will still need more work as finishes next to last:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on

At Oaklawn Park, We The People looked AWESOME and is probably headed for the KYD Trail (Arkansas Derby) where he will need some KYD Points!
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1502747559080562691
The 89 Beyer was the highest for a 3YO on Saturday.
I love how they are naming the progeny of Constitution. Constitution seems to sire a lot of (good) chestnuts, but he's a bay.. just filing that away.

We The People looked like he was trying to pull the jockey out of the saddle the first half of the race. Always interesting as to how tight a hold the jockey should keep on a horse that wants to run. If he wins the Arkansas Derby, he will deserve a look in the Ky Derby.
