The race marks the reappearance of Life Is Good. Who knows what happened to him in Dubai, but he is one of the top talents of the past few years on the race track scene. He is up against Speaker's Corner, who was last seen being flattened by Flightline in the Met Mile. This race is at 7f.
Glad to see a race named after John Nerud; he being the trainer of, amongst others, SheDr. Fager.
Speaker's Corner might be worth the price over a Life Is Good who might need the race.

First off, Mo Donegal (Belmont winner) has a bone bruise from the Belmont that will keep him out of training for 2 months. Just announced but it has taken a while for this to come out apparently or to be diagnosed.

    On to the races.

Life is Good was better than good as he demolished the field in the Nerud:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1543303447000252424
The hand ride was awarded the day high 112 Beyer. Speaker's Corner attempted to keep up with the insane fractions, but Life Is Good is just a freak.
Folks are now looking forward to the Flightline/Life Is Good showdown in the Breeder's Cup. But I think that these horses are best at different distances and it might not be 1 1/4 miles for either of them.

Drain The Clock looked drained. Willy Boi won the Smile Sprint Invitational:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1543323425606877189

Shedaresthedevil looked strong winning the Fleur de Lis and was awarded a 97 Beyer:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1543336778249015296
    Pauline's Pearl faded to 3rd.

Olympiad beat Americanrevolution in the Stephen Foster and was awarded a 111 Beyer:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1543352218186924033
Olympiad has been tremendous this year and continues to dominate his races. Seeing him take on the top horses, perhaps in the Whitney, should be next.
Americanrevolution ran a great race too.

Charge It ran a Secretariat-esqe stretch (23 length win) in the Dwyer to beat a suspect set of foes and was awarded 111 Beyer:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1543335299538886662
Charge It has certainly earned a shot at the top horses in the division again.

Aloha West was life and death winning the Kelly's Landing yesterday, and was awarded a 99 Beyer.
This is AW's first win since his Breeder's Cup Mile win over Jackie's Warrior.

A notable 2YO colt debut occurred yesterday. In the 3rd Race for 2YO maidens yesterday, everyone was watching the Bolt D'oro colt, but it was the Girvin firster who stole the show. Damon's Mound took over the race and kept on going and was awarded an 84 Beyer and some buzz.

Perhaps if it is more like a TBred speed?

TBreds have been around for about 300 years (that's around the time of the Godolphin Arabian). The Standardbreds have been around for a much shorter time, maybe 130-150 years, but they are a mix of TBreds, Morgans, saddlebreds, and sally the mare from the other end of the county. But where the TBreds have not been evolving in speed, the Standardbreds continue to get faster at a measureable rate.

When I was younger the fastest mile was 1:52.0, set by Steady Star in 1971. But a wonderful horse named Niatross blew that mark out of the water and broke the 1:50 barrier with a 1:49.1 race at The Red Mile. That mark continued to be lowered and is 1:46.1 now. These Standardbreds are pacers, not trotters who are about 3 seconds slower. In these races, the quarters are almost always 26.x and any standardbred that touches a 25.4 or 25.3 in a race is a wonderhorse; that is moving for a standardbred!!

Individual quarters are usually faster at the beginning or end of the mile, but the fastest quarters seem to be at the beginning by horses that don't survive to win the mile.

TBreds tend to run a mile race in a 1:34.x rate for good horses and 1:32.x for the top horses, so they are much faster as you might expect, and the quarter mile rates are about 24.x seconds in these races.

So, last night was the Graduate Series for the top pacers in North America, and one division was won by a wonderful 4YO named Bulldog Hanover in 1:47.0, only 4 ticks off of the world record, but that's not too surprising for this improving colt. The wow factor was the last quarter in 24.4 ! That is TBred speed dragging a race bike, with straps (hobbles) on his legs. When I saw the splits I had to do the math several times. That was a Wow.

Standardbreds are not going to be challenging the TBreds anytime soon at a mile, but that was quite the effort, and he seemed to do it easily and won by 2 lengths.

I just wanted to point out, for the record, that Bulldog Hanover continues to improve.
Last night, in a minor stakes race, Bulldog Hanover tied the fastest all time mile record for a Standardbred in 1:46.0.
    https://twitter.com/i/status/
His last quarter was only 25 3/5 this week, but he wasn't exactly pushed.

Watch #1 make the 6 wide sweep on the far turn.

This son of Mineshaft was made the second choice in the 2021 Risen Star, where he finished 5th. I thought he was going to be a good one, in the fashion of Rombauer. In that race he sustained a minor ligament injury.

Fast forward a year (4 months ago) and the Senor got an infected hock due to a stall injury; so more R&R. Now finally as a 4YO he is ready to have his 4th start in a minor Allowance race at Lone Star Park this coming Sunday July 3rd:

Senor Buscador out-classes every horse in this field, but is he healthy? He fits this allowance class of course. They just want to test the leg to see if they can move on to better things. He is back on Lasix.

Best of luck to this hard luck colt and his connections.

Very happy to see that Senor Buscador had a triumphant return to the races:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
I would have put 2 ducats on him if only I had an outlet that took Lone Star Park. The only question was whether this fellow was healthy.
Senor Buscador (SB) got off to a sluggish start, but he progressed forwardly along the backside, went 4 wide on the turn, and took the lead in the stretch to win by 2 comfortably. Hoping to see this guy against some better competition in the future.

A few races for the 7/9/2022 weekend:

The 4th race at Belmont is the Suburban Handicap:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
    [ URL above, Saturday July 9, 2022 - Belmont Park - Race 4, PPs ]
Dynamic One has the figures. Max Player has back class but has been lost. Only 5 runners so any horse having a good day will get big money.

Some big money Turf races at Belmont too:

    The Belmont Oaks for fillies:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
    [ URL above, Saturday July 9, 2022 - Belmont Park - Race 7, PPs ]
McKulick appears to be the favorite and Cairo Memories (with Mike Smith) has been good recently. But there are a lot of Euros visiting for the big money.

The $1M Belmont Derby is interesting:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
    [ URL above, Saturday July 9, 2022 - Belmont Park - Race 9, PPs ]
Tiz The Bomb looks to establish his Turf cred after a so so attempt at the Triple Crown. Classic Causeway tries the turf for the first time after a 3rd in the Ohio Derby; he HAS a turf pedigree being out of Giants Causeway. Emmanual from the Blue Grass Stakes demands respect. And of course, more euros.

If you're interested in the Iowa Oaks and Iowa Derby [Rattle N Roll], look at the first link for Pletcher. I didn't see anything that excited me there.

The Los Alamitos Derby is on Saturday:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...99/summary.htm
    [ URL above, Saturday July 9, 2022 - Los Alamitos - Race 9, PPs ]
Slow Down Andy should win this; he also won here the Los Alamitos Futurity when he beat Messier. Or maybe that isn't saying much. Horses for courses? He hasn't run much so if he's ready..?!

At Prairie Meadows, the Cornhusker Handicap:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...5/summary.html
    [ URL above, Saturday July 9, 2022 - Prairie Meadows - Race 9, PPs ]
Warrant, Silver Prospector, and Rated R Superstar. These horses are anything but consistent, which will get you a price if you have a favorite.
Warrant has the highest average speed, but loses Prat. Silver Prospector wins once every 2 years but is the only one of the big 3 that keeps his jockey. Rated R Superstar will need his best effort.

Discussion is happening for the entrants for the Haskell (7/23) and the Jim Dandy (7/30) both can be considered prep races for the Travers. It used to be that the Haskell and the Travers were either/or, but this makes things interesting. It sounds like minds are not made up for the Preakness winner Early Voting to go to the Haskell or the JD. If Classic Causeway goes this weekend on the turf, I don't think he's running in the Haskell. The big gun in the Haskell is Jack Christopher; undefeated, but has never gone the distance of 1 1/8 miles. It sure hasn't looked like it would be a problem. Home Brew won the Pegasus at Monmouth and looked really good doing it. Zandon looks like he's going to Saratoga directly. Mr. Baffert has Pinehurst, who won the Saudi Derby, looks to be coming to NJ for this race (maybe he likes the sand at the Jersey Shore?). Mr. B also has a horse named Taiba, who was all the rage winning the Santa Anita Derby and had a good view of the top horses in the KYD. Cyberknife and Howling Time, the head-bobbing duo from that exciting Matt Winn stakes look to be headed here. There are a few other lesser knowns, but they have little chance of getting a call in the stretch at Monmouth. Things will solidify in a week.

    Forgot These Two

Noticed these two races on Saturday:

At Horseshoe Indianapolis, the Indiana Oaks:

    [ URL above, Saturday July 9, 2022, Horsehoe Indianapolis - Race 11, PPs ]

Also at the HI is the Indiana Derby:

    [ URL above, Saturday July 9, 2022, Horsehoe Indianapolis - Race 12, PPs ]
Rattle N Roll looks like the class here, but only because he's been racing, and has progressed with the best figures. But just a minute! Un Ojo deserves a look (sorry). Un Ojo was doing well when he won the Rebel against good company but checked in the Arkansas Derby and lost his chance. Then we lose sight of him for 3 months (sorry again). He reappears (ah) with a new trainer, and now tries Lasix for the first time. If he's in shape, he could be trouble.
You have a couple of undefeated, and lightly raced horses here in Best Actor and New York Fever, and a couple of horses that have just broken their maiden. Could be a good betting race.

Saratoga and Del Mar will be opening very soon, so the big price yearlings will be making their debuts and 2YO stakes will be starting in earnest. So get ready to fill out your fantasy stables for next year's KYD because... Oh right, half the KYD23 starters probably don't start till Jan/Feb 2023. Never Mind.

BTW, if Saratoga is open, can NFL camps and college football be far behind?

Now that that's out of the way..

The Suburban Handicap was won by Dynamic One who was awarded the high Beyer of the day, 98:

CC controlled the race, even though he was challenged for half the backstretch, and outsprinted challengers to the wire. The race course must have been fast to 'only' have been awarded an 89 Beyer with a sub-2:00 1 1/4 mile race. Certainly better than his KYD. He may not see dirt again. Tiz The Bomb bombed; he did not move forward in the stretch.

Slow Down Andy 'flinched' in the stretch; they say 'lugged in', or shyed away from High Connection. He raced greenly for sure. But it was not obvious he was going to compete.

    Officiating won the Cornhusker Handicap:

    Small Notes

    I noticed that:

Remember the 31 Trainers that were indicted for using drugs on their horses on the East Coast a year or so ago, including the trainer of Maximum Security? The doctor who supplied the drugs, Dr. Seth Fishman received an 11 year sentence yesterday in Federal prison; he will get to become acquainted with maximum security soon.

I noticed that Newgrange was sold at auction yesterday for $325K (there are horse auctions that go on every other week). The owner said that he was selling some of his lightly raced 3YOs to amass yearling capital for the big sales coming up in the next several months. Saratoga's yearling sale are huge for big prices; $325k won't get you much, but Newgrange was probably a profit.

Saratoga opening on Thursday; the first day will be the Schuylerville
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...5/summary.html
    [ URL above, Thursday July 14, 2022, Saratoga - Race 9, PPs]
Me And My Shadow and Adora look to be the favorites; both are from the Mark Casse barn.
Schuylerville is a town in upstate New York, not too far from Saratoga. The town is named for Philip Schuyler who was a general in the Revolutionary War and became a Senator for New York State.
Saratoga's Battlefield (National Historic State Park) is only 10 miles from the Race Track in Stillwater New York. Stillwater is so small that the kids there go to High School in nearby Mechanicsville.

I leave on this general note that I found on the internet about one of the people you find on the backstretch:
    TheProblem1.jpg
There are a lot of people like this that you meet if you hang out on the backstretch. At every barn you usually have one groom for every 2 horses, possibly an assistant trainer per 10 horses if you have a large stable, and an extra hand or two at a farm. That's a lot of people. Most are very kind, and some have interesting talent.
I knew a guy at the farm where my trainer was, he was an assistant trainer for a big outfit. His name was Pete and he was very friendly and had a wry sense of humor. He could also draw. He would draw scenes depicting the various characters and acts of gossip from around the backstretch. He wasn't PEB, but he was pretty good. Another groom used to create halters, with their race bit, that had their name woven with lanyards. Hmmm, maybe there's a coffee table book there.

    Friday at the Spa

This Friday I spotted a familiar name in a race; Art Collector is entered in the Forbidden Apple, a turf race, as a MTO (Main Track Only) entry. So he's not trying the turf, but hoping for a deluge to knock the race onto the dirt.
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
    [ URL above, July 14, 2022 - Saratoga - Race 9, PPs ]
Mira Mission recently finished 2nd in a Grade I, while Public Sector appears as if he really liked the Saratoga turf course a year ago.

Allow me to point out some evolution in racing payouts. Kentucky will soon be providing penny breakage in their payouts. That means that rather than pocketing the fraction of the $0.20 that you usually have between levels of payouts for W/P/S, the bettor now gets the full benefit of their effort. With computers, the calculation is interesting. We'll see in practice if the cashiers go nuts and can handle all of the pennies that people will have to lug around (if they win that is); cashiers will rely on their machines to calculate payouts. I thought there was a copper shortage. Will other tracks follow suit? (I doubt it).

Today Saratoga opens, and I read about how wonderful the Schulerville is for the winner to become a great producing broodmare. I'll spare you the names and statistics, but the value of the winner will see a big improvement and will be worthy of a follow for years.

It was sad to hear that the great turf sire Kitten's Joy passed away. He was twice the leading North American sire and 5 times the leading turf sire. Condolences to the Ramsey's who lost this great stallion. Kitten's Joy was 21 years old.

In the Forbidden Apple, City Man won:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
He is the son of Mucho Macho Man.

Word is that Taiba is coming to the Haskell at Monmouth.

One of the 'buzz' 2YOs, mentioned earlier in this forum, Damon's Mound, is appeared to be headed to the August 13th Saratoga Special (do I need to say 'at Saratoga'?).

Thanks for the information on the death of Kitten’s Joy. What a terrible year for Ken Ramsey, his wife just passed away a few months ago. Now his wife’s favorite horse and Ramsey’s premier stallion has died. On top of that Ramsey’s financial difficulties have certainly added to his stress. Happy to see he still has a small racing stable with Saffie Joseph Jr. training for him.

On an unrelated note, I saw that a $1.6 million purchase owned by OXO was running in a cheap claiming race yesterday at Ellis. I can’t recall his name but he is now a gelding to boot. I am still shocked when I see the money spent at the top sales on horses, some of whom will never run a lick.

Had to drive up to Franklin Ky area this week. Passed by Kentucky Downs where they were watering the egg shaped, undulating grass track. Purchased a table for the big races on September 10. Maiden races are $150,000. The highest in the world. On September 10, two $1 million win and your in races, both Grade 2’s. A $750,000 (G2). Two other $600k graded races. It’s amazing how much they are making off the slot machines. They even sent $3,500,000 to Ellis Park to supplement its races. As long as Tennessee continues to outlaw casinos, Ky. Downs is in great shape. Admittedly a large part of the purses applies only to Ky. Breds. For example $70 k of the $150k maiden races comes from the Ky. Thoroughbred Development Fund. So over the 7 day race meet, the purses total almost $18 mil. Last year Joel Rosario was the leading rider. Those purses should assure they get some of the best turf horses in the country and a great jockey colony. I will contribute to some juvenile delinquency by taking my three Nashville grandchildren, ages 15,12 and 8, teaching them how to read the form and placing their bets for them. My wife was sure they would be bored to death last year. Instead they had a great time and have been asking when can they go back for months. Horse racing definitely needs some young blood among its patrons.

FYI, there is a Saffie Joseph Trainer page in Briswatch if you want to track the Ramsey horses they have together:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html

It's long been known amongst horsemen that there are some horses who wouldn't be worth a dam (sorry) if they were allowed to persist in their nasty or studdish behavior. The cheaper ones are gelded right away; you give the good looking ones (i.e., expensive ones) a little extra time to demonstrate that there's no way they will win job at stud because they will not race with the nickel brain they have. So the decision gets tough for some of these horses. If you geld them into their 4YO year, you just don't get the impact of procedure on the brain; it's best done young. <more than you wanted to know about gelding>

I've brought my sons, nieces, and nephew to the track. All had a great time. The 'bug' didn't take for too many. That's alright. Trying to explain the ins and outs of horse racing to anyone, even a kid, challenges your knowledge and basic understanding. I find I have questions of my own I can't answer.

Oooh, did I not mention the Sanford for 2YOs at Saratoga?!

This race was won by Mo Strike:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1548433086412558338
Mo Strike pulled away in the last furlong and was awarded a respectable 85.

BTW, how important is the Sanford in TBred history?

The Diana, for older Turf mares was also run yesterday and was won by In Italian
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1548414707270160385
In Italian won in wire to wire fashion and was awarded a strong 100 Beyer.

Kudos to Bulldog Hanover who is having the fastest run in Harness Racing history. After becoming the only horse to win more than one sub-1:47 mile last week, he added to that with an all age all-time World Record going a mile in 1:45.4 . He also started the streak with a 1:47 mile. This 4YOC is unbelievable, and he did it last night under less than optimal conditions (slight rain and temps in the 60s).

    Who Do You Got?

So, who do you have in this clip:
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1548768294181785600

    Watch till the end.

Do you remember the quote from my trainer as to why you would enter/run a horse when they are looong odds?

Maybe the jockey on the front runner should have taken a peek behind him before that last jump. I’m just an old softie, but I don’t enjoy the hurdles for exactly that reason. I’m surprised PETA hasn’t had it outlawed. And no, I don’t agree with outlawing it. It’s just not my cup of tea.

I was about to decide I knew nothing of handicapping the last few weeks. Finally picked some winners and exotics online playing Ellis Park.

At the risk of offending folks, I am not a fan of the NY bred races at Saratoga. I fully understand it, but I don’t enjoy the state bred races at any of the tracks.

While I am moaning about my dislikes, I wish every race could have at least 8 horses and preferably 10.

I shared my opinion on the jumpers when making observation of the incredibly small number of horses that finish the Grand National relative to what started. Some of those fences are brutal.

Tiz The Law first started in a NY State restricted race, and I'm sure there are many other good ones who did as well (especially in Kentucky). Obviously, racing for a bit more money, with less competition, is desirable from an owner/trainer point of view. What makes the races a bit more watchable is if there are good sires in the state or a lucrative mare foaling program to bring in high quality stock. Sometimes you get to see a horse generate buzz; that's what I look for.
