Ok, I admit ignorance, but why does a horse need 4+ weeks of rest after a 2 minute race? I get that there's a lot of prep/routine/travel/logistics, but as it relates to pure endurance, would the same horse really expect to be slower if they raced on the same track two weeks after a race instead of a five week break? I mean, humans do heats at the Olympics in track and then semifinals and finals over the course of a much shorter period and I don't think their times increase.

It is just the nature of today's refined thoroughbreds. They used to race quite often i) as 2YOs ii) as 3YOs but not so much anymore. Perhaps they get injured more, or require more rest to get that peek performance. But you have to trust the trainers that to maximize their earnings potential they have to wait the 4 or 5 weeks between races to get the results they want. It wasn't uncommon 20 - 30 years ago for starters in the KYD to have 6-10 starts under their belt; now 4-8 seems to be common.

It could be the drugs that are used that has weakened the horses (i.e., use of Lasix permitting horses that bleed to race), or the breed has introduced some poorer genes (i.e., Fast horses like Reviewer [Ruffian's sire] or Meadowlake had notoriously brittle progeny, but they won before they broke down). The more rest for horses so inflicted, the less the chance of a breakdown and thereby extending the career. Note, that the bigger 2YO and Triple Crown races in the past couple of years are without Lasix in an attempt to minimize the Lasix 'plague' from the sire lines; it is a long term project that may take 30 years to see statistical results.

Also, the money for 2YO and 3YO racing has gone up so much that horses are pushed to their limits earlier in life. This causes injuries before their bodies have matured. Horses that do not start till later in life, tend to last longer and are stouter. But they miss many big purses, chances for stud careers, and it is a big expense to the owners and a risk that the horse will be no good after that long investment.

    Just my take.

    Black Eyed Susan 2022 Day

Here are a few races for Friday:

Race 8 at Pimlico, the Distaff Stakes:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...4/summary.html
    [ URL above, May 20, 2022, Pimlico - Race 8, PPs ]
Looks like Exotic West vs. Super Quick here. Exotic West threw her rider, but otherwise has been doing really well. Super Quick has been facing tougher. We'll see who wins. Better rider, but will it be enough. Into Vanishing is not too shabby. (Not Too Shabby is not a bad horse name).

Race 10 at Pimlico, the Miss Preakness:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...5/summary.html
    [ URL above, May 20, 2022, Pimlico - Race 10, PPs ]
Under The Stars is a likely favorite. This horse might be suffering from whiplash; she's gone from Baffert to Yakteen to McCarthy; and she's not the only horse to do this? I wonder why? She gets back the great Flavian Prat (who apparently is at Pimlico on Friday, but not Saturday). Looks like Happy Soul's last race was a throw out, so why not give her another shot.

Race 12 at Pimlico, the Pimlico Special:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...1/summary.html
    [ URL above, May 20, 2022, Pimlico - Race 12, PPs ]
Frankly, I remember it being much more special in previous years.
Vindictive gets Irad! Untreated looks like he needs to be treated.

Race 13 at Pimlico is the Black Eyed Susan:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
    [ URL above, May 20, 2022, Pimlico - Race 13, PPs ]
Your race favorite will be Adare Manor. Remember what I said about Baffert to Yakteen to McCarthy? It happens here too. John Velasquez does the honors this time. Lower quality field than the KY Oaks, just as much money. Better plan, but not as much prestige. Why don't they make the KY Oaks, Black Eyed Susan, and one of the NY Triple Tiara races a triple crown for fillies? I'm sure they thought of it! But maybe that would discourage fillies from trying the Triple Crown races (the real show). I think you'll get odds on Beguine; she looks like she is rapidly improving.

    Preakness Day 2022

Here are some races at Pimlico on Preakness Day:

I found the stakes races to not be of the same quality of KYD day, so this is a short list.

The Chick Lang Stakes, Race 9:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...4/summary.html
    [ url above, May 21, 2022, Pimlico - Race 9, PPs ]
    Some nice 3YO sprinters here.
Old Homestead is undefeated and the likely chalk. Cogburn and Whelan Spring should be right there. My Handsome Man doesn't look good. I'd lean toward Lightning Larry, but what do I know?

The Sir Barton Stakes, Race 11:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
    [ url above, May 21, 2022, Pimlico - Race 11, PPs ]
Where did Ethereal Road go? He went to Race 11! Unikee and The Addison Pour can be competitive with ER if he doesn't bring his A game.

For the turfers, The Jim McKay Sprint Race 12:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
    [ url above, May 21, 2022, Pimlico - Race 12, PPs ]
Loved Jim McKay, a big supporter of Maryland horse racing.

    The Preakness, Race 13:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
    [ url above, May 21, 2022, Pimlico - Race 13, PPs ]
I'm going to go against the grain and pick Secret Oath. Her Kentucky Oaks was dynamite. If she repeats, she wins. There will be an honest pace with two speedsters (Armagnac and Early Voting) up front, and I expect Epicenter to be right behind. I think Secret Oath has a better brush than Simplification, Simplification's 1 hole trip is not good for a closer. Happy Jack has blinkers on... So?! Calumet Farm is not winning another leg of the Triple Crown this week. Skippylongstockings is the name that has been waiting to grace the name of glasses throughout Maryland; perhaps the wait will continue. Creative Minister is a repainted Taiba. Fenwick is the Dickens entry.
My triple is Secret Oath, Epicenter, and Early Voting holds on for third.

    Preakness betting

So after losing all my Derby bets I'm taking a slightly different tact, cover everything with only a 9 horse field. I didn't give the Derby winner a thought; he wasn't in the field 48 hours earlier and had a paltry Beyer of like 83. Who knew? So, I'm playing the 3 longest shots $2 to W, P, S, then boxing the other 6 in tri's and super's and even adding Skippy in a box. I'll win something, but if chalk happens then I'll lose a fair amount; I need something like 7, 2,5,4 ticket to cash. I've been having issues with TVG in depositing funds other from my checking account, so I'll be going to a sportsbook Saturday to pay cash and get physical slips. Just hoping I can do some .10 supers and .50 tris.

TVG was unreachable by me about 2 hours before the KYD, so if you are considering a bet there, do it early or perhaps log in early. Of course, your 3 long shots may not be at post time. At Monmouth Park, you do get that for Fixed Odds betting. Not sure if they work some formula for combining pools (probably not, but it won't matter much with the huge pool size).

I like your bets. Anything can happen in the Classics as we have seen.

In the Distaff Stakes, Super Quick wasn't just quick, she was fast and dominating:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
The stretch run is in the latter half of the interview with winning trainer Norm Casse:
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1527732560951840768
Super Quick was awarded the top Beyer of the day, 107.

The Miss Preakness stakes was won by Lady Scarlet, who was awarded an 87 Beyer:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1527745299195654144

The Pimlico Special was won by First Captain who was awarded a 98 Beyer:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1527764083738611712
Let's acknowledge this $1.5M auctioned yearling, who was bred, and is partially owned by Food Network denizen Bobby Flay.

Bobby Flay was having a day. Mentioned previously in this forum, he had yet another horse win on this day when Pizza Bianca won the Hilltop Stakes:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
She won the BC Juvinile Filly Turf as a 2YO. Flay bred both of these horses, so he seems to really be 'cooking' in both his horse and food endeavors. He's had a string of paramours too, so does that mean he is successful or not there too?
Give credit too to Cristophe Clement, the trainer of Pizza Bianca; Clement has been mentioned here before as an unsung and unnoticed trainer of worth.

In the big race, the Black Eyed Susan, it was Interstatedaydream, who got the jump on Adare Manor, and couldn't be caught in the stretch, and was awarded a 91 Beyer:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1527770694670352384
The fractions were moderate, so pace makes the race again.

What was happening 2 years ago when Adare Manor was named? She is 3YO. There is another horse, a 3YOF also, a great standardbred trotter racing in Canada named Adare Castle. Too much of a coincidence.

The DevilPony will be in the infield of Pimlico today. Having fun and maybe sharing insights me. I hope you all have a great day.

Reports from DevilPony were fantastic. He had a great time with his friends. Lots of chalk hitting the board meant W/P/S tickets were scored all day. The Grandstand side of Pimlico emptied out during the day and the 'posse' went over and occupied front row, finish line in the grandstand. GREAT SEATS, in the shade. Cashing Tickets.. some brews. Great Experience.

It was hot and speed was holding up on the dirt and turf.

In the Chick Lang, really? Lightning Larry at 12-1! He got a 91 Beyer:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on

In the Sir Barton Stakes. It was Ethereal Road easily.
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
He took his time and was awarded a 90 Beyer.

In the Jim McKay on the turf, Caratori used his speed to win wire to wire and was awarded a 101 Beyer:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on

And in the main event, the Preakness, it was Early Voting who didn't take the bait and kept within himself to keep the early pace modest to win.

With modest early fractions, the race became a sprint for the latter half, and Early Voting's superior speed and forward positioning was too much for the competition. He was awarded the days top Beyer, a 105. An excellent race plan.
One has to wonder if Epicenter will try to become the second horse since Alydar to finish 2nd in all 3 Triple Crown races.

Gun Runner has been fairly successful as a sire. He only had to wait until the second classic that his progeny was eligible for to get a win. Impressive.

So I may offend some, but I was not that impressed with Early Voting. He ran second to slow fraction early on. Down the stretch he looked like a drunken sailor. Asmussen was critical of Rosario’s ride on Epicenter, and I believe rightfully so. The track was biased toward front runners. And maybe this is just a weak crop of three year olds. It certainly doesn’t compare to last year’s. Having said that, Early Voting won. Brown handled him carefully and had him ready. They are going to point Early Voting toward the Travers, but will he go 1 1/4 miles? Inquiring minds want to know.

Pace make the race. If Bold Forbes can win the Belmont, Early Voting can win the Travers. It just depends on whether some other horses want to push the pace early or not. If the pace was pushed early in Preakness, MAYBE Epicenter wins, but only if he is stalking. You have to be aggressive if you're going for the big money. It's not like you're going for the Triple Crown or anything.

Won five of my 6 Preakness bets

So not disappointed, just needed some of the longer shots to fill trifecta and super bets, but I won money and won two pools at my local hangout, so a nice day.

Had hoped for a bigger payday...

On to the Belmont, looking forward to it.

Good for you. My trifecta ran 1st, 2nd and 4th. I only boxed 4 horses. Aside from Epicenter the other Derby horses did nothing. With a faster pace, the filly might have had a chance. I was rooting for D Wayne. He looks to have the best 3 year old filly.

One last chance to win a tri in the Belmont.

Not a lot to offer you, a lull as we warm up for the Belmont, but if you're desperate to see a Past Performance sheet, I'll give you a couple:

At Churchill Downs TODAY Friday, in the first race, Todd Pletcher has an expensive 2YO colt:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
[URL above, Friday May 27, 2022, Churchill Downs - Race 1, PPs ]
Summonyourcourage, something surely missing on the political front, but can be found starting his career in Louisville. This $500K yearling had a good training tightener, but I'd have to say that the homebred colt next to him, by Justify, named Justafever, had an even better one. Both colts are starting for the first time.

On Saturday, there isn't much, but I would note that there is an interesting entry in the $62.5k Optional Claimer:

Highly Motivated was a starter in last year's KYD, still listed as being won by Medina Spirit (not DQ'd - collectors' item). HM did not start again in 2021, but he is coming back in 2022; probably needed last race. I had Stage Raider marked as a horse to watch for a while; continues to improve.

On Monday, a couple of stakes races at Lone Star Park:

    The Texas Derby:

A.P.'s Secret and Strike Hard should be familiar names that were considered factors early on the KYD trail. They are likely to battle over major spoils here. Their owners must be pinching themselves that they can run for this kind of money, but then, this is America.

Rated R Superstar has been pretty good, and has been racing against the best competition of the bunch. Shaaz is the least experienced, is a Baffert refugee, is on the improve, has Florent Geroux (the best jockey), and was a $1.1M yearling. BTW, the winning jockey Sonny Leon of this year's KYD is on the #2, just coming off his 10 day penalty.

    Happy Memorial day to all.

    HISA is Happening

For those of you who are concerned about incremental or wholescale drugging or whipping reform in the Horseracing industry, the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority is an attempt to 1) raise the level of said safety and integrity across the North American continent for Horse Racing 2) set nationwide standards 3) include all forms of Equine racing (i.e., Thoroughbred, Standardbred, Quarterhorse, Arabian, Appaloosa). While it is not (yet) universally accepted by breeds or states, it is at least a strawman for some and the accepted practice for a large swath of others.

It is targeted to start on July 1st, 2022, and here is a website for the stake in the ground rules:

Summonyourcourage, something surely missing on the political front, but can be found starting his career in Louisville. This $500K yearling had a good training tightener, but I'd have to say that the homebred colt next to him, by Justify, named Justafever, had an even better one. Both colts are starting for the first time.

On Saturday, there isn't much, but I would note that there is an interesting entry in the $62.5k Optional Claimer:

Rated R Superstar caught my attention. A 9 year old gelding with $1.6 million in winnings, 11 out of 60 wins, and raced in some graded stakes. For some reason I love these old geldings who have a life time of trying to win. He has already won over $400,000 this year. It’s unusual to see a 9 year old still this good. I did a little further searching and found he was claimed for $50k January 2021. He has made over $500,000 since their claim. While not as good a story as this year’s Derby winner, still a great claim for a smaller midwestern trainer. This would be my dream claim, if I ever bought a racehorse.

Lester Piggott died early this morning. He was the the King of non-US based Jockeys and perhaps he was the best grass rider in the world for an extended period of time. He was Willie the Shoe, Eddie Arcaro, and Irad for a LOOOooong time. He won 9 Epsom Derbys!! RIP Mr. Piggott.
If I had a TVG account 30 years ago, I'd have bet him everytime. A progression bettor's delight (I learned about progression betting when Steve Cauthen had the bug; it's risky but it worked).

In the Friday 2YO race, another first time starter won rather than the two horses I was highlighting:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
Owen's Leap did fine. This Bolt D'Oro colt was not much the best, but at 5 furlongs he was a bit better first time out than the other 2 interesting horses who finished 2nd and 3rd.

On Saturday, Highly Motivated beat Stage Raider by a neck in a spirited stretch duel:

Maybe he'll try stakes company next as he gets into better shape.
    Here's a video:

Highly Motivated is on the inside. BTW, Stage Raider is Justify's half brother.

Here is a bonus race for Monday and for you turfers. The Shoemaker Mile at Santa Anita:

What is notable about this race is that Flavian Prat and Irad Ortiz are on the west coast; The east coast is so bereft of good purses, that's where they had to go to make a decent living. Poor guys.

    Survey.

We're just about at the mid-point between the KYD and the Belmont. We have a few races today, mentioned upstream.

If there are subjects that are covered too much, or you'd like to see more of here, please speak up (in public or private). Would like to hear. Not promising I'll be able to accommodate but I'll try.

Also, some chewing gum for those who are interested. I've been thinking about springing this on you guys during a lull in the action. Here goes.

There are many songs that you might associate with horses (The Lone Ranger riding to the William Tell Overture!, Call To The Post, Camptown Races (a Standardbred Race meet by the way), but it is unusual that I can only think that it is our Triple Crown races that have songs played and sung right before them as an anthem of introduction just as the horses are being introduced. It is a wonderful and unique artifact of these races that makes them stand out above other races in our sport.

Does anyone have a Favorite Song associated with a Triple Crown Race?

    The choices are:

    1) The KYD: My Old Kentucky Home
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUBAmx17nJ4
The original lyrics have objectionable elements in them and have been changed to be more acceptable to the times

    2) The Preakness: O Maryland My Maryland
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CU33oJ75Ktg
In 2021, this song was repealed as Maryland's state song because of its' pro-Confederate nature and lyrics:
    https://www.washingtonian.com/2021/0...been-repealed/

3a) The Belmont (early years): The Sidewalks of New York a.k.a., East Side West Side
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g211obP5VGM

3b) In 1997, the song associated with the Belmont was changed to Frank Sinatra's New York, New York:
Here's the Chairman of the Board himself:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMfz1jlyQrw

Of course, the Yankees play this same song when they win, but they play Liza Minnelli's version when they lose; go figure. But I digress.

Whether you're an abolitionist or a traditionalist, these are great songs.

    What say you?

I have to say that I like them all. I find 1) and 2) to be particularly stirring. I appreciate that people in the crowd sing along. It is tough to reconcile the imagery and facts of 1) and 2) with the realization that my dear horse racing came out of this, but so did so many other things. I will have to short circuit the revulsion I have for the tainted origin and original lyrics of the songs of 1) and 2) and accept that the tradition of Horse Racing and the continuous improvement in horsemanship, and ourselves is what is being celebrated (better lyrics, better treatment of the horses, but the same tunes). So if I have to pick one, I'll go with 1). 1), 2), 3b) are all good. I never felt 3a) viscerally.
