Just looked at these and notice 7 out of 40 Into Mischief colts. Maybe just more precocious as 2 year olds? Several Gun Runners whose offspring have run well in his first years as a stud. Forte was certainly the best 2 year old, both by record and speed ratings. Cox has an interesting horse, Victory Formation, with a bullet work recently. I assume we will see him again fairly soon at Fairgrounds or Oaklawn. This winter and early spring should be fun and hopefully enlightening. Also wonder at this point if the best bet is all other 3 year old males. Just looked back and not at 3/5!

Victory Formation was mentioned wrt Saturday.

The top Beyer of the day was an 83 that was awarded to 2YOC Victory Formation:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1596589766748868612
In this Optional Claiming race (the new allowance) Victory Formation was on the rail and came back after being passed.
I think the trainers are evolving as to how they bring colts to the KYD.
They can give them a few starts as 2YOs and give time off, or just start them late in their 2YO year and race them through to the KYD.

Into Mischief's are outrageously good, but then maybe some of what we see on the list is just expensive yearlings going to top trainers. After all, only Authentic has won the KYD for Into Mischief (who is probably on the back 9 of his stud career). His best offspring after Authentic was IMHO Gamine (a sprinter) and Goldenscents (turf). Gamine won 9 of 11 and finished 3rd in the KY Oaks (probably too long for her). Mandaloun should be mentioned as he was awarded the KYD (after a long drawn out DQ to Medina Spirit).

    2YO Action Saturday

Some good races this weekend if you're interested in the KYD (who here isn't?).

On Friday 12/2/22, at Del Mar:

There is a 2YOF maiden race:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...5/summary.html
    [ URL above; November 2, 2022; Del Mar - Race 1; PPs ]
Sweet Trouble is a $600k yearling by Into Mischief with some impressive bullet works.

    On Saturday 12/3/22, at Aqueduct:

    The Demoiselle for 2YOF:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
    [ URL above; November 3, 2022; Aqueduct - Race 6; PPs ]
There are several nice, lightly raced fillies here. Julia Shining and Foggy Night have high rates. Royal Spa is interesting; won her only (maiden) race and is by underrated sire Violence.

    The Remsen for 2YOC:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...4/summary.html
    [ URL above; November 3, 2022; Aqueduct - Race 7; PPs ]
Tuskegee Airmen would appear to get the nod over Arctic Arrogance.

The Cigar Mile for older horses:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
    [ URL above; November 3, 2022; Aqueduct - Race 9; PPs ]
A race recently won by horses like Maximum Security, 2YO siring surprise Sharp Azteca, Stay Thirsty, and Tonalist.
Perhaps not the big names of previous years, but Zandon will be there. White Abarrio and the tough Mind Control will also participate.

At Tampa Bay Downs, Ein Gedi gets her 2nd start for Myracehorse and our lister TheDevilMadeMeDoIt:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
    [ URL above; November 3, 2022; Tampa Downs - Race 8; PPs ]
Ein Gedi extends out another 2f in the mile turf contest. Best of Luck!
Another turf race of some interest; the Hollywood Derby at Del Mar for 3YOs:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
    [ URL above; November 3, 2022; Del Mar - Race 9; PPs ]
Wit and Celestial City should be fighting it out.

A result to report, a horse broke his maiden at Turfway Park in his 5th start:

Blue Devil is by Uncle Mo and may bear watching.

Lily Poo won the maiden race at Del Mar:

Saturday was really sloppy/muddy at Aqueduct, so I'll need to see more to decide if the results were legit or not.

In the Demoiselle, Julia Shining was the winner:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1599127054125268992
The full sister to champion Malathaat showed that she may be cut from the same cloth.

In the Remsen, Dubyahnell was a moderate surprise at $10.
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1599157959476465664
Dubyahnell and Arctic Arrogance were much the best and will be of interest when they show up on a dry track.

Mind Control won his swan song in a spirited stretch battle in the Cigar Mile:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1599148703268634624
It is good to see White Abarrio put in a good effort.

Ein Gedi put forth a flat effort:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
I thought she raced a little greenly, but also was pinned on the rail for a while and was unsettled as she came off the rail on the final turn. I also noticed that her back legs were bandaged; that either suggests Ein Gedi might interfere with herself or has some tendon issues. Here is a URL that explains possibilities:
    https://horseracingsense.com/horse-t...hem-6-reasons/

Speaking Scout won the Hollywood Derby:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1599217917488353286
A couple of observations here; the 4, Handy Dandy, was boxed and shut down twice in the stretch (worth a look next out), also Wit came from way back to finish 3rd by only 3/4 of a length (also worthy of consideration next out).

Good Magic, Justify, and Bolt D'oro have shown to be top 2YO sires in this newest crop of sires. They are 2, 3, and 4 below Into Mischief in earnings for 2YOs. But Sharp Azteca bears watching as the 7th top sire of 2YO earnings. I'm sure he didn't get the quality/type of mares that the other 4 received. Breeders are really good at recognizing what works and what doesn't when the foals come out and later race. I expect an improved showing of the Sharp Azteca tribe in the next 2 to 3 years.

    Potpourri

I had mentioned months ago about progress being made in horse racing to prevent catastrophic breakdowns. Scott Palmer was working on a 'wearable' that would help track changes to a horse's gait.
Here is a recent posting at the Blood Horse by a Dr. Benson, with a different way of approaching the problem:
    https://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-rac...TTjbfxUOFabD5I

Good to see that there is at least incremental progress and different ideas, with the means to implement it.

I noticed that one of the big races in Canada is being renamed. The Queen's Plate is being renamed the King's Plate; ostensibly because the lead monarch of the Commonwealth of Great Britain is now King Charles and not Queen Elizabeth; the race started in 1860 (the race was known as the Queen's Plate between 1860 to 1901 and 1952 to 2022). Historically, the race has been named in honor of the reigning monarch. OK, there are multiple QE II races around, but why do this? They don't rename the Secretariat Stakes when another inspiring horse comes along (oh no, don't give them ideas). Queen Elizabeth was a horsewoman; as far as I know King Charles is not very.. horse oriented. They should have just left it named in honor of the Queen. Idle hands are the Devil's playground.

KYD season will be kicking off in less than a month. Traditionally it starts with Jerome at Aqueduct on New Year's Day; KYD points will be awarded. There are minor 2YO races happening all the time, but those horses that trainers think are contenders are training up for those races with KYD points.
There are 3 more races in 2022 with KYD points for the 2023 KYD. The next, and a very auspicious one, is the Los Alamitos Futurity on December 17. The race used to be known as the Cash Call Futurity. There are a few notable previous winners include Quality Road and Ghostzapper.

Here is a list of the KYD Point races coming up:
    https://www.twinspires.com/kentuckyd...d-to-the-derby

Potential contenders for the KY Oaks might be found at the Starlet at Los Alamitos on Saturday:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...99/summary.htm
[URL above; Saturday December 10, 2022; Los Alamitos TB - Race 9, PPs]
Faiza (Pratt) will be up against a slightly more experienced Uncontrollable (Mike Smith) and Pride of the Nile (Hernandez). The horse that finished 2nd to Faiza, Lily Poo, won impressively last weekend to break her maiden.

    Food For Thought

I took note of the 8th race at Aqueduct yesterday, thanks to Bob "Hollywood" Heyden:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1600957371718651905

The particular items of interest are:
    1) 3 horse race
    2) Mosienko was a decent favorite
    3) Mosienko was in the 4 or 5 path (according to the write-up chart)
    4) Mosienko lost by about 6 feet (1/2 length)

I'd be livid at the jockey who ate up lengths on the outside, just to lose by a few feet.

I've seen many tables suggesting how much distance is lost by a horse racing wide vs. on the rail (your race winner).

Here's an example calculation I found on the net:

Position from the rail around a turn

    1 = .94 lengths
    2 = 1.88 lengths
    3 = 2.83 lengths
    4 = 3.77 lengths
    5 = 4.71 lengths

So Mosienko lost about 40 feet/4 lengths (10 feet per length is my estimate) by being in the 4-5 position on the turn (one turn race). There was no need for this. I get the idea of not wanting to be blocked by a horse so you stay to the outside, but most jockeys can find a lane. In a 3 horse race you definitely find a lane.

Maybe hindsight is 20/20 and Dylan would not repeat this mistake. But if you're handicapping, looking at the write-up, this horse was the best and didn't get to the line in time (or distance).

Faiza won a tough stretch battle with Pride Of The Nile (POTN):

    https://twitter.com/i/status/1601739757477720064
There was an Inquiry because of an (apparent) incident at the head of the stretch when it looked like Faiza lugged in on Doin It The Hard Way (#1). But it was actually the inside horse (POTN) that ran wide. But no change of order occurred since it did not affect the result of the race.
Faiza is a daughter of Girvin, enjoying a very good 1st crop at the races; Girvin's stud fee was just raised from $7.5k to $25k.

This week Jason Service, trainer of Maximum Security (amongst others) pled guilty to the use of illegal drugs (for his horses). He and Peter Navarro were the most prominent names in a dragnet that pulled in 2 dozen denizens of the backstretch in an illegal drug ring.

Additionally, the West's who own Maximum Security (remember he finished first in the KYD only to be taken down for interference) have agreed to a re-distribution of the Saudi Cup ($20M) purse money. When and where that will happen is unknown at the time; nor is any other discussion of purse redistribution for other races where Maximum Security earned a check.

I've written about Bob Baffert's issues with drugs. And a bit about HISA (now in mothballs) and its attempts to get common drug rules and better testing across North America. This goes toward improving racing integrity, which is something we all can get behind.

Just to add to your resources, here is a pointer to a list of Drugs, Ratings, and Policies that are in use here in North America:

I didn’t realize a Federal court had ruled HISA unconstitutional. Your comment sent me searching for more information. I find it interesting that the major thoroughbred states support HISA but the usual state’s rights crowd filed the lawsuit. Admittedly I don’t know much about the intricacies of HISA but the overall goal of having uniform regulations throughout the country made sense to me. That the small time tracks opposed HISA makes me wonder what drug crap goes on at the more bush league tracks. I also wonder whether the smaller tracks have more or less breakdowns than the major tracks. I have some concerns the PETA crowd will ultimately try to do to horse racing what they did to the circus.

Just a little action this weekend.

The Los Alamitos Futurity is this Saturday:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...99/summary.htm
    [ URL above, December 17, 2022; Los Alamitos TB - Race 4, PPs ]

3 of the 5 entries are trained by Baffert, who is still ineligible to train a horse for the upcoming KYD.
There are 2 maidens in the field and they are the only horses not trained by Baffert. Karnac thinks Baffert will be the trainer of the winning horse.
Arabian Lion looks like the best of this bunch; do not confuse this horse with the presumptive early favorite for KYD23, Arabian Knight. However, Arabian Lion does have a better pedigree, being that his 3rd dam is Personal Ensign, and out of the top freshman sire Justify.

The Remington Springboard Mile is an interesting 2YO race:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
    [ URL above, December 17, 2022; Remington Park - Race 12, PPs ]
Giant Mischief is a late developing colt; he is not running in the NY Stallion stakes races this weekend and ventures out to a better field (and purse). Echo Again had a super maiden win, but didn't fire in his next race.

Word on the street is that Forte' (your BC Juvenile winner) is pointing toward the Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream (March 4, 2023).

A lot of horses here, but what I noticed was that American Lion, running in the Los Alamitos Futurity Saturday, is #3? Over Cave Rock no less. Carmel Road and Fort Bragg are also mentioned. He looks like a nice colt but this is bogus. Giant Mischief, who beat American Lion last out, and running at Remington this weekend, is 8th on the list. At least American Lion has (a whole) 2 starts under his belt; Arabian Knight (#1 on the list) only has 1 start.

Practical Move ran a strong race. American Lion was terrible; spit the bit in the stretch.

But the talk about this race was about the 2nd place horse, Giant Mischief. If you watch the start of the race (use video link directly above), Giant Mischief (#5) misses the start and gives up 5 lengths. GM makes a tremendous sweeping move going into the final turn, gives ground in the stretch only to come on again. They will work on his starts out of the gait, but this is a talented horse.

Also at Remington, just before the Springboard Mile, the half-sister to Essential Quality, Famed, continues to win in minor stakes:

    Nothing This Weekend, But..

There is nothing this weekend, but Monday 12/26 there will be some interesting races:

The Gun Runner for 2YOC is being run at the Fair Grounds, race 11:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
[ URL above, Monday December 26, 2022; Fair Grounds - Race 11; PPs]
Determinedly appears to be the favorite, but none of these colts looks like top level material. But someone has to win and that horse will no doubt go on to the other Fair Grounds prep races.

The Lettelier Memorial, for 2YOF is Race 8:

This race looks more likely to get a contender for the KYO, probably could win the Gun Runner!

For older horses, the once very good Country Grammer is running in the San Antonio at Santa Anita:

[ URL above, Monday December 26, 2022; Santa Anita Park - Race 6; PPs]
By far Country Grammer is the best horse, but he has not been the same horse since Saudi Arabia last winter.

For older horses is the Malibu in Race 10:

Taiba and Forbidden Kingdom will throw it down. Is Forbidden Kingdom in better shape now than his last race? Otherwise Taiba looks the best. This is the race last year that Flightline ran his 3rd race and blew away the field in his last sprint; this was Flightline's 3rd lifetime start.

Determinedly appears to be the favorite, but none of these colts looks like top level material. But someone has to win and that horse will no doubt go on to the other Fair Grounds prep races.

The Lettelier Memorial, for 2YOF is Race 8:

The Gun Runner was won by Jace's Road:

Nice race for the 2YO son of Quality Road.

In the Letellier Memorial, Dazzling Blue continues to impress:

    https://twitter.com/i/status/1607492747929464833
She went to the front and did as much as she needed to. This is a nice filly.

The San Antonio Stakes finished by wrote with Country Grammar trouncing the field as expected:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1607493482578321408
Perhaps CG has shaken off his post Middle East funk.

    Taiba dominated the Malibu Stakes:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1607527595230531584
Also posting an impressive improvement is Forbidden Kingdom who led the race early, setting the pace; this horse came on again in the stretch. His most impressive races was going to the front and daring the other horses/jockeys to catch him. This is a horse rounding into form and is worth considering in whatever his next race is.

Taiba has now won 3 Grade I stakes this year. He won the Santa Anita Derby, Pennsylvania Derby, and the Malibu
Who are the contenders for 3YO of the year? Epicenter has (only) won two Grade I's, finished 2nd in the KYD and Preakness, and won 3 Grade IIs. He finished 2nd in the Haskell, 3rd in the BC Classic, and 12th in the KYD. I think these are the 2 top contenders.

Will there be an anti Baffert sentiment working against Taiba? Epicenter wins on the number of really good races including winning the Travers.

    Good Point!

Unraveling that angle further, Taiba was NOT under Baffert's care for 2 races, the Santa Anita Derby (beating Messier) and the Kentucky Derby (finished 12th). Messier does not look like the horse that most thought going into the SAD and KYD, but he hasn't won since February. Epicenter was a strong player during the Triple Crown season. I imagine that last point will carry the day.

    Slow Weekend - HBD

All of our 2YOs will have a birthday this Sunday as they become 3YOs.

Entries are not yet out for the Smarty Jones (first KYD points for the new year) at Oaklawn Park. On rare occassions Stakes races move from one track to another; The Smarty Jones Stakes was at PARX last year. By moving the race from Dec 31 to Jan 1 they have unusually changed the race from a 2YO race to a 3YO race!

Oaklawn Park is having a 2YO jamboree on the last day of the year (all 2YO races). There are a couple of races that caught my eye:

The Renaissance Stakes looks like the highest quality/accomplished race of the card:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...2/summary.html
    [ URL above, December 31, 2022; Oaklawn Park - Race 6, PPs ]
Two Eagles River might be a good one; he has a very high Beyer first out, and finished 2nd in his only other start where he bled; he will be on Lasix for the first time (betting angle) but remember that for the KYD many of the prep races exclude the use of Lasix. Two Eagles River is from the first crop of Cloud Computing (Preakness Winner); we've heard precious little from this young stallion, but perhaps there are good things to come. Also of interest is the undefeated Count de Monet.

Also on the card, in race 2, is Magical Song, the daughter of the great Songbird. Magical Song closed fast in her debut and will be a contender with a better start.
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...5/summary.html
    [ URL above, December 31, 2022; Oaklawn Park - Race 2, PPs ]

The more interesting race that I found is the Harlan's Holiday at Gulfstream Park:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
    [ URL above, December 31, 2022; Gulfstream Park - Race 10, PPs ]
Skippylongstockings (3rd in the Belmont and winner of the West Virgina Derby) makes his return to the races after a moderate layoff. Simplification (winner of this year's Fountain of Youth Stakes) returns to Gulfstream Park (he lost to Skippylongstockings in the WV Derby).
Harlan's Holiday was the sire of Into Mischief and is a pretty fair horse to see in any horse's pedigree.

Sad to hear that the very nice racehorse Code Of Honor was euthanized because of complications associated with Colic. Colic and Laminitis are common diseases/illnesses in race horses. Treatments are not as effective as we'd like them to be.
