We are down to 12 unbeaten teams for the 2021-2022 season of men's college basketball, listed below in KenPom rating order. Each of these teams will play at least one game this week.

    [2] Purdue (8-0): at [100] Rutgers 12/9, vs. [73] NC State in Brooklyn 12/12
    [3] Baylor (8-0): vs. [6] Villanova 12/12
    [11] USC (8-0): vs. [191] Eastern Kentucky 12/7, vs. [291] Long Beach State 12/12
    [12] Arizona (7-0): vs. [108] Wyoming 12/8, at [18] Illinois 12/11
    [15] LSU (8-0): at [89] Georgia Tech 12/11
    [25] Arkansas (8-0): vs. [230] Charlotte 12/7, at [38] Oklahoma 12/11
    [34] San Francisco (9-0): vs. [104] Fresno State 12/8
[41] Colorado State (9-0): vs. [46] Mississippi State in Fort Worth 12/11
    [65] Iowa State (8-0): vs. [22] Iowa 12/9 , vs. [274] Jackson State 12/12
    [90] Minnesota (7-0): vs. [23] Michigan State 12/8, at [16] Michigan 12/11
    [96] Weber State (8-0): at [47] Washington State 12/8, vs. [NR] Maine-Fort Kent 12/11
    [108] Wyoming (8-0): at [12] Arizona 12/8, vs. [165] Utah Valley 12/11

Note that Arizona and Wyoming play each other, so this list will have at least one fewer team by next week.

And Arizona played OrSt Sunday afternoon (12/5) beating them 90-65. It was a fairly scrappy ballgame, both teams fought hard and OrSt never looked vanquished, even though they were thoroughly beaten. The pace was very fast and the Beavers had way too many turnovers--but a lot were forced by the Cats' aggressiveness.

Arizona was paced by a soph, Bennedict Mathurin, who had 29 points (shot 11 for 8, with 4 treys). Excellent defender. I see him as an AA at some point in his career.

Anyway, this Wildcat team is very talented and quite deep. If they play this well through the rest of the season, they will be highly seeded, maybe a no. 1. Tommy Lloyd has rebuilt this team to win and, so far, at 7-0, they have. As brevity observed, they play a highly rated Wyoming in Tucson on Wednesday. But they also have additional serious opponents before the year is over: Illinois on 12/11, at Tennessee on 12/22 and at UCLA on 12/30 as the Pac12 season ripens. I don't expect them to go through the season undefeated, but they should be favored, much as we usually are.

Arizona will be a tough out.

AZ plays very well. Their big Euro guys are polished. It's really surprising how that program bounced back so well and so quickly after Sean Miller got the boot.

Arizona absolutely obliterated previously unbeaten Wyoming last night. Wyoming is not highly rated on KenPom, but still. Zona appears good enough to give UCLA a run for its money in the Pac 12.

    Sean who?

Yeah, time for an update. The bottom 3 unbeaten teams from this week's list all suffered their first loss Wednesday.

Minnesota lost to visiting Michigan State 75-67.
Weber State lost at Washington State 94-60.
    Wyoming lost at Arizona 94-65.

Minnesota's loss ends a weird coincidence where every Power 5 conference not named the ACC had a pair of unbeaten teams.

Big Ten: Purdue, no longer Minnesota
    Big XII: Baylor, Iowa State
    Pac-12: USC, Arizona
    SEC: LSU, Arkansas

Anyway, this leaves 9 unbeaten teams. San Francisco (10-0) won their only game this week and is safe for now. Who will join them?

Purdue goes down 70-68 to Rutgers on a Ron Harper Jr. buzzer-beater 3.

Boilers played their first game as a #1 and they are now 0-1 as #1.

I call it the Jayhawk Special. Someone else can do the research, but I feel like there was a time where Kansas would ascend to #1 once a season and lose hours later in the ESPN Big Monday game, usually to Kansas State. I think it happened twice in one particular season.

It’s uncharacteristic of them, but Duke played the role of Kansas last week. And now Purdue.

Overlooked winner tonight? NC State, Purdue’s next opponent. They can argue that Rutgers was a trap game.

    Purdue looked good tonight.

    Boiler up!

Heavy is the head that wears the crown of #1. Ask Duke and Purdue.

Won't they still be ranked #1 when they play NCSU on Sunday?

Arkansas gets their first loss to Oklahoma 88-66, playing on a neutral court in Tulsa.

Eric Musselman, the Razorbacks coach, got 2 technical fouls in a 5-second span and was ejected. Jordan Goldwire hit all four free throws in response. He had 14 points, 6 assists, and 3 steals for the Sooners.

    7 unbeaten teams remain.

Colorado State joins San Francisco as the nation's only 10-0 teams so far, beating Garrison Brooks and Mississippi State 66-63.

They are #26 in both polls and figure to be ranked Monday, but I wonder: where do they stand amongst teams from mid-major conferences? Compare their three best victories to those of AP #14 Houston.

Colorado State: beat [39] St. Mary's, [48] Mississippi State, [59] Creighton
Houston: beat [53] Oregon, [58] Virginia, [77] Butler

Houston also has a neutral court loss to Wisconsin. We may learn more soon, as AP #9 Alabama plays Houston tonight and Colorado State 10 days later.

Arizona (9-0) and LSU (9-0) each bounced back from double digit deficits in the first half to beat Illinois (playing at home in the State Farm Center) and Georgia Tech (playing close to home in the State Farm Arena), respectively. I guess it is wise to insure yourself against potential losses.

4 teams made it through the week without a first loss. 3 more (Baylor, USC, and Iowa State) play Sunday.

Whew, AZ is impressive. Mathurin is a deadeye assassin. No team has played defense against them yet but my goodness, they are something else.

We still have 7 unbeaten teams. Here's who they play this week.

    [1] Baylor (9-0): at [52] Oregon 12/18
    [7] Arizona (9-0): vs. [186] Northern Colorado 12/15, vs. [206] Cal Baptist 12/18
[13] LSU (9-0): vs. [334] Northwestern State 12/14, vs. [86] Louisiana Tech in Bossier City 12/18
    [17] USC (10-0): vs. [94] UC-Irvine 12/15, vs. [96] Georgia Tech in Phoenix 12/18
[32] San Francisco (10-0): vs. [124] Grand Canyon in Phoenix 12/18, at [102] Arizona State 12/19
[37] Colorado State (10-0): vs. [152] Tulsa in Fort Worth 12/18
    [50] Iowa State (10-0): vs. [308] SE Louisiana 12/19

I would think we'll still have these 7 teams without a loss a week from now, but you never know. Baylor has to play on that bewildering forest court in Eugene. San Francisco has to play a pair of games against decently rated opponents with start times less than 24 hours apart, in different venues in the greater Phoenix area.

Pretty sneaky, Colorado State*. They'll remain undefeated at least until their next scheduled game December 28.

Denver Post: CSU Rams men’s basketball game vs. No. 6 Alabama, Tulsa canceled due to COVID-19 “concerns”

The No. 23 Rams (10-0) had been slated to play the Golden Hurricane (6-5) on Saturday in the Hoops Hype XL Collegiate Basketball Showcase. The game had been slated for a 2:30 p.m. tip in Fort Worth, Texas. Neither that game or the one against the Crimson Tide (8-2) will be made up this season.
