"Amazing what a minute can do."
Wow. Interesting timing. Very odd. And he apparently is being replaced on an interim basis by former teammate Danny Manning, who is an assistant coach there (I had no idea).

Edit: kudos to Wilson and KidA for beating me to the Manning news
Wow…given the timing it almost seems like they hired Manning (in April 2021) with a specific plan to do this. The real question might be why they waited so long. To give Turgeon one last chance to prove himself in the pre-season? To convince themselves that Manning’s failure at Wake had nothing to do with his coaching ability? Truly strange, all around.
ha, in April they extended his contract thru the 2025-6 season, D'oh! Very odd timing indeed.
I am starting to think there may be more to the story…
Maryand's move to the big 10. Never has a team been paid more to matter less.
....oh hey there Texas!

Maryland, I don’t know about UCLA of the east, maybe wicked witch of the west.
Yes it is weird.
He’s been there 10 years.
His contract was renewed last spring, with a nice extension and raise (also when Manning was hired as asst coach).
His contract includes a pretty big termination payout.
Now they are having a “mutual parting” very, very early in season after 3 losses.
It makes no sense. Either he is having an awakening similar to that Urban Meyer had when he didn’t want to coach anymore (before he DID want to coach again), or something else (bad) happened and just hasn’t been publicized. It is just too strange.
Edit: apparently when he got his contract extension, it included a decrease in his termination payout…hmmmm. John Feinstein says that Turgeon was never really happy in MD, and that the well-mannered, respectful MD fans (my words, not his, ha ha ha) never liked him either.

The Maryland fans that I know are quite happy with the move to the big 10. They get way more football money for the school.
I wonder if they’ll go after Nate James? He’s from that area.
Too many Maryland fans still have nightmares about Nate's legendary putback at the ACC Tourney:
