The hoariest of football cliches is that games are won by teams that tackle and block better than their opponents.
Duke does not perform either of these basics at an acceptable level.

I just checked Gamecast, is it accurate that we have ONE rushing yard in this game? Can that possibly be correct?
Another killer penalty.
Another penalty, but probably the right play because he was totally beat (to be fair, I think he was coming over to help the guy who got beat).
Our backs get beaten more than any other team though. There has to be a point where they look back at the ball sometime— they could break up/intercept more passes.
And speaking of maddening (or maybe just annoying)… does the Miami QB Van Duke have to pretend he is passing with full arm swing EVERY TIME he hands the ball off?!!
Duke doesn't seem to have a quarterback who can hit an open receiver, which is not exactly what we expected at the beginning of Cut's tenure.
And it's not like they're missing on deep shots downfield.
When Duke got good, the single biggest improvement to me was in tackling. Guys like Jeremy Cash, Kelby Brown, DeVon Edwards, Kenny Anunike, Joe Giles-Harris, Ben Humphries, Ross Cockrell, et. al. simply did not miss tackles with any regularity.
The slippage in this area has been stunning. This is one area where Cut's defenses are pretty darn close to what we saw under Franks and Roof. Bad angles, arm tackling, tackling at the shoulders rather than the hips, name a tackling mistake and Duke makes it.
