Moore also had a great game, was perfect from the field through the first half and made clutch plays throughout. Did have 3 turnovers and he really needs to be used more off the ball rather than as a primary creator but he showed great leadership in coming through when the team needed it.

AJ showed up with some big defensive plays during that stretch where both Moore and Paolo were out. Lots to love about this game and this team.
Keels’ strength is gonna get him buckets, but I don’t think he’s gonna get a ton of whistles on drives because contact doesn’t seem to bother his body control and I think refs look for if the contact impacts the play more than they should.

    His defense was great, too.

I think Banchero and Keels have a toughness or some "real dawg" in them that I haven't sensed in some of our recent star freshmen. I don't want to over react to one game but those dudes feel different in the right kind of way when you are chasing banners.

Really great start to the season. Had control of the game almost the entire way despite dreadful 3pt shooting and good 3pt shooting by UK.

Banchero and Moore set the pace in the first half and then Keels dominated the second on offense. Duke went up 15 riding Keels but then cramping and maybe some complacency let UK back in. Nice to see the team weather the run and take control back.

Also good minutes from Theo John when Coach K was seemingly upset with Williams, and nice to see Griffin get feel for the game and give good minutes.

Defense was pretty good for the first game of the season. And I also like the edge the team played with, particularly John and Keels who played bully ball at times.

Cramping was a bummer and took away some of the flow. Looks like Moore had a bandage on his right elbow - did he get IV fluids in the locker room?

Also an early start for the Bilas haters - Washington shoved Keels with his off hand on that play!

According to Bilas, taking a forearm to the face on a drive is an obvious blocking call.

And Griffin was in during that big run doing all the little things. Joey didn’t really do much but his defensive effort was improved and he was also in during the run.
After seeing him in person twice on East Campus and reading about him, I had a suspicion Trevor Keels was going to blow our minds.Solid as a ROCK, that is Trevor Keels. First sighting Banchero was with him at Lilly Library on East Campus.

And there is obvious room for improvement -- as in 7.7 percent on 3-point shots -- 1 for 13.

I wonder if Joey Baker will ever be the great 3 point shooter he was advertised. I really doubt it, but it would add another dimension to get a 3 point specialist like Grady on Kentucky. Moore,Banchero and Keels can stroke it, but I wish Joey would knock some down.

That’s a solid win, especially with three of our stars cramping.

Two glaring issues for me. We couldn’t keep big T off the glass with our talented front line. But he may be the best rebounder we face all year. And we only had 7 assists. I think that was a combination of us playing a little fast and forcing things, but also UK playing tight man to man without a lot of help daring us to drive to the rim - which we did pretty well.

On the unexpected side, Keels is a much better defender than I expected. He’s not a liability on D at all. When AJ is fully healthy this team is going to be a real force defensively.

    Great start to the season.

Great win. With this being the first game and all, there really isn’t anything for me to analyze. Just good to see the team out there and coke away with a win.

Charlie Sheen was at the game tonight?!?

    This team is special...full stop.

Shot 8% from three and were out rebounded by 8 and still won relatively comfortably. And from the eyeball test we were clearly the better team talent wise. Kentucky was fortunate to shoot 40% from three and have some offensive rebounds bounce their way otherwise it would have been shades of 2018.

Starting every season 1-0 is just what the doctor ordered. When that win is over Kentucky at the Garden, it’s that much sweeter. I was happy Griffin got to play and the injuries to Banchero Keels and Moore were just cramps. They’ll hopefully be better hydrated for games the rest of the season. Thank God they are ok. I was getting a bit concerned. Keels and Banchero are grown men. Hard to believe they’re teenagers. Keels is 18 and Banchero turns 19 on Friday. They may not be drinking lots of fluids, but my goodness, they appear to be eating fine. Doesn’t look like either miss many meals. Keels’s shoulders appear about two ax handles wide. Moore was smooth. Roach had a few good finishes at the rim. The team rebounding looked much better in the 2nd half compared to the first. Theo John looks like a great, strong addition. He actually squared up from 3 a couple times where I thought he was going to shoot from deep. Can he shoot 3s? Big Mark continues to improve. Man he blocks and alters just about everything around the rim.

    On to Army.

    Let’s Go Duke!

We chatted up Brad Stevens after the game while looking for a cab. He said, unprompted, "Keels is a beast."
Nothing incites bodily violence quicker than a Duke fan turning in your direction and saying 'scoreboard.'

That is what Patrick Baldwin would have been on this team, although he is more than just a 3 point specialist. Saw some footage of him last week, and he has such a sweet stroke and was knocking it down from NBA range with ease.

But I love this team. Lots to love about the game tonight, with plenty to work on as well.

    Awesome Win!!

    Early thoughts:

    - I love that we were able to get the win comfortably despite only 1 made three. You want to shoot better than that obviously, but we found plenty of other ways to win the game.

    - We can defend the hell out of the ball. Wheeler carved us up a little bit in the pick and roll, but we also forced him into 7 turnovers and completely shut down the rest of their perimeter players in the 2nd half. This team has elite potential on defense.

    - Getting to the free throw line that many times is huge. It seems like we can basically get free throws whenever we want.

    - Keels was unbelievable, he's like a fire hydrant. No one can move him off his spot. The way he played tonight reminded me of James Harden at times, with how easy it was for him to get in the paint and finish through contact. He's going be moving into the 2022 lottery on most mock drafts shortly.

    - Paolo was great, dominating the game even on one leg for the 2nd half. Did they have an extra salty meal before the game or something? Jeez.

    - It's pretty freakin cool that we have 4 guys on the floor in the starting lineup who can all bring the ball up the court. Our transition offense is going to be special.

    - Paolo, Trevor, and Wendell is a legit big 3. Three guys who are all mismatches at their respective position who can handle and make plays. That's gonna be difficult to stop.

    - Tshiebwe destroyed us on the offensive glass, but I don't even blame our bigs all that much. Oscar was just on fire. Mark has to learn to put a body on his man instead of just going straight up for the board every time, but I thought he and Theo both battled hard and Tshiebwe was was just channeling Dennis Rodman out there.

Fun game. Love that Keels wants it so bad. We need to stop drives and stick with outside shooters better, as well as strong hands inside. But I am thrilled to get the win. Paolo is smooth and they were clearly very focused on him.

Fun crowd at MSG. The whole evening felt like a major event. The crowd definitely leaned Duke, though us leading for 98% of the game probably helped.

Lots of eye rolling from the other fans at the K love fest and K also didn’t seem to want to be out there for his presentation - not his style. I think he is going to ask them to tone down these events.
