Mort Sahl died last week at 94

Just found this out, can't believe there wasn't more media about his death. It certainly deserves mention on this board (especially since we all consider ourselves quite witty).

Mort Sahl was a comedic icon, a pioneer. If you're not familiar, please read this article to gain an appreciation for him and his talent.

Other, similar comedians and satirists would soon emerge from similar scenes with their own forms of rebellion—Lenny Bruce, Jonathan Winters, Tom Lehrer—but Sahl was the first, the tone-setter, and the most enduringly influential. Without him, it is hard to imagine the likes of Woody Allen, George Carlin, Richard Pryor, Chris Rock, or Dave Chappelle.

He would have got a lot more press if he had died when was 74 instead of 94. Sad but true.
I agree with you that the man was a legend. RIP.

Sounds like a good trade off: two extra decades of living, not as many headlines when you're done.

    Oh, I completely agree.

I was just pointing out that ageism is alive and well in this country, and that it is very easily possible to outlive other people's fond memories.

I think this is not so much ageism as that fame is fleeting.

As I get older, 15 minutes doesn't even last as long as it used to!

Definitely a lot of fleeting fame, but ageism is the real deal, too. Sadly, it is hard to find people who care about anybody who is over 90. It is almost as if once you are that age you are expendable.
