So I watched this and thought “Wow, McGregor is going to get sued for this! WTH? How did I never see this before? This is crazy!”
Turns out it is actually video of a woman getting smacked in the face by an elephant, and someone edited the elephant out and put in McGregor.
Listen, people already believe absolutely ridiculous stuff, like that the moon landing was faked and Elvis is still alive. Nowadays, thanks to the Internet, they are believing ridiculous stuff, en masse, that is seriously dangerous, like that covid is fake or that Donald Trump actually won the last presidential election.
But holy cow, once these start becoming more common, and once foreign governments and domestic actors get involved… we are doomed. There is no way anyone will actually look into whether or not what they are watching is real if it lines up with what they want to believe, and with the speed of the Internet… oh man.
I am seriously unnerved.
We’re going to need an org to start certifying video chain of custody, asserting footage is unaltered.
Sort of how orgs sprang up to certify that e-commerce sites were legit.

I don’t disagree but it’ll only work for people already inclined to trust institutions. Wasn’t there a deep fake video of Pelosi in the last cycle made to look like she had a stroke? The confirmation bias will only become more acute when you literally see proof of what you believe anyway.
Even the most skeptical and diligent will have a hard time methinks.
The controls required to contain this kind of thing step is closer to Orwell 1984.
‘Reality exists in the human mind, and nowhere else.’
Yeah, these Tom Cruise deepfake videos on TikTok have gotten a lot of play and they're pretty darn realistic (much clearer/higher quality than the McGregor one):
The even more unfortunate element of this, is that it is happening to coincide with a huge distrust of media. What will even count as "evidence" anymore? What should, really?
.
That last sentence is the issue. It's not that the most skeptical and diligent will have a hard time, it's that all the others don't and are along for the ride. What we will need is more and more people to have what you are describing as a hard time. We need for the less skeptical to be fed more truthful data without them realizing. Many of them really and truly don't understand how much they have let themselves be manipulated. The last 6 years has really shown us how disinformation online and misinformation can sway too many people. Straight up nonsensical things repeated over and over get treated as real or true. It's scary.
Deep Fake - Isn't this basically the same as saying, "Folks can now create Hollywood level CGI on their own".
Yeah, this is going too far! (t-shirt)

The horses have left the barn. Going to have to rely on 3rd party verification, watermarking, hash functions, or (obligatory) blockchain. I don't think even Robin Lopez has enough time to research every questionable video that comes down the pike.
And if you think this has important political ramifications, potentially, just think of the "Did you see THAT?" thread.
It will also create problems in the opposite direction - real videos will be quickly dismissed as deep fakes. For example law enforcement had some great successes at bringing down the most well connected criminals because they ‘caught them on tape.’ The evidence was undeniable- until now. Soon all real vids will be doubted.
