Lively's cousin is a Duke football commit

Lively's mom tweeted yesterday that his cousin Brian Parker II committed to Duke football. Very cool.

Nice! Chose Duke over Louisville, Pitt, and Air Force. Pretty cool, both II's too (instead of Jr's...) although don't see that much resemblance.

Find a picture of Dereck's mom online and the relationship makes a lot more sense. Welcome to Duke, Brian!

Nice! Though I wish they would correctly use “a part” rather than “apart.” I don’t want them to be apart of the Duke program.

Dereck Lively and Westtown were at the Hoophall Classic on Friday night. They went up against one of the top players in the Class of 2023, Mikey Williams, and NC's Vertical Academy. Lively had a slow start but finished with a very impressive performance, 22 pts, 20 reb, and 6 blks. He was 10-14 from the floor and 1-2 on 3-pt FG attempts. This was a special performance.

Westtown will be in action again on Sunday evening on ESPN2 for those that want to check it out.

    Full highlights below.

Just as he did for Dariq Whitehead a few weeks ago, Adam Spinella released a preseason scouting report video for Dereck Lively today:

"Here's where the real unicorn-y stuff starts to come in. It's not just the shooting ability. It's not just the upside to be a great rim protector. It's all of that in combination with a success that he's already shown in switching on the guards. His strength and his size is going to allow him to play either the 4 or the 5 at the NBA level -- he's probably best served being a 5. But in late clock situations or by design by his coaching staff, he has already shown comfort in switching onto smaller guys, contesting jump shots on the perimeter, funneling them to an area where he can absolutely demolish their shot, and making sure he does so all without fouling."

Spinella makes these videos with the 2023 NBA Draft in mind, but it doubles as a preview for his freshman season.

Seems like there are a lot of unicorns now. Is a unicorn a big man who can shoot 3’s and block shots? Is that really unique?

One something stops being unique it starts being necessary.

Side note: This is why I'm not worried about Kyle on D. He can guard slower guys. DL can guard a lot of PFs and some SFs. Whichever of the opposing team's bigs are less dangerous can be guarded by Kyle while DL guards the other team's more dangerous player.

He also has to be able to switch onto perimeter players and shut them down.

He’s a common unicorn, not a rare unicorn. In other words, he’s unique but not very unique.

How can one be both unique and not very unique?

    Uniquely?

That’s a pretty exciting breakdown of his game. I expect he and Flip will both stretch the D and take their fair share of 3s. Can they consistently connect on 33-35%? If so, watch out!

To misquote an old scout, “there’s a uniquely beautiful girl on every street corner in America, but a 7 footer who can shoot 3’s and run the court? That’s hard to find.”

We can quibble about definitions, but if unique can be liberalized to mean “one in a million,” Duke’s been recruiting unique players every year since before the freshmen were born. Most colleges have had none during that time.

I guess it is safe to say the each player is unique in his or her's own unique way?
