Jack White returned from the injury that ended his last season and quickly became a key player for Melbourne United again in his second season with the team, although they were upset in the playoffs after being the top team in the regular season. good find. I think JJ is great, but Cousy has a point (pun)...I doubt JJ ever got to see Cousy play...yeah, the athleticism now is a whole lot better, but those guys weren't the stiffs JJ seems to think they were.

In the draft that Cousy was selected in, the guy who was picked sixth chose to skip the NBA and become a dentist instead. At the time Cousy was drafted, there were zero black NBA players.

Obviously, JJ's comment was a snarky exaggeration and I get why Cousy or other players from that time would take offense, but the spirit of what JJ was getting at was dead on (nothing against dentists!).

Depends on their pain-management skills. Fewer things in my experience are worse than a dentist who didn't use enough novocaine during a root-canal.

There's another side to this question. Players from Cousy's generation didn't have access to anything resembling today's training infrastructure, everything from weight training, to physical therapists to nutritionists to sports psychologists.

And there were only eight teams in the NBA during most of Cousy's career. The 90th best player in the league was an end-of-the-bench scrub. The 90th best player in today's NBA is a starter on a playoff team.

And there were Black players in the NBA during most of his tenure. Not anywhere enough, to be sure. Donald Sterling wasn't the first racist NBA owner. But the Celtics had great Black players like Bill Russell, Sam Jones, K.C. Jones and Satch Sanders while ACC hoops was totally segregated and by all indications Cousy was welcoming and supportive to those pioneers. And he competed against Wilt Chamberlain and Elgin Baylor and Oscar Robertson and Hal Greer and Walt Bellamy and Chet Walker and others.

And those Converse All-Stars weren't a wry, hipster statement. They were state of the art.

The NBA was small change when Cousy started. By the time he left it was a much stronger league, expanding and getting more media exposure, with better salaries and he deserves a lot of credit for that. I wonder if J.J. knows what Cousy helped start the NBA Player's Union and was its first president and spent a pretty large chunk of his time and energy making sure NBA players didn't have to be dentists.

Roger Kahn's The Boys of Summer is one of the best baseball books every written. It's about those great Brooklyn Dodgers teams in the late 1940s and 1950s until they moved to L.A.

Some of the best baseball players of all time. Most of them had off-season jobs. Carl Furillo ran a deli. Jackie Robinson sold TVs. Would it be accurate to dismiss Warren Spahn for pitching against "deli owners and TV salesmen?"

Bob Cousy was absolutely critical in establishing and growing the NBA Player's Union against fierce ownership opposition. Maybe Redick should spend some of that valuable ESPN airtime thanking him for that.
