Yes. College basketball preseason polls are harmless. The football polls unfairly offer certain teams a head start towards the playoff.

It isn't as bad as when they just voted for the winner, but it's similar.
Absolutely agree, which is why they need to expand the CFB playoff. 12 teams would be a step in the right direction, but I prefer the way the FCS schools do it, with 16. The old way quite simply sucked—separate polls each selecting 'champions' from among a pool of teams who often hadn't ever played one another... split polls... long term agreements between bowls and conferences that often prevented teams with the best records in a given year from actually playing one another for all the marbles...

    USC Fires Clay Helton

I would guess first head to roll this season.

After a disaster at home against Stanford Clay Helton is out at USC. AD Mike Bohn had said this was not a make or break year for Helton then fired him after two games.

Helton is reported to be a very fine man. Many of his former players seem to care for him. He did not get the job done.

Helton should be (a very fine man) since he started coaching as a Graduate Assitant for Duke Football under Fred Goldsmith in 1995. He looks a bit like Chip Kelly, but that's probably where the resemblance ends.

Maybe he’d be interested in coming back.

    More on Philyaw-Johnson

From ESPN's article about Jacksonville State's upset of FSU. https://www.espn.com/college-footbal...-florida-state

Next to get handed the phone was Philyaw-Johnson, who played his part of that miracle by catching Cooper's pass and running the remaining 20 yards to pay dirt thanks to a key block from teammate Ahmad Edwards. Duke fans will remember Philyaw-Johnson as their former receiver/return specialist. After graduating, he entered the transfer portal. Coincidentally, the school he wanted to go to coming out of high school and then again after getting his degree was Florida State, but it never showed serious interest.

Philyaw-Johnson chose to go to Jacksonville partly because it was close to his home in Pensacola. His mom, a hotel housekeeper, had never been able to see him play a college game in person before Saturday night. The 11-hour drive to Duke was too far and money was always too tight. But she was there in Tallahassee, crying as her son became the hero of the night and earned a measure of vindication against the team he rooted for since he was a child.
"I felt like I had to prove something to myself and them as far as why they should have taken me," he said.

A definite “good guy” with a 46-24 record including two double digit win years and a Rose Bowl victory? One could do worse …

His best and highest use is as an offensive coordinator. We could use some help.

Kick return fake that wasn't a fake results in an easy TD

Why are you wasting time here when you could be wasting it by listening to the latest episode of the DBR Podcast?

Nice piece on Derrick (Congo) Tangelo from a Penn State site:

    https://bwi.rivals.com/news/why-do-p...tangelo-congo-

The 6-foot-2, 308-pound graduate senior who transferred in from Duke earlier this year has quickly built a bond with his teammates and won a starting job despite being on campus for just a handful of months. Some wondered if he'd be ready for such a role, and so far, the Maryland native has been up to the task with five tackles and a fumble recovery throughout a 3-0 start, and others were curious why he has the nickname that he does...

"Penn State's always been a dream school of mine," Tangelo said. "I felt like leaving Duke would give me more exposure. I just felt I needed a fresh start. I feel like I had a great time at Duke and I accomplished a lot of things but I felt like there was more for me to do."

And it didn't take long for both sides to realize the best place for him to do that was in State College.

"I really loved my teammates at Duke," Tangelo said. "I love Duke in general, being there for years, but I just felt like I needed to change, so when I hit the portal. It was actually interesting. I didn't really get a lot of buzz at first, and then as soon as I saw Penn State state, I was like, yeah I'm talking to Penn State.

    Well, that was thoroughly depressing.

I completely understand why he’d transfer to a high profile school and he’s made the most of his opportunity. I expect to see more transfers away from Duke football as the enthusiasm for our program has waned.

Watching parts of Penn State games and then seeing photos of our empty stadium provides amazing contrast.

Think about the exact opposite happening for basketball. For example, Lively's mother was a superstar basketball player at Penn State and now works there, and he is now going to Duke. I'm sure the Penn State basketball fans of the world were not happy (and to those who say "what Penn State basketball fans", I'm sure Penn State fans say the same thing about Duke football fans). We win some, we lose some. Obviously I wish Duke football was more of a destination, but I will appreciate what we do have.

Sure, I was a freshman and attended that game, which was played on January 3, 1967. Bubas had suspended 9 players for violating curfew after they were caught attending New Year's Eve parties. I believe Verga was the only starter who played. Notably, C.B. Claiborne got his first start in that game. It was rumored around campus that (a) Verga avoided suspension only because he spent New Year's Eve partying privately with his girlfriend; and (b) Bubas arranged for Bob Matheson to sit behind the Duke bench, prepared to suit up at halftime if needed because of injury or foul trouble. One of the funniest things I ever saw in the Indoor Stadium was when Duke trotted out for the pregame warmup drill, with only 3 or 4 players on each side of the layup line.
