    Jerry Harkness, RIP

    https://www.chicagotribune.com/sport...rsy-story.html

The leading scorer for Loyola's 1963 NCAA champions. There's a Duke connection. This was the season Duke made its first Final Four. Duke went into Louisville on a 20-game winning streak but couldn't handle Harkness and Loyola. Harkness scored 20 points against Duke. Loyola beat Cincinnati in overtime the next night for the title, while Duke beat Oregon State for third place.

Loyola and Cincinnati started seven Black players combined. Duke and Oregon State started zero. The times they were a changing.

He was. An unusual honor for a player from the third-place team. In 1966 Utah's Jerry Chambers was named MOP and his team lost twice.

I suspect Harkness was perfectly happy with that NCAA title.
