Nice win over a ranked team, 3-1 final. Great news about Delaney.

Thanks for the updates on both men’s amd womens soccer. I came to Duke in 1982 and those were the glory days for Duke mens soccer. I used to go to all the games under Rennie, and knew him a bit. Those were the days of so many stars and Hermann award winners like Tommy Kain* (51 goals and 40+ assists), Mike Jeffries*, Joey Ulrich* (sweeper with heart of a lion), Jason Kreis (hardest worker and most powerful free kick in college soccer), Mike Grella, Ken Lolla*, Jay Heaps, and yes John Kerr* (whose father had been an English pro and taught him exquisite ball control - I loved watched him break defenders ankles). Unfortunately I missed Ali Curtis* who in 2000 finally broke Kain’s goals record with 53 goals (but just 28 assists, so Kain still #1 player in my mind.)

*Hermann Award was award for best player in college soccer. Early 80’s was truly a Duke heyday - Rennie recruits Ulrich, Jeffries, Kain and Kerr won 4 of the 5 Hermann Awards given from 1982-1986.

I was there the same time. The crowds were awesome. Remind me, wasn't Kerr a year behinf Kain and we called him "WonderBoy"? The years have dulled my memory. I remember one of our guys who could cover amazing distance with his throw ins. In a game against Clemson it became a big deal because their guy did a front flip to throw it in.

My freshman year was the year Duke won its first NCAA title in any sport: men's soccer
What a team that was: John Kerr, Tom Stone, Kelly Weadock, Everett Harper, Bob Probst, Troy Erickson, Mark Dodd, Brian Benedict, Joey Valenti, Jason Weighter, Carl Williamson, Mike Linenberger, Mike Clifford...that was a team

I'm 10+ years behind you but I spent many hours in the Rat looking at the imprint on the wall of The Chronicle front page from that win - "Duke 1, Akron Zip." Very clever. Men's soccer came close again in 1995 (I was at the games in the freezing cold in Richmond), upsetting I believe 4-time defending champs UVA in the semis before losing to Wisconsin in the final. That Duke team was led by freshman Jay Heaps and junior Brian Kelly.

We sure deserved it, having lost to Indiana in eight (8) overtimes in 1982..absolutely brutal.

I remember listening to that game on the radio in the Phi Kap section because it was not on TV. (Ah, infant cable television). I’m the year ahead of you apparently.

‘86 had my favorite MBB team and a really fun men’s soccer team. IIRC, though, the athlete of the year per the Chanticleer was Chris Moreland from the women’s basketball team.

A great time to be on campus!

Also John Hardwick, a good friend of mine who lived next door to me in House CC senior year. Mike Buckmire, also a House CC resident at the time, was a reserve on the team and the father of Michael Buckmire from our recent basketball teams.

According to wikipedia, the 8 OT game was equaled three years later when UCLA beat American U. In 1989, Santa Clara and UVA went 4 OTs without a winner, with both teams being declared co-champions. Then, in 1990, penalty kicks started being the determining factor (in that case, after 4 OTs); later on, the 4 OT limit was reduced to 2.

Each of those methods of determining a single-game victor in soccer has its issues, and mars what is otherwise an elegant sport.

Thanks. That headline is better than the one I remembered, though I was close! When we were at the finals in 1995, we joked that if we won, that Chronicle cover would also end up on the wall of the Rat. I guess we jinxed it.

The headline below the soccer one is the annual Chronicle "sun rises in the east" fill in the blanks article - "Trustees raise tuition" - if I am reading it correctly, tuition was just under $10,000.

The reason I fell in love with Duke and eventually attended Fuqua was because Michael Linenberger coached my youth soccer team while in high school. Three of us went to the Duke soccer camp the summer after the national championship to see Michael. Tommy Stone, who I believe scored the championship goal against Akron, was our counselor (we are all from the Dallas area). I loved the campus and getting to stay in the dorms and eat in the cafeteria. It literally changed my life…

I still have my championship T-shirt from that 86 championship. Great memories.

Stone's father built the University Tower on 15-501.

Our throw-in specialist was David McDaniel. And he didn’t need to do a front-flip.

My female neighbor, years ago when I lived off Pickett Rd, coined a non-complimentary alternative title for that tower shortly after it was erected.

The Men's game vs. NC State is in a weather delay after 19 minutes with no score. I do not see any streaming video coverage... just the Live Stats and Twitter.

It appears the game was suspended and a new scrimmage will be played tomorrow per NC State Twitter
