    Sixers at #50

Yikes. I guess I shouldn’t have given away my strategy in the write-up for the 28th pick as the next 3 centers on my draft board were all taken right above this pick. I still need a backup big that can contribute at least some right away, so with the 50th pick in the 2021 DBR Mock NBA Draft, the Philadelphia 76ers select Sandro Mamukelashvili from Seton Hall.

Mamukelashvili has a lot of offensive skills including good passing and the ability to run on the break. He was Big East Player of the Year in 2021. While his 3pt percentage dropped from 43% to 34% last year, he improved his percentage from the free throw line--our team shooting advisors assure me he’ll be able to shoot well enough in our 5-out sets to keep the lane open so that Ben Simmons can operate more freely whenever they are together on the court.

There are questions about Mamukelashvili’s ability to guard NBA centers, but I need at least some shooting from the center position since my 6-10 point-guard absolutely refuses to take a jump shot (did I mention that I’m looking for a trade?). That ruled out some better defenders that are still left at 50. Luka Garza also would have been a good fit here.

Sandro also impressed us in interviews at the combine. He is a smart guy (All Academic Big East) and mature (22 years old), so hopefully will be able to adjust to the league more easily.

Welcome to Philadelphia, Sandro…don’t forget to pick-up Dwight Howard’s bags as you make your way to the team bus.
Good people drink good beer. -Hunter S. Thompson

    Memphis Grizzlies 51st Pick

The Grizz choose Sam Hauser out of Marquette/ UVA!
Great shooter, limited defensively. I wanted to choose Matthew Hurt but he was already taken!

At pick 52 the Pistons still need shooting. Shooting, shooting, shooting. Since there’s the potential for early PT, I also think the Pistons could go for someone with more experience.

So, they select Ohio State’s Duane Washington. HA. Take that everyone’s who says I’m too much of a Michigan homer! Yes I almost picked Chaundee Brown instead BUT I DIDN’T.

Picking for the sixth time in the draft, here late in the second round, we're not thinking about immediate addition to the roster, and instead hoping we can find someone who may be willing to be stashed overseas for a season or two. So our focus for this pick has been exclusively on overseas players. There are a few guys mocked in this general vicinity, but we're going to go with a Belgian wing who can stretch the floor:

    Vrenz Bleijenbergh, F, Antwerp
Just be you. You is enough. - K, 4/5/10, 0:13.8 to play, 60-59 Duke.

You're all jealous hypocrites. - Titus on Laettner

You see those guys? Animals. They're animals. - SIU Coach Chris Lowery, on Duke

With the 56th pick in the DBR Mock Drafts, the Charlotte Hornets select Greg Brown, F, Texas.

It is borderline absurd that Brown is still on the board at this point. I've seen plenty of mocks that had him in the first round. I mentioned him back at pick #48 so I don't need to say much more here. He's a super high energy player who is not yet polished but I can see him being truly impactful after a season or two in the G-League with professional training.

With the 57th pick in the DBR Mock Draft, the Charlotte Hornets select RaiQuan Grey, F, Florida State.

I love this dude. He's not the greatest run-jump athlete but he's a super hard worker and has nice skills. He's a rock solid defender and not unskilled with the ball in his hands. I could see him becoming a small-ball NBA center, sorta a poor man's Draymond Green. He needs to get better at rebounding, but I've seen him improve every season at Florida State so I have no doubt he can continue to build and become a better player. Despite this being the end of the 2nd round, I think RaiQuan Grey is a guy who will be in a NBA rotation -- perhaps back end of that rotation -- for many years.

End of the 2nd round is a place to take a swing - me/Knicks were looking at Bassey as a big and shooters Hauser and Hurt. With them gone we're going out on a limb - with #58 the Knicks take - EJ Onu, F/C, Shawnee State (NAIA) | Senior

    Height: 6' 11" | Weight: 240 | Age: 21

"While Onu’s path to the pros has been unorthodox, the pathway for him to sticking in the league is pretty simple. He has legit size for a center, shot 40% from three on 130 attempts as a senior and averaged 16.9 points, eight rebounds and 4.5 blocks in 33 games. Granted, this was playing at the NAIA level, where he was an All-America at Shawnee State in Ohio and led his team to a national championship last season. He’s due for a major uptick in competition this fall, whether he opts to return to college as a grad transfer or make the leap to the pros. But on tape, there’s a clear level of intrigue with Onu, thanks to a translatable skill set and his late-blooming development curve. It was enough to earn him an invite to G League Elite Camp, where he’ll have a big platform to prove he belongs."

"During a workout at a team’s facility this month, Onu measured at 6' 10" barefoot with a massive 7' 8" wingspan, metrics that will play up at any level of basketball. Despite a massive high-school growth spurt, he remained under the radar, and he chose to stay put when some Division I programs came calling the past few years. And he totaled a whopping 529 career blocks in four seasons."

With that wingspan and ability to block shots he should progress enough on D to earn playing time.

No way the Knicks keep 4 rookies on the roster. I can see them packaging their first three picks and try and move up.

With my final, and the Brooklyn Nets final pick in this year's draft, I want to honor a kid who was a huge thorn in Duke's side during the conference season. I gave huge consideration to Tech's Moses Wright, the ACC player of the year and interesting story of a kid who was more into swimming and tennis before picking up basketball relatively late. I hope someone in the NBA gives him a chance and I think they will.

Instead, I am going with a dude who owned Duke this year, save for the last game of the year when we finally figured him out and it helped us end the season with a W. This kid played 3 years at Radford but had a redshirt, which allowed him to transfer as a graduated senior with one year of eligibility. He went to Louisville, stepped into the starting line-up, and became a first team All ACC performer. I couldn't understand how this little thick fire plug kept getting to the rim and scoring on us, he drove me crazy, and I admired the heck out of him. Every year, the Athletic's and Duke's Seth Davis polls NBA scouts about draft prospects and combines their comments into an amalgamated scout he calls "Finch". Here's Finch's lead on my pick:

"He's got some challenges in front of him, but he's tough sh*t..."

What more needs to be said, with the 59th pick in the 2021 DBR Mock NBA Draft, the Brooklyn Nets select Carlik Jones, PG out of Louisville.

Pick 54: Aaron Henry, F, Michigan St

With toughness, defense, athleticism and a 6’10” wingspan from the SG/SF position, Aaron Henry fits in well with what the Indiana Pacers are looking to accomplish. He may not be a great outside shooter, but has a midrange game that reminds some of Khris Middleton. Some teams were looking at him for a late first round pick, so we were happy he fell to us.

Pick 60: Aaron Wiggins, F, Maryland

With Wiggins, we’re doubling down on Aarons and 6’5”-6’6” wing players with 6’10” wingspans.

Brings similar defense as Aaron Henry, but is a bit more versatile as a scorer. Showed up well for the summer leagues, so we like the low risk/high reward potential here.

Just looking back at my draft last year and surprised that my first round pick of the Illinois guard would have ended up well with him making 2nd team ALl Rookie
