    Degenerate Golfers: 2022 Open Championship

It's British Open Championship week at historic St. Andrews Links! After a great week at the Scottish Open, the golf world heads 80 miles north to the Old Course for the 150th edition of the Open Championship. Amazing non-LIV storylines abound, such as Tiger's return to the Old Course, the white-hot Xander Schauffele coning off wins in back-to-back starts (plus the JP McManus pro am), Morikawa's quest to repeat, the chance that scores may be in the 50s if the wind is down, the potential final Open for Sergio, Poulter, Westwood, et al (sorry, had to get one LIV story in there), and most importantly, the drama surrounding who will win our contest.

    Contest rules are as follows:

    1. Select a team of as many golfers as the "salary cap" allows.
    2. The salary cap is 30 points - use them wisely!
    3. Each player's "cost" against the salary cap is their OWGR points total rounded down. So, Scottie Scheffler "costs" 10, Rory 7, Rahm 7,etc.
    4. Anyone whose OWGR points is less than 2, costs 2. In other words, no player in the field costs less than 2.
    5. You can pick any player in the field - it's not a draft, so in theory you could have the exact same team as someone else.
    6. Your final score is based on the total money won by all the players on your team. If one of your players misses the cut, you get $0 for that player.
    7. As a tiebreaker, you also pick the winning score relative to par (e.g., -12).

Finally, since we live in a world where the men's golf major championship season ends in July, this is the last week of our 2022 Majors contest. Year-to-date standings are below, where we have around 12 contestants who have a reasonable shot at taking home the season long title (I am not among them; I suck at both this contest and manipulating my stats to make them better).

Once again, mkirsh - you are awesome! Thank you so much for doing this. It is a huge treat for many of us including myself. Good luck to all! We are in for some great golf from The Old Course at St. Andrews - the home of golf! Looking forward to this year’s The Open Championship!

I think Rasputin thinks it will be windy this week at The Old Course and it will be virtually impossible to get into red numbers on!

The pressure is on Team Evans... just a very doable $1.7 mil out of first but also less than a million away from falling into 4th (win, place, or show... you get nada for 4th).

The fact that first place Rogue has already picked his team gives me an advantage. The reality is that unless I really, really love a certain player, I probably need to pick exclusively different players from Rogue to have much of a shot at winning this thing. So, my first instinct is to take Rory, Xander, Matt Fitz, and Justin Thomas off the table. But, everyone who knows this stuff much better than me says Xander is the favorite... or maybe it is Rory. Ugh!

So, without any further ado, this is Team Evans. The club that will absolutely bring it home for me... I think.

    Patrick Cantlay 7
    Cameron Smith 6
    Jordan Spieth 5
    Will Zalatoris 5
    Shane Lowry 3
    Justin Rose 2
    Ryan Fox 2

    Winning score: minus 14

Struggling with this one. Everyone is so high on Rory and Xander I feel like there is no way they can win with all that pressure, but I really like the way they are playing (plus I want to root for those guys). So here is my team, though I may change my mind later.

Rory "I'm soooo overdue for a Major" McIlroy - 7
Xander "Don't tell Pat Riley I'm going for the 'three-peat'" Shauffele - 7
Cam "I just shot 3 rounds in the 60s last week but no one is talking about me" Smith - 6
Will "apparently my Wake teammates all hated me" Zalatoris - 5
Max "haven't missed a cut since Feb" Homa - 3
Tommy "Fairway Jesus" Fleetwood - 2

    Winning score: -18

I did not know Zalatoris’s teammates at Wake didn’t like him! He sort of resembles the caddie in Happy Gilmore to me!

You are not alone - he apparently has "Mr Gilmore I'm your caddy" stamped on one of his wedges.
