With the caveat that these are mostly educated guesses, a draft like this would really encourage guys to come back for a 2nd year to work hard & improve their draft position while leading Duke deep into the postseason.

Krysten Peek, who did a way-too-early version all the way back on April 10, offers her first official 2024 mock of #1-30. She's got two returning Duke players and one Duke freshman, plus former Wake player Bobi Klintman and Louisville freshman Trentyn Flowers.

Yahoo! Sports: 2024 NBA Mock Draft 1.0: All eyes on USC and Bronny James next year

    1. G/F Matas Buzelis | Ht./Wt.: 6-11, 190 pounds | G League Ignite
    2. G/F Zaccharie Risacher | Ht./Wt.: 6-9, 200 pounds | France
    3. G/F Ron Holland | Ht./Wt.: 6-7, 195 pounds | Class: Freshman | G League Ignite
    4. G/F Cody Williams | Ht./Wt.: 6-8, 180 pounds | Class: Freshman | Colorado
    5. G Isaiah Collier | Ht./Wt.: 6-3, 195 pounds | Class: Freshman | USC
    6. G Thierry Darlan | Ht./Wt.: 6-6, 190 pounds | G League Ignite

    7. G Tyrese Proctor
    Ht./Wt.: 6-5, 175 pounds | Class: Sophomore | Duke

Proctor announced that he was returning to Duke for his sophomore season after getting NBA scouts' attention during his freshman year. The Australian guard showed glimpses of what he could be at the next level this season but still needs a little more time to develop his game. Proctor originally reclassified a grade up and was one of the youngest players in college basketball last season. He's a great passer and facilitator, recording 10 assists in a win over Pitt late last season. Head coach Jon Scheyer has a talented group coming in next season, and Proctor could be the first player off the board for this Duke squad in the 2024 NBA Draft.
    8. G Justin Edwards | Ht./Wt.: 6-7, 180 pounds | Class: Freshman | Kentucky
    9. C Aaron Bradshaw | Ht./Wt.: 7-2, 210 pounds | Class: Freshman | Kentucky
    10. G Ja'Kobe Walter | Ht./Wt.: 6-5, 185 pounds | Class: Freshman | Baylor
    11. G A.J. Johnson | Ht./Wt.: 6-6, 170 pounds | Class: Freshman | Illawarra Hawks (Australia)
    12. G Riley Kugel | Ht./Wt.: 6-5, 205 pounds | Class: Sophomore | Florida
    13. G D.J. Wagner | Ht./Wt.: 6-4, 165 pounds | Class: Freshman | Kentucky
    14. F Omaha Biliew | Ht./Wt.: 6-8, 210 pounds | Class: Freshman | Iowa State
    15. F Trevon Brazile | Ht./Wt.: 6-10, 200 pounds | Class: Sophomore | Arkansas
    16. C Donovan Clingan | Ht./Wt.: 7-2, 265 pounds | Class: Sophomore | Connecticut
    17. G/F Bobi Klintman | Ht./Wt.: 6-10, 225 pounds | Cairns Taipans (Australia)
    18. G Elmarko Jackson | Ht./Wt.: 6-4, 195 pounds | Class: Freshman | Kansas

    19. C Kyle Filipowski
    Ht./Wt.: 7-0, 230 pounds | Class: Sophomore | Duke

Filipowski was instrumental in Duke's success last season in Scheyer's first year as head coach. He elected to return for his sophomore season after requiring a double hip surgery that took place in April. Filipowski has no problem stepping in and taking 3-pointers off the pick-and-pop but wasn't consistent enough this season, shooting just 28% from behind the arc.
    20. G Stephon Castle | Ht./Wt.: 6-6, 205 pounds | Class: Freshman | Connecticut
    21. F Mackenzie Mgbako | Ht./Wt.: 6-9, 210 pounds | Class: Freshman | Indiana
    22. G Trey Alexander | Ht./Wt.: 6-4, 185 pounds | Class: Sophomore | Creighton

    23. G Jared McCain
    Ht./Wt.: 6-4, 195 pounds | Class: Freshman | Duke

McCain finds a way to win at every level and is one of the best 3-point shooting point guards in the incoming freshman class. He reads the pick-and-roll very well, and if the defender slips or gives him any sort of space, he's letting it fly.
    24. F Adem Bona | Ht./Wt.: 6-11, 260 pounds | Class: Sophomore | UCLA
    25. G/F Dillon Mitchell | Ht./Wt.: 6-8, 205 pounds | Class: Sophomore | Texas
    26. C Kel'el Ware | Ht./Wt.: 7-0, 210 pounds | Class: Sophomore | Indiana
    27. G London Johnson | Ht./Wt.: 6-3, 180 pounds | G League Ignite
    28. G Bronny James | Ht./Wt.: 6-2, 190 pounds | Class: Freshman | USC
    29. G Kylan Boswell | Ht./Wt.: 6-2 195 pounds | Class: Sophomore | Arizona
    30. G Trentyn Flowers | Ht./Wt.: 6-9, 185 pounds | Class: Freshman | Louisville

I mean, if anything close to this ends up happening then the decision to return to Duke made many, many millions of dollars for all three of Flip, Proc, and Mitch. Flip and Proc going from late first (or early second) to lottery is likely worth about $6-10 million over your first 3 years in the league. For Mitchell, going from late second or undrafted to late first means you go from a non-guaranteed contract that is likely a $500k/year 2-way deal to a guaranteed $6 million.

It is of course a HUGE "if" as to whether this holds up but if it does then these guys made genius-level decisions...

...then again, everyone thought Terquavion Smith and perhaps Caleb Love were making the same decisions a year ago and it didn't exactly work out for them, now did it?

-Jason "and it is a ton more fun to play on national TV in front of rabid crowds twice a week for Duke than it is to take a bus from Birmingham to Greensboro to play in front of dozens of fans" Evans

    France team for International competition

Not a bad nucleus for future French teams in FIBA and the Olympics:

Wembanyama, Coulibaly, and Risacher (projected #2 or #3 overall pick)

Will they put together a national team on the order of some previous international powerhouses like Spain and Argentina?

Serbia can also field a decent team. The days of US pro domination is coming to an end

Adam Spinella, who provided regular 2023 mock draft videos for all of last season, has a way-too-early look at the first round of 2024.

    1. Ron Holland, G League Ignite
    2. Justin Edwards, Kentucky
    3. Matas Buzelis, G League Ignite
    4. Elliot Cadeau, UNC
    5. Alexandre Sarr, Australia/Perth Wildcats
    6. Izan Almansa, G League Ignite

    7. Tyrese Proctor, Duke

"My favorite returner to the college basketball ranks is the big point guard at Duke, Tyrese Proctor. 6-foot-4, maybe 6-5, always been seen as a strong defender and an elite creator for others with the ball in his hands. Duke didn't commit to putting the ball there till later on in the season and I thought he really popped over the final month of the year. He showed a lot of late season upside that's going to allow him to continue to get better next year. The area where that upside really came in is the ability to create his own shot. It was a huge issue for him the start of the season at Duke. It's hard to justify NBA guys playing with the ball in their hands if they aren't much of a threat to score. Proctor looked much more comfortable creating his own in the mid-range area and has started to use his physical frame to create space for him to finish near the basket. A lot of upside for Proctor to tap into this year with the Blue Devils."

I complimented Cadeau in several posts when he reclassed, thinking him, unfortunately, a big plus for the ‘23-‘24 Heels. But predicting him as #4 ^ in the ‘24 draft really surprises me.

He had Dariq number 3 , Cam Whitmore 4 and Nick :
Smith 5 in his way to early draft last year. Missed on Miller. A prognosticator this guy is not. Cadeau is playing for UNC. That should already knock him back to close to the second round.

That stood out to me, too. Well, his height stands out to me. When is the last time the NBA drafted a player that is allegedly below 6'0 tall in the lottery, let alone in the top 5? I don't even know the answer to that one as I gave up after looking through the last 10 years of NBA draft picks. Similar players like Chandler Kennedy were 2nd round picks. To project that Cadeau will be drafted that high is an extreme outlier for a player that can only reasonably be expected to defend one position. He would have to be a generational talent. As it, he has never been considered the top prospect in either the Class of 2024 or 2023.

Also only an average shooter for a guard.

Flip isn’t even in his mock first round? The guy many thought could’ve challenged for the late lottery THIS year, when 2024 is a consensus weaker class? That seems like a massive, massive oversight.

Also, I echo the senti, ents of those questioning Cadeau at No. 4. In the modern game guys at his height have to be plus plus shooters to even get lottery consideration typically, and that’s not Cadeau’s scouting report from what I’ve seen.

I know this is a “way too early” mock, but for a guy that’s typically been a more reliable mock drafter this seems really, really odd.

I too was a bit surprised to see Elliot Cadeau at #4 when I haven't seen him at all in other mock drafts so far. The choice certainly has invited discussion.

Adam Spinella is a high school coach in his day job, and for this side gig, he relies heavily on his study of game film. (He got to see Cam Whitmore in person, as an opposing player.) A year ago for those three guys (and right now for Cadeau), he's basing his opinion almost exclusively on high school and AAU games. If you watch the video, he puts some thought into how he thinks some players might be used moving forward, and probably dropped Kentucky's Aaron Bradshaw to an honorable mention because of his recent foot injury.

I feel confident that his predictions for Cadeau will fall back to Earth by November or December, when he starts to review UNC games.

It's not a mock draft, but Jonathan Wasserman of Bleacher Report has his first Top 50 Big Board for the 2024 NBA Draft. Elliot Cadeau is #26.

    1. Ron Holland (G League Ignite, SF, 2005)
    2. Matas Buzelis (G League Ignite, SG/SF, 2004)
    3. D.J. Wagner (Kentucky, PG, Freshman)
    4. Justin Edwards (Kentucky, SF, Freshman)
    5. Elmarko Jackson (Kansas, PG, Freshman)
    6. Isaiah Collier (USC, PG, Freshman)
    7. Donovan Clingan (Connecticut, C, Sophomore)
    8. Stephon Castle (Connecticut, SG, Freshman)
    9. Tyrese Proctor (Duke, PG/SG, Sophomore)

Tyrese Proctor started to look far more comfortable with his creation and shooting midway through January. And now there are breakout expectations after his decision to return for a sophomore season in which he'll be around the same age (turns 20 in April) as many freshmen.

Over his last 14 games, Proctor averaged 4.3 assists to 1.8 turnovers while hitting 39.5 percent of his threes. The flashes of creation were there as well, as the 6'5" ball-handler pulled off some slick moves to separate.

Lacking strength and athleticism, he'll have to finish more efficiently, and for an outstanding free-throw shooter (87.1 percent), 70 attempts in 36 games was too low.

But for a 19-year-old, Proctor's smooth game off the dribble, shot-making and passing IQ have scouts' attention. Some improvements to his body and general execution should send him up boards into the lottery mix.
    10. Kel'el Ware (Indiana, C, Sophomore)
    11. Caleb Foster (Duke, PG/SG, Freshman)

With Tyrese Proctor and Jeremy Roach back at Duke, Foster may have trouble building a 2024 draft case coming off the bench. It may be safer to project a 2025 lottery pick, but the big board accounts for long-term potential regardless of draft year, and Foster's 6'5" size, creativity and shot-making fuel dangerous scoring potential. He's not as convincing of a facilitator, but providing instant offense with relative efficiency—and showing some signs of effective playmaking—could sway teams to reach early next June, even if his production fluctuates in Duke's loaded rotation.
    12. Zaccharie Risacher (JL Bourg, SF/PF, 2005)
    13. Aaron Bradshaw (Kentucky, C, Freshman)
    14. Thierry Darlan (G League Ignite, SG/SF, 2004)
    15. Kyle Filipowski (Duke, PF, Sophomore)

Filipowski could have had first-round suitors in 2023, but he'll be back at Duke with a goal of improving his three-point shooting, scoring efficiency and rim protection. At 7'0", the potential to stretch the floor, attack closeouts, create from the post and slide defensively could lead to some dominant performances and draft buzz again.
    16. Adem Bona (UCLA, C, Sophomore)
    17. Ja'Kobe Walter (Baylor, SG, Freshman)
    18. Alex Sarr (Perth Wildcats, PF/C, 2005)
    19. Aday Mara (Zaragoza, C, 2005)
    20. Melvin Ajinca (Saint Quentin, SG, 2004)
    21. Jared McCain (Duke, SG, Freshman)

McCain's shooting should earn him minutes and NBA fans. He's one of his class' top shot-makers, and he adds intangibles with his IQ and competitiveness. Creating and finishing inside the arc will be his challenge as a 6'3", below-the-rim athlete.
    22. Judah Mintz (Syracuse, PG/SG, Sophomore)
    23. Trevon Brazile (Arkansas, PF/C, Junior)
    24. Izan Almansa (G League Ignite, PF/C, 2005)
    25. Baba Miller (Florida State, SF, Sophomore)
    26. Elliot Cadeau (North Carolina, PG, Freshman)
    27. Cody Williams (Colorado, SF, Freshman)
    28. Tristan da Silva (Colorado, PF, Senior)
    29. Xavier Booker (Michigan State, PF/C, Freshman)
    30. Mackenzie Mgbako (Indiana, SF, Freshman)
    31. Bobi Klintman (Cairns Taipans, PF, 2003)
    32. Ajay Mitchell (Santa Barbara, PG, Junior)
    33. Zvonimir Ivisic (Studentski Centar, C, 2003)
    34. Trey Alexander (Creighton, SG, Junior)
    35. Reece Beekman (Virginia, PG, Senior)
    36. Bronny James (USC, SG, Freshman)
    37. Omaha Biliew (Iowa State, SF/PF, Freshman)
    38. Robert Dillingham (Kentucky, PG/SG, Freshman)
    39. Sean Stewart (Duke, PF/C, Freshman)

Stewart might not be one-and-done, but NBA scouts may still detect valued defensive versatility tied to his movement at 6'9", plus enticing fluidity/coordination with his face-up offense outside the paint.
    40. London Johnson (G League Ignite, PG, 2004)
    41. Dillon Jones (Weber State, SG/SF, Junior)
    42. Tyler Smith (G League Ignite, PF, 2004)
    43. Terrance Arceneaux (Houston, SG/SF, Sophomore)
    44. Riley Kugel (Florida, SF, Sophomore)
    45. Nikola Đurišić (Mega MIS, SG/SF, 2004)
    46. Jalen Bridges (Baylor, SF, Senior)
    47. Baylor Scheierman (Creighton, SF, Senior)
    48. Kobe Johnson (USC, SF, Junior)
    49. RJ Luis (St. John's, SF, Sophomore)
    50. DaRon Holmes II (Dayton, C, Junior)

CBS sports has its 2024 early mock draft up as well (dated July 12) and it is more similar to Givony's and Krysten Peek's, with no mention in the first round of any of Duke's freshmen:

    1 Matas Buzelis | SF | G League Ignite
    2 Ron Holland | SF | G League Ignite.
    3 Isaiah Collier | PG | USC
4 Zaccharie Risacher | SF | JL Bourg
    5 DJ Wagner | SG | Kentucky
6 Tyrese Proctor | PG | Duke -- Proctor profiles as a potential second-year breakout candidate at Duke, where in 2022-23 he was one of the younger players in college basketball after reclassifying. He has a big frame and good playmaking abilities, which should be on full display in 2023-24 as he takes over as the primary facilitator for the Blue Devils.

    7 Stephon Castle | PG | UConn
    8 Donovan Clingan | C | UConn
    9 Cody Williams | SF | Colorado
    10 Justin Edwards | SF | Kentucky
    11 Thierry Darlan | SG | G League Ignite
    12 Aaron Bradshaw | C | Kentucky
    13 Bronny James | SG | USC
    14 Ja'Kobe Walter | SG | Baylor
15 Kyle Filipowski | PF | Duke -- Filipowski is a former five-star recruit who surprisingly came back to school for a sophomore season to build off a spectacular freshman campaign. After leading Duke in points and rebounds he could be in line to play his way into the back half of the lottery in 2024.

    16 Mackenzie Mgbako | PF | Indiana
    17 Ugonna Onyenso | PF | Kentucky
18 Omaha Biliew | PF | Iowa State
    19 Trey Alexander | PG | Creighton
    20 Adem Bona | C | UCLA
    21 Dillon Mitchell | SF | Texas
    22 Bobi Klintman | PF | NBL.
    23 Kel'el Ware | C | Indiana.
24 Baba Miller | PF | Florida State
    25 Ryan Kalkbrenner | C | Creighton
    26 Elmarko Jackson | PG | Kansas
    27 Alex Karaban | PF | UConn
28 Dillon Jones | SF | Weber State
    29 Judah Mintz | PG | Syracuse
    30 Zach Edey | C | Purdue

Bronny James #13 in that CBS mock draft?

What would Caleb Foster (unranked in the mock) have to say about that?

Snubbed Duke basketball signee ends Bronny James' prep career

On Monday night, LeBron James tweeted that his eldest son, 2023 McDonald's All-American combo guard Bronny James, was better than some of the NBA players he watched on League Pass that day. But it's now clear he isn't better than future Duke basketball point guard Caleb Foster, arguably this year's biggest McDonald's snub.

Foster, a 6-foot-5, 190-pound five-star who ranks No. 17 overall on the 247Sports 2023 Composite, finished with a game-high 28 points to lead Notre Dame (Calif.) to an 80-61 victory over James and his Sierra Canyon squad in the CIF State Division I SoCal Regional Final. James finished with only 10 points this go-round.

And James was one of several Sierra Canyon players who failed to contain Foster. came out here tonight and showed why I should be a McDonald's All-American," Foster said on Tuesday night, per Los Angeles Daily News reporter Tarek Fattal, after outperforming Bronny James for the third time in the past six weeks.

Hoop Social has made its own Big Board of 100 prospects for the 2024 NBA Draft. I can't tell which is worse: the lazy comparisons given to some players, or the awful spelling. "Jeramy" Roach = Tre Jones? "Henery" Coleman? Really? (The author is a pastor in a West African church, so I'll give him a pass on the spelling, but this website desperately needs an editor.)

Keep in mind that this list (and roywhite's unfortunate banner headline above) were written before Bronny James' health scare.

I'll share a more readable version of the top 40 and some names of interest after that.

Click over to find a third Doug McDermott and Derrick Jones Jr. And it's not just the Jeremy/Tre comparison. Tyrese Proctor gets compared to another Australian guy. Kel'el Ware (who transferred from Oregon) gets compared to an Oregon guy. Similarly, Matthew Cleveland (transfer from FSU) gets compared to an FSU guy. Mackenzie Mgbako replaces Dale Davis' son at Indiana and gets compared to Dale Davis.

It's probably hard to think up 100 different NBA comparisons for prospects that a guy in West Africa might have only seen on YouTube, but maybe I don't paint myself in that corner.

There has been a guy on one of this lists for the last 4 years but did not make it this year. I bet you can guess who.

Well, there are no NBA comps for Armando Bacot because he's, uh, one of a kind?

It will be interesting to see if Hubert Davis can continue the Carolina Cult tradition of keeping players in the program. After the 2023-2024 season, Harrison Ingram would have one more year of eligibility, Jalen Washington would have two more, and Elliot Cadeau would have three more. Bacot, RJ Davis, Cormac Ryan, and Paxson Wojcik will have to go.
