Proctor announced that he was returning to Duke for his sophomore season after getting NBA scouts' attention during his freshman year. The Australian guard showed glimpses of what he could be at the next level this season but still needs a little more time to develop his game. Proctor originally reclassified a grade up and was one of the youngest players in college basketball last season. He's a great passer and facilitator, recording 10 assists in a win over Pitt late last season. Head coach Jon Scheyer has a talented group coming in next season, and Proctor could be the first player off the board for this Duke squad in the 2024 NBA Draft.

Filipowski was instrumental in Duke's success last season in Scheyer's first year as head coach. He elected to return for his sophomore season after requiring a double hip surgery that took place in April. Filipowski has no problem stepping in and taking 3-pointers off the pick-and-pop but wasn't consistent enough this season, shooting just 28% from behind the arc.

McCain finds a way to win at every level and is one of the best 3-point shooting point guards in the incoming freshman class. He reads the pick-and-roll very well, and if the defender slips or gives him any sort of space, he's letting it fly.

I mean, if anything close to this ends up happening then the decision to return to Duke made many, many millions of dollars for all three of Flip, Proc, and Mitch. Flip and Proc going from late first (or early second) to lottery is likely worth about $6-10 million over your first 3 years in the league. For Mitchell, going from late second or undrafted to late first means you go from a non-guaranteed contract that is likely a $500k/year 2-way deal to a guaranteed $6 million.

It is of course a HUGE "if" as to whether this holds up but if it does then these guys made genius-level decisions...

...then again, everyone thought Terquavion Smith and perhaps Caleb Love were making the same decisions a year ago and it didn't exactly work out for them, now did it?

"My favorite returner to the college basketball ranks is the big point guard at Duke, Tyrese Proctor. 6-foot-4, maybe 6-5, always been seen as a strong defender and an elite creator for others with the ball in his hands. Duke didn't commit to putting the ball there till later on in the season and I thought he really popped over the final month of the year. He showed a lot of late season upside that's going to allow him to continue to get better next year. The area where that upside really came in is the ability to create his own shot. It was a huge issue for him the start of the season at Duke. It's hard to justify NBA guys playing with the ball in their hands if they aren't much of a threat to score. Proctor looked much more comfortable creating his own in the mid-range area and has started to use his physical frame to create space for him to finish near the basket. Flip isn’t even in his mock first round? The guy many thought could’ve challenged for the late lottery THIS year, when 2024 is a consensus weaker class? That seems like a massive, massive oversight.

Also, I echo the senti,ents of those questioning Cadeau at No. 4. In the modern game guys at his height have to be plus plus shooters to even get lottery consideration typically, and that’s not Cadeau’s scouting report from what I’ve seen.

I know this is a “way too early” mock, but for a guy that’s typically been a more reliable mock drafter this seems really, really odd.

I too was a bit surprised to see Elliot Cadeau at #4 when I haven't seen him at all in other mock drafts so far. The choice certainly has invited discussion.

Adam Spinella is a high school coach in his day job, and for this side gig, he relies heavily on his study of game film. (He got to see Cam Whitmore in person, as an opposing player.) A year ago for those three guys (and right now for Cadeau), he's basing his opinion almost exclusively on high school and AAU games. If you watch the video, he puts some thought into how he thinks some players might be used moving forward, and probably dropped Kentucky's Aaron Bradshaw to an honorable mention because of his recent foot injury.

I feel confident that his predictions for Cadeau will fall back to Earth by November or December, when he starts to review UNC games.

I too was a bit surprised to see Elliot Cadeau at #4 when I haven't seen him at all in other mock drafts so far.

It's not a mock draft, but Jonathan Wasserman of Bleacher Report has his first Top 50 Big Board for the 2024 NBA Draft. Elliot Cadeau is #26.

Tyrese Proctor started to look far more comfortable with his creation and shooting midway through January. And now there are breakout expectations after his decision to return for a sophomore season in which he'll be around the same age (turns 20 in April) as many freshmen.

Over his last 14 games, Proctor averaged 4.3 assists to 1.8 turnovers while hitting 39.5 percent of his threes. The flashes of creation were there as well, as the 6'5" ball-handler pulled off some slick moves to separate.

Lacking strength and athleticism, he'll have to finish more efficiently, and for an outstanding free-throw shooter (87.1 percent), 70 attempts in 36 games was too low.

It may be safer to project a 2025 lottery pick, but the big board accounts for long-term potential regardless of draft year, and Foster's 6'5" size, creativity and shot-making fuel dangerous scoring potential. He's not as convincing of a facilitator, but providing instant offense with relative efficiency—and showing some signs of effective playmaking—could sway teams to reach early next June, even if his production fluctuates in Duke's loaded rotation.

Snubbed Duke basketball signee ends Bronny James' prep career

On Monday night, LeBron James tweeted that his eldest son, 2023 McDonald's All-American combo guard Bronny James, was better than some of the NBA players he watched on League Pass that day. But it's now clear he isn't better than future Duke basketball point guard Caleb Foster, arguably this year's biggest McDonald's snub.

Foster, a 6-foot-5, 190-pound five-star who ranks No. 17 overall on the 247Sports 2023 Composite, finished with a game-high 28 points to lead Notre Dame (Calif.) to an 80-61 victory over James and his Sierra Canyon squad in the CIF State Division I SoCal Regional Final. James finished with only 10 points this go-round.
