The three statues near the athletic facilities of Wallace Wade, Bill Murray and Eddie Cameron were all done by the same Duke alumnus, Frank Creech, Class of 1964, who passed away too soon. Frank was a football player for Bill Murray and, IIRC, one of six art majors in the entire class. That's an interesting story, but there's more...
The statue of Bill Murray was commissioned by the University of Delaware, where Murray had been a very successful coach before returning to Duke (49-16-2). The Duke trophy is a second casting based on the original. Here's his bio from the Creative Roundup we put together for the 50th reunion:
Frank Creech (1941-2006)
Frank is best known for his sculptures of Wallace Wade, Eddie Cameron and Bill Murray. Frank returned to his hometown of Smithfield, NC to chair the art departments of Gaston College and of Johnston Comm. Coll. N.C. Governor Mike Easley awarded Frank the Order of the Long Leaf Pine in 2005. His paintings and ceramics, as well as his sculptures, are in private collections throughout the Southeast. Kay Creech provided the slides for the Roundup.
