It seems like I should know who Karlis Lasmanis and Nauris Meizis are, but I honestly haven’t the faintest clue. I feel left out.

    Me neither.

Except Team USA is by far the most talented team...not true of last season's Duke team. I wonder how many first round draft players that team would end up having.

Team USA has the most talented players - not the most talented team.

Ok, I can admit when I was wrong. Jackie Young wasn't literally sitting on a beach. It was 10:30 at night, so she was literally sitting in her hotel on the beach.

Saturday night, team plane leaves Monday, and she needs 2 negative COVID tests on separate days before Japan will even let her in the country. So IF she tests negative (I wonder who else was called, there had to be backups to the backup), she'll have to take a commercial flight which gets into Tokyo on Wednesday. That's when she meets her teammates, and competition begins Saturday.

    Wow.

Can someone explain to me why, in group play scoring, teams get one point for a loss? It seems that the scoring is 2 points for a win and 1 point for a loss. When would a team get 0 points (for a default?)

It's like a participation trophy. They don't want anyone to feel bad.

The last time that I explicitly remember a 0 point group stage game was when Qatar protested and did not play after FIBA ruled that some of their players had questionable proof of citizenship. I suppose if a team was missing too many players due to virus protocols, that would be 0 points too, although when that happened to Argentina's women's team, they ended up having to withdraw completely, which is a separate process.

For anyone still awake, this USA women's game should be entertaining. Japan plays a unique style that takes time to adjust to.

Haha! But this is the only explanation that makes sense to me. I have not heard of other sports that award a point for a loss. Maybe I have not been paying attention.

The NHL awards 1 point for an overtime loss.

Good point. But that is to differentiate it from a regulation loss so makes some sense.

And this allows to differentiate between a loss and a no contest/forfeit.

They need to do more on offense than dribbling around for a bit or making one pass and taking a contested shot.

They aren't running anything on offense.
