CBS’s early rankings have Gonzaga #1, OSU #6, UK #15, MSU #22. That is a brutal OOC schedule with none of these games being played at home. The team will be tested early and often.

Duke is #8 in the CBS article I saw.

Interesting. That would open up the schedule a little bit and spare us yet another Michigan State game.

I would really enjoy watching, as part of Coach K’s farewell tour, an out of conference game vs a team coached by a former player. Let’s get Harvard, UCF, Northwestern, Austin Peay, Arizona State, or Niagara on the schedule.

I'm curious. Why do you want to get rid of Louisville? I've been down there a couple of times to see Duke play and have enjoyed the experience.

I have made the trip to the KFC YUM! Center, too and it is a fine venue. It is huge! It reminds me of an NBA arena. Louisville (the locals call it Lou-vull) is a fine city. Awesome downtown and being on the Ohio River provides for some beautiful scenery.

I don’t particularly care for the program after the brushes with the law they’ve had (Dino Gaudio extortion, Pitino pay-for-play and pay-for-escorts scandal) because they have given our conference a bad look. They also seem to get away with a lot of contact when they play Duke especially at Louisville. Their style of play is very physical, brash, and at times, seems better suited for the gridiron given how much contact they make.

Every fan has different experiences. I was always treated better at Maryland, and I don't have much of an accent by Louisville standards. The trip to Frisch's is always the best part.

I believe that K has said in the past that he does not enjoy competing against his former players. It tears at his emotions too much. I doubt we schedule something in his final season.

Haha. When was the last time we traveled to play a non-mandated, non-conference opponent on their court (not named St. John’s- they sort of count)?
Edit: don’t include Davidson in Charlotte.

I believe the last non ACC/B1G Challenge or non-mandated, non-conference road game Duke played on the campus of an opposing school inside the host’s arena (not Madison Square Garden vs St. John’s or the Verizon Center/Capital One Arena vs Georgetown or UNC-Greensboro at the Greensboro Coliseum or UNLV at the T-Mobile Arena) was December 6th, 2008 in Ann Arbor, Michigan at the Crisler Arena at the University of Michigan. Duke lost that game 81-73.

Very comprehensive list. Thanks. I remembered going to a game at Northeastern in their fairly small gym while I was a student (mid-90s). My initial search on GoDuke showed nothing but searching elsewhere I found that it was on December 30, 1995 - GoDuke shows it as being a game at Northwestern in Chicago, which is incorrect. It was Matt Christensen's freshman year so perhaps it was to get him a "home game" before his mission. The box score I found online shows the attendance as a new record of 5,820. It was a really cool old arena where the Bruins and Celtics played pre-Boston Garden.

We also played UCLA at Pauley in February, 1997, which I guess would be the 6th most recent.

I know you are just following the rules that someone else set forth but to whoever set up these "rules," a lot of the disqualified games such as Georgetown are off campus but those are the team's true home arenas. I would disqualify most of the Villanova games at the various arenas where the 76ers have played as they only play select games there. But Georgetown plays the vast majority of their games at the Wizards arena, and same with St. John's (though the St. John's games definitely have a very heavy Duke presence).

I did not realize that about Northeastern. Thanks for pointing that out. That is a fine campus and area. I have been there twice in the mid 2000s, and another cool fact about their athletic program (different sport than men’s basketball) is that their baseball team is coached by Mike Glavine. He is the brother of MLB Hall of Famer and 300+ game winning southpaw Tom Glavine.

I simply missed the 97 game vs UCLA at Pauley Pavilion. Thank you for pointing that out, too.

The criteria of the stadium being on campus is strange. Yes, students at the home team’s school without transportation to the off campus site of the game may benefit the visiting team. But playing at some of these neutral site stadiums Duke has played at can still be daunting and present an extremely spirited environment to play in.

It was neat to go back and look up some of the games. Some I had forgotten about. The game at Allen Fieldhouse in 88 was awesome. Duke won 74-70 in OT.

Future Wake Forest coach Danny Manning dropped 25 and 10 on Duke later that season in the national semifinal, though, and Duke lost. Manning was a senior and KU won the national title that year.

I believe this is the game that convinced Coach K there is little reason to play games on opposing teams home courts. It may have taken him a few more years to all but eliminate the practice, but this game is legendary for the way Duke gotjobbed by the refs and K has never forgotten it.

It will be interesting to see how Coach Scheyer schedules when he becomes head coach after this season. Does he continue the trend established by Coach K of extremely rare out-of-conference, non-mandated road games or does he mix a few in from time to time? I’d really like to see Duke at Northwestern and Northwestern at Duke or Harvard at Duke and Duke at Harvard started back up.
