It can definitely be lost on Thursday though

Glad I didn’t participate. I would’ve picked Rory and Koepka, and both of them are blowing up (in a bad way) in this first round. And apparently Bryson‘s new driver is letting him down. Two big left hooks off the first two tees.

It’ll just be so much fun to watch someone try something really different at the Masters.
Left of the first fairway is the ninth fairway coming back to the house. I guess you could theoretically play from there into the first green but not sure why he would. (Right of the first fairway is in the trees).

Greens are looking a little rough on some holes this year at Augusta.

The 16th looks the worst I think I have seen it in a long time. Looks like it needs some water.

He has been known to deliberately use the wrong fairway. Nothing would surprise me with this guy.

I believe his theory was that he was going to hit it over the trees on the right and get it close to the green. I’m still unable to envision that. but I’m almost positive that’s what I heard the announcers say he was going to try and do. Having said that, I heard it was a disaster. He hooked it badly to the left instead.

My McIlroy pick isn’t looking good. Rory is +5 through 14.

I have him too. Hope he can get in under 76 today and go low tomorrow.

Hoo boy, the putting struggles are coming back for Dustin Johnson. The reigning Masters champion just carded a first round 74 with a double bogey on 18.

Yea, but hard to make birdies (or even pars) if you're in the woods on many holes off the tee. Bryson's super length works ONLY if he can get his drives in the fairways or rough. And with his swing speed and his new 4.5 degree driver, even the slightest mishit or fraction of a second mis-timing will drive the ball way off course. This is what he is fighting today.

That course isn't safe until you're in the clubhouse.

Not surprising. After the "debacle" last November when Dustin was -20 for the tournament and many other players shot the lights out with the soft greens, I'm sure word went out from the higher ups at Augusta National to the Super and his staff to get the greens as hard and fast as possible without completely killing them. It's really the only thing that keeps the players from going low on AN.

I can't remember who the quote was attributed to -- maybe Fred Couples -- but it goes:

If a bogey golfer were playing Augusta National for the first time and was allowed to drop the ball 100 yards from every hole, he or she would not break 100.

Just give me a chance! (luckily, my forte is putt-putt)

Edit: Hey mods, something has gone screwy with the quote function.

Justin Rose with a darn impressive round going. -4 thru 13. Just a solid ball striker. US Open champion at Merion in 2013.

He has a shot to go low today which is darn impressive!

How about we discuss the actual tournament in a different thread, since some posters are watching but not degenerates.

It’s clear to me from the hi-res video that he depressed a clump of sand directly behind the ball but I couldn’t say it it would be clear to the naked eye. That’s a tough one.
