Degenerate Gamblers Presents: the 2021 Masters

It's officially spring - weather is turning warmer, azaleas are blooming, baseball has started, there are some basketball games happening that I'm less interested in this year, and everyone's jealousy of Jim Nantz is kicked up a few notches - time for the Masters, and more importantly our annual Masters Pool!

    Here's how it works:

    1. Select of team of as many golfers as the "salary cap" allows
    2. The salary cap is 30 points - use them wisely!
    3. Each player's "cost" against the salary cap is their OWGR points total rounded down. So, Dustin Johnson "costs" 11; Justin Thomas - 9; Jon Rahm - 8; etc.
    4. Anyone whose OWGR points is less than 2, costs 2. In other words, no player in the field costs less than 2.
    5. You can pick any player in the field - it's not a draft, so in theory you could have the exact same team as someone else.
    6. Your final score is based on the total money won by all the players on your team. If one of your players misses the cut, you get $0 for that player.
    7. As a tiebreaker, you also pick the winning score relative to par (e.g., -12).

As a special prize this year, I will award a green jacket to the winner!

Deadline to submit picks is Wednesday at midnight. Happy picking!

I rarely try these golf contests, but the Green Jacket may just get me to nibble!

At 2 points, can we just take Speith off the board since everyone is going to pick him?

I'm slightly bummed that he won last week as he's been under-the-radar good this season, and I thought I could get him with a sleeper pick. Now, at a cost of 2, I will be surprised if many leave them off their team. That said, only twice has a player who won the week before gone on to capture the green jacket (Phil in 06 and Sandy Lyle in 88). Interesting choices!

Yeah, he was going to be on my team for sure even prior to last week. I don't expect him to win, but that isn't needed for value.

There are some really interesting options out there. A few different paths to fielding a strong team. Looks like you and I had similar minds on the lower end of the price range. I should have put my team as tentative, as there are still a few things floating in my mind.

Without giving away other picks, I think I could easily create 3 to 4 teams with entirely different players that I would feel almost as good about as my first iteration. That's one of the things I love so much about this format.

I'm usually near the bottom in these contests, but subject to second thoughts, here I go off the high dive:

    Bryson DeChambeau - 7
    Collin Morikawa -- 7
    Rory McIlroy -- 5
    Tony Finau -- 5
    Jordan Spieth -- 2
    Sergio Garcia -- 2
    Justin Rose -- 2

Looks like 30 points to me.

How did JT, Wolff, and Morikawa take the news that they were no longer part of team CDu?

Making my picks in a moment... but I hope we all have seen the video of Bryson DeChambeau just launching balls into orbit with VJ Singh watching in awe. Hysterical stuff!

Why are you wasting time here when you could be wasting it by listening to the latest episode of the DBR Podcast?
