Did he win a lot? Sure, and if that's all you care about, I guess respect him for doing whatever it took to win.

That is a great question and one that I had not thought of.

    Good riddance to him.
Agreed. I respected him before the academic scandal. No respect after.

    • Jay Wright - not likely at all. Nova is already one of the top 10 jobs in the sport.
    • Nate Oates - very possible, he'd be on my short list.
    • Wes Miller - not ready, you gotta show major recruiting hops to get this gig and mid-major coaches are not there yet
    • Hubert Davis - not ready, exactly zero head coaching experience
    • Mark Few - nope, he's built a juggernaut. No reason to leave. He's at Gonzaga for life.
    • Bill Self - nope, he's at Kansas for life
    • Jerry Stackhouse - have you seen his record at Vandy?
Beard seems like the top choice on this list that is within the realm of possibility. But haven't the rumors been him to Texas? If UNC does want him, how great would it be if he chose Texas over them...

Edit re: Davis: Juwan Howard has shown that having zero head coaching experience isn't necessarily the deal breaker it might've been in the past. I think he's likely the exception rather than the rule considering his extensive experience as a top assistant with the Heat, etc., but I wouldn't completely rule out Davis on that alone.

Just reported on the radio that Beard is going to Texas.

Is it possible that the announcement from Roy motivated Texas to get Beard locked up ASAP?

Aha! I swear I didn't know that before I made the post

Now, who shall I will into existence as the next UNC coach?

I believe this was already locked up some time ago. Beard's buyout dropped significantly starting today.

    Nate James to coach UNC!
Promises to only throw two, possibly three games per season
Ol’ Roy is a trickster. I could see him getting up at the press conference and just saying happy April fools and walking away. Otoh, can’t say I’d be sorry to have him as a retired neighbor in Asheville

As a Vandy alum, I would like Stackhouse to get some consideration.

True. But I could see Beard saying “I know we agreed on a deal but UNC just called...” and Texas replying “sure, you can have that extra million a year you wanted. Sign right now.”

Brad - exactly. He ain't leaving the NBA (even for Duke. Shocking, I know... )
Bread - solid choice. Good coach. But not proven to be 'elite'
Wright - not leaving. If he leaves, it's for the NBA
Oats - been a head coach for exactly 6 seasons (4 in the tournament). This would be a huge step up and I assume UNC fans wouldn't be happy
    Miller - yup. not ready
    Davis - yup. not ready
Few - not leaving. If he leaves, it's for the NBA
Self - not leaving. If he leaves, it's for the NBA
Stackhouse - is the UNC coaching cupboard as bare as the Duke one? Must be...

Oats might bring some spice back to the rivalry, at least.

So it might be a good time to bail before the natives get restless.
They beat Philly in the playoffs twice already. That is not the highest bar plus Tatum is just 23 years old. He will get better. The C’s are a young team that will get better.

That is true, but at least he earned his national championships. It’s much easier to win when your opponent gives away the game at the end, again twice.
