That is a great question. I am not quite sure. It has to be extremely rare.

The pitcher in me still considers yesterday a “perfect game”

    Either way, what an effort.

Yep you nailed it, Oviedo was done in by 3 bad pitches. Otherwise he pitched decently. It was good to see Carpenter lay a bunt down the third base line into the shift and get a single last night. I hope Gant throws a good game tonight. It is important the Cardinals take this game to take the series and 3 of 4 from the Mets.

In a way, yes. Babe Ruth was ejected from a game after walking the first batter and arguing about the call. Ernie Shore came in to pitch, the runner on first was caught stealing, and then Shore got the next 26 men out.

I had never heard that story but if true that is one of the coolest and craziest baseball stories ever!

As a Dodgers fan, I texted a friend 15 games in and noted that they were on pace to win 140. That hasn’t aged well. I saw on the broadcast last night that they actually haven’t been outscored by very much during their current slump.

Their Pythagorean W-L is 20-12, which equates to 101 wins over a full season. They are 4-9 in one run games and 1-5 in extra innings so far, both stats that should normalize somewhat over time. Certainly no need to panic at this point.

Albert Pujols has been designated for assignment by the Los Angeles Angels, the team announced Thursday.

Pujols is slashing .198/.250/.372 in 92 plate appearances this year with five home runs and 12 RBIs. For his career, the 10-time All-Star has slashed .298/.376/.545 with 667 home runs and 2,112 RBIs.

"The Angels Organization proudly signed Albert Pujols in 2011, and are honored that he has worn an Angels jersey for nearly half of his Hall-of-Fame Career. Albert's historical accomplishments, both on and off the field, serve as an inspiration to athletes everywhere, and his actions define what it means to be a true Superstar. Since his Rookie of the Year Season in 2001, Albert and his wife Deidre have generously given their time and resources to countless charities throughout the world. We are thankful to the entire Pujols Family," Angels owner Arte Moreno said in a statement.

Pujols' 10-year, $240 million contract with the Angels expires after this season. He said in February that he hadn't decided whether to continue playing after this season.

Pujols, 41, batted .328 with 445 homers while winning three NL MVP awards in 11 seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals, but has been a .256 hitter with 222 homers over nine-plus seasons in Anaheim.

Sad to hear this, even as a Cub fan. Great player and a classy presence, on the field and off.

He was soooo good in St. Louis. Just so good.
Demented and sad, but social, right?

And Albert's batting average (as bad as it is) is twice that of Miguel Cabrera, who's making $28 million this year for batting under .100

there seems to be a lesson here about ultra long contracts...

Arguably the best Albert Pujols stat: he's the only player in MLB history with 3,000 hits, 600 homers and multiple World Series titles.

Honorable mention: he’s the only player to have 10 straight years of 30 HR, 100 RBI and a .300 batting average to start a career.

And he missed extending that streak in year 11 by .001 in his batting average and 1 RBI. He hit .299 with 37 HRs and 99 RBI in his 11th year.

The St. Louis Cardinals lost their 2nd straight game to the New York Mets today at Busch Stadium 4-1. The 4 game series ended in a split.

The Cardinals pitching staff walked 11 batters today.

The loss drops the Cardinals to 18-14. The Cardinals are back in
action tomorrow night at Busch Stadium as they kick off a 3 game series with the visiting Colorado Rockies. Game time tomorrow is 7:15 pm CT and will feature Jack Flaherty of the Cardinals against Austin Gomber of the Rockies.

    Let’s Go Cardinals!

The Braves swept the Nats in the nation’s capital today. The Nats fell to last place in the NL East at 12-15.

The Phillies swept the Brewers in Philadelphia. The Brewers have lost 5 in a row and are a game back of the NL Central leading St. Louis Cardinals at 17-15.

Brutal series for the Nats after winning 4 straight coming in. They out hit the Braves in 2 of the 3 games and 19-16 on the series but still got swept. Guess back to back games giving up grand slams isn’t a good idea? And today the Nats caught a tough break in the 8th as Victor Robles was punched out on a 2 out 3-2 pitch that wasn’t even close, that would have loaded the bases for the Nats most consistent hitter this year, Ryan Zimmerman (who promptly doubled to lead off the next inning but the Nats couldn’t bring the run home). Nats now go to visit the Yankees for 3, but at least have the top of the rotation coming up.

Yeah that call was brutal. Very low pitch. The Nats were right for being upset. It helped the Braves that they dodged Scherzer this series too. It will be nice for the Nats when Strasburg returns.

Yes, the Cardinal pitchers contributed heavily in the Mets win. Gant in particular as he gave up 6 of the 11 walks. He's issued 11 walks in his last two games. Somehow he'd been lucky until yesterday where his control issues bit him in the butt with a loss. Gant's era is 2.15 which is 19th in the majors but his WHIP 1.70 is the worst in the majors. After the game Gant said, " I just threw too many balls, man. Got to mix some more strikes in for sure". DUH! On the other side of the ledger, Taijuan Walker pitched a terrific game. He pitched 7 innings, 1 hit, 0 earned runs, 8 strikeouts, 0 walks. Met pitchers didn't allow any walks. Walker at one point retired 18 straight Cardinal hitters. Cardinal pitcher Miles Mikolas should come of IL some time this month and Gant may head to the bullpen or to AAA if he doesn't get his act together. Luck can only carry a major league pitcher so far. Walks are a killer. Not only does it put runners on base, it can keep the fielders from being on their toes.

    GoRedbirds!

Oh, Austin Gomber was one of the key pieces in the trade for Nolan Arenado. Gomber has not pitched well for the Rockies so far. Maybe the Cardinal hitters can keep it that way.

Yeah Gant needs to make more competitive pitches. The 6 walks yesterday was awful. I have faith he will.

I was sad to see Gomber go because I never think a team can have too many LHP starters or relievers. I am happy the Cardinals got Arenado though because he’s a legendary talent.

Speaking of left handed pitching, a guy in the Cardinals organization I am and a lot of others are high on made his AAA debut last night for the Memphis Redbirds. It was his first start above A ball. Matthew Liberatore is the Cardinals number 1 prospect and threw 6 IP, allowing 5 hits, 2 ER, walking none, and striking out 5. He is only 21. He was drafted 16th overall in the 2018 draft by the Rays. He was part of the trade to St. Louis that sent Jose Martinez and Randy Arozorena to Tampa Bay. The kid has some electric stuff. He has a classic pitcher’s build at 6’5”, 200 lbs. He had a good fastball with sink that sits in the low 90s and tops at 95-96 mph with a devastating change up and good 12-6 curveball. He’s also working on a slider. I think he’ll be a front line starting pitcher for the Cardinals pretty soon, like this year or next.
