    1) Adam Wainwright didn't have his best game but did get his 2,000 career strikeout, all with the Cardinals. He and the great Bob Gibson are the only two Cardinal pitchers to have at least 2,000 strikeouts in their careers. Adam becomes only the 85th pitcher in major league history to get to that mark. He's had more strikeouts this season than any season since 2014. He's aging well. Adam also reached the 200 inning mark yesterday. The last time he did that was also in 2014. The good Brewer fans and coaches gave Waino a standing ovation on the 2000th strikeout. They're right up there with Cardinal fans as the best in baseball.

    2) Paul Goldschmidt continued his hot hitting going 3-5 with 2 home runs. The first tied the game in the 7th inning and he hit a solo home run in the 9th to extend the lead. Goldy is slugging .844 in the 12 game win streak. That's slugging not OPS.

    3) The improved St. Louis bullpen pitched 6 scoreless innings and kept the Cards in it until the bats go hot. The Cards had 1 hit in the first 4 innings and Adrian Houser was pitching the second straight good game against the Redbirds and when he left the game, his team was up 5-1, thanks to Tyrone Taylor's 2 home runs. One a grand slam and the other a solo shot. Both came off Adam Wainwright. The Brewer bullpen then gave up 7 runs and the Cards had their 12th straight win.

    4) Wild Card standings in the NL. The Phillies and Padres won yesterday and the Reds lost. The Cardinal lead beginning play today: Phillies 4.5 games out and 5 games in the loss column. The Padres are 5 games out and 6 in the loss column and the Reds are 5.5 out and 6 in the loss column.

    5) The Cardinals now end the season with the Cubs and Brewers. 3 this weekend in Wrigley, then 3 against the Brewers in St. Louis and end the regular season at home against the Cubs with 3.

    GoRedbirds!
Excellent recap. It was a historic win for the Redbirds yesterday. In fact, the Cardinals are the 4th team in modern MLB history (since 1900) to overcome a deficit of 5+ runs to extend a win streak to 12 or more games.

They are the first team to do that since the "Moneyball" Athletics in 2002.

13 consecutive wins for the Cardinals

The Cardinals won their 13th consecutive game today, defeating the Cubs 8-5 at Wrigley Field in game 1 of a day night doubleheader. The win pushed the record of the Cardinals to 84-69 and 5 games up on the Phillies, 5.5 on the Reds and 6.5 games up on the Friars for the NL’s 2nd wild card spot with 9 games remaining. The magic number for the Cardinals to clinch a playoff spot in the 2021 postseason is now 5. The 13 game winning streak is the 2nd longest in franchise history. The 1935 Redbirds club won 14 straight which is the longest streak in franchise history. This is the first time in 86 years the Cardinals have won 13 in a row.

Paul Goldschmidt is making a push for the NL MVP. Today, he was 2-4 with a HR and 3 RBI. On the season, he’s hitting .293 with 30 HRs and 96 RBI. Tyler O’Neill also added his 30th HR of the season.

The Redbirds will play the Cubs again tonight in game 2 of the doubleheader at 7:05 pm CT. Jack Flaherty returns from the IL to get the start for the Redbirds opposite Kyle Davies.

    Let’s Go Cardinals!

A bit concerned being up 8-0 and giving up 5 in relief of Happ. Offense is on a roll. Fun both righty Rondon and lefty Nootbar pinch hitters both came through. Looking forward to #14 tonight!

I just received a rare thunderstorm alert for portions of SW San Diego County, which includes downtown (and Petco Park). Funny thing is, the Padres and Atlanta are scheduled to complete a game that was suspended back in April (?) due to weather — in Atlanta.

Now the Braves appear to have brought rain and thunder to San Diego.

Yeah, Reyes looked shaky out the pen today. I won’t lie, when the Cubs got it to 8-5 in the 6th (7 inning game), I got a bit nervous. Sosa left after being hit by a pitch. He took a 95 mph heater to his right (throwing) wrist. He made a bee line right for the tunnel and left the game. Fortunately, X-Rays were negative. I hope he doesn’t miss much time. At a minimum, he’ll likely be pretty sore. He has been playing his tail off lately defensively and at the dish. And he’s fast as lightning on the basepaths. The Redbirds have won 15 of 16. They’ve won 18 games in September.

Triumvirate of 30 HR hitters on the Redbirds

The Redbirds have had three players each hit 30+ HRs in a season twice in franchise history.

2004 - Albert Pujols, 46 HR; Scott Rolen, 34 HR; Jim Edmonds, 42 HR
    2021 - Nolan Arenado, 33 HR; Paul Goldschmidt, 30 HR; Tyler O’Neill, 30 HR

Yellow Red Sox jerseys should be illegal. Baseball should not be like basketball with a different jersey for every game.

    A Redbird September to remember

For the first time since 1935, the Cardinals have won 14 straight games. They defeated the Cubs at Wrigley Field tonight 12-4 to sweep the day night doubleheader and win their 14th consecutive game. The club now has 19 wins in September and have won 16 of their last 17. It is pretty special that only two teams have won 14 games in a row in franchise history, the 1935 and 2021 Redbird clubs. That’s 86 years folks!

Tyler O’Neill continues to mash the baseball. He was 2-5 with a HR and 3 RBI. He’s now batting .280 with 31 HR and 75 RBI this season. Lars Nootbaar was 3-4 with 2 HR and 3 RBI. Harrison Bader was 2-4 with a HR and 2 RBI. Paul DeJong was 2-4 with a HR.

The win pushed the record of the Cardinals to 85-69 and 5 games up on the Phillies for the NL’s 2nd wild card spot with 8 games remaining. The magic number for the Redbirds to clinch a spot in the 2021 MLB postseason is now 4.

The Cardinals go for the series win and longest winning streak in franchise history tomorrow at Wrigley Field. Jon Lester gets the start for the Redbirds opposite Adrian Sampson. Game time is set for 1:20 pm CT.

    Let’s Go Cardinals!

Happy to see DeJong hit one after Sosa went out. Mixed bag with Flaherty and Hudson. Knew Flaherty was only going to throw 15-20 pitches, didn’t know Hudson was going to throw 60+.
O’Neill is absolutely on a tear, great to see the bench with Nootbaar mashing.

Kind of surreal having Lester going against his former team for #15.

I'm pretty sure Hudson made 6 rehab starts in Memphis before joining big league team. I was pretty pleased with his outing yesterday. His recovery from TJ surgery is pretty remarkable. I think the surgery was done last September and I know it's around 12 months recovery time. Dakota began throwing 11 months from the date of his surgery.

Ponce deLeon was given his release and is now a Free Agent.

Today Jon Lester goes against Adrian Sampson, 1-2 with 2.84 era. Another afternoon game.

    GoRedbirds!

By the way, Tyler O'Neill came to the Cards in a trade with the Mariners not the Blue Jays. I got that wrong yesterday.

The Phillies have been hot lately and are only 2 games back of the Braves in the NL East. The Cardinal lead is 5 games over Philadelphia for the 2nd Wild Card spot. Reds 6 back and the Padres are 7 back.

Huge series in Atlanta next week between the Phillies and Braves. The loser of that series likely is eliminated from playoff contention. The winner of that series likely wins the NL East.

    A great day!

It was a great day for me as my Duke Football team won and goes to 3-1. Then my St. Louis Cardinals won their 15th straight game, 8-5 over the Cubs. The Cards try to make it 16 straight today at 2:20 EST. The Cardinals send righty Jake Woodford to the mound to face the Cubs, Keegan Thompson. The Cardinals magic number is down to 3 games.

    GoDuke & GoRedbirds.

15 wins in a row for the Cardinals

The Cardinals set a franchise record yesterday evening by winning their 15th straight game, beating the Cubs 8-5 at Wrigley Field to take the series. The win improved the record of the Cardinals to 86-69 and 5 games up on the Phillies, 6 games up on the Reds for the NL’s 2nd wild card spot with 7 games remaining. It was a historic day for the franchise as the previous record for consecutive wins was 14 set by the 1935 club. This is just the 3rd MLB team since 2000 to win 15+ consecutive games.

"It's hard to do something in this organization that's never been done, as historic and rich with tradition and success that this organization has," manager Mike Shildt said. "What I love about it is, it speaks to the team aspect of it."

The 15 wins in a row are tied for the fourth-longest streak in MLB history. Another victory against the Cubs on Sunday will tie St. Louis with the 1977 Kansas City Royals for the third-longest win streak. The 2017 Cleveland Indians won 22 games in a row while the 2002 Oakland Athletics won 20.

The Cardinals were down 4-2 going into the seventh inning but put up three in the seventh and three more in the ninth to seal the deal. The win was aided by an unusual 3-2-5-4-2-8-6 double play in the eighth as the Cubs had the tying run at third base before running themselves out of the inning.

Tyler O’Neill hit his 32nd HR of the season and 11th HR in September. Harrison Bader was 4-5 with a HR, 2 RBI, and 2 SBs. Paul DeJong hit his 19th HR of the season and added 3 RBI. The win was the 19th of September for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals will go for the sweep of the Cubs today at Wrigley Field at 1:20 pm CT. Jake Woodford gets the start for the Redbirds opposite Keegan Thompson.

In news about another team other than the Cardinals, the Yankees won their second straight in Fenway. Big GS for Stanton. And Severino appears back in form.

I’m a Mets fan, but appreciate this Yankee team. Seems to be again coming together (season has been up and down).

There was a time this series and division was going to produce the 2nd wild card.

Perhaps in a race with Scherzer*, DeGrom is probably the best righty of the teens and early 20s. It is a shame we haven't seen him more in the post season.

*Others might chime in with Greinke or Verlander.

Braves won a crazy game in San Diego last night coming from behind 3 separate times. They tied it up in the 9th and won it in the 10th to match the Phillies win earlier in the day.

Braves have a 1.5 game lead with one more in San Diego before an off day on Monday and then the big 3 game set with Philly starting Tuesday.

As others have said the NL East looks very likely to come down to that series. Should be fun!
