Duke is #1 seed in their bracket, playing #4 seed UNC-Greensboro first. Duke is 42-10 overall, ranked 17th in the Coaches Poll and 12th in the RPI. UNC-G is 34-15 overall, unranked in the Top 25 Coaches Poll and 95th in the RPI. UNC-G won their last 8 games including the Southern Conference Tournament with a 9-4 win over Western Carolina including a record 6 home runs in the championship game.
This is Duke's first-ever NCAA appearance, seeded #13 nationally. Duke has never played UNC-G except for an unofficial fall game in 2019. It will be interesting to see who is the Duke starting pitcher... Payton St. George was the ACC All-Tournment MVP with a season record of 18-6 and ERA of 2.02, or Shelby Walters who was 17-3 with a 1.30 ERA. Walters usually starts game 1 in weekend series but St. George is able to pick up in relief and/or start the second game.
Duke hitting is highlighted by Deja Davis with a .405 season average and Jameson Kavel at .339... both first-team All-ACC selections, as were St. George and Walters. UNC-G is lead by four .300 hitters (Matthijs, Willis, Brown and Palmer) and a healthy .280 team batting average. Their top pitcher is Morgan Scott who posted a 20-7 record and 2.10 ERA. Their second pitcher is Alina Varga at 8-0 but with a 4.11 ERA.
Let's Go Duke!!
Must spread sporks but thanks for the informative breakdown. LGD!
Q "Why do you like Duke, you didn't even go there." A "Because my art school didn't have a basketball team."
