    Agree 100%
It might be niavety, perhaps the eternal optimism after having been cooped up and denied in person sport, or the reality of a mobile quarterback as the glacier crawls westward.

    Bring it on

    Let’s Go Duke

Last year was the most bizarre year on many fronts. We had more NFL draft choices from last year’s team than about ever, yet our worse record in over a decade. We supposedly had quality defensive players, but got trounced repeatedly. We had a highly anticipated quarterback who by any measure had a terrible year. Our head coach who by reputation is an offensive guru who doubled as offensive coordinator had a terrible year. Hell, even our vaunted basketball team didn’t make the NCAA tournament. So I am going to be optimistic that things will be better this coming season, because they really could hardly be worse than last year.

Sorry budwom, I'm with them (and our exemplar Ozzie of course.) We may be tipsy on optimism & anticipation, and we may require anger management therapy as the season progresses, but we've got the (right) 'tude.

Assuming our passing game is improved, I believe SR Jake Bobo will be a much bigger factor this season.

well, I sure hope you're right, but our defense got absolutely gutted, we're breaking in a new QB (again) so anything beyond three wins is going to be a bonus (IMO).

Count me in. I think there is a very reasonable argument that we should be better on offense next year, with a mobile (albeit inexperienced) QB, a stronger O-Line and, hopefully, better health and consistency from our other skill position guys. I expect big things from Durant, and think there is plenty of talent in the receiving corps. Noah Gray will be missed, to be sure, but we rarely took full advantage of his talents, and Marwede may be ready for a breakout year.

Lots of question marks on defense, of course. But we are in good shape on special teams, at least in terms of our kicking specialists, which never hurts.

Agree with Budworm. These posts remind me of the “Wait till next year” crowd and kind of like the Groundhog Day movie. Guess I’ve followed Duke football too long and can’t shake reality.

Our defensive problems last year can partially blamed on our offense putting them in bad positions, thanks to (way too many) turnovers and inability to sustain drives. Yes, we lost some good defensive players, but maybe if our offense improves, the drop off on defense won’t be terribly bad.

    Cautiously optimistic. 🤞

I thought last year was the most lackluster effort I can remember from a Duke team. COVID, campus shutdown, whatever. I look forward to a better year this year.

On offense we simply lack playmakers other than Durant, who is a good one. To score points, you need go-to guys, and other than Durant, we have none.

On the defensive side, we lost a lot via graduation (those things happen) but we also lost three would-be leaders via transfer to bigger programs, and this shouldn't happen...

Just to be clear, I'll still travel a long distance for most of the games, but the rhythm of the program now simply isn't good, as much as I'd love to say otherwise. But hope springs eternal, let's see what we can do.

I think Bobo, Calhoun, Harding, Garner and Pancol have all shown flashes of playmaking ability. But their opportunities have arguably been limited by the glaring lack of accuracy by our starting QBs the past two seasons - even the best WRs need a QB who can consistently put the ball in catchable spots. Not saying that any of the Duke contingent are superstars, but there is talent there. And fingers crossed that Marwede makes a big jump with more PT.

Of course, the jury is certainly out on how accurate Holmberg will be. But I have a hard time imagining how he won't be at least a modest upgrade over than Brice or Harris in that respect.

Lots of reasons to be optimistic! Best reasons: we’ll all be there to root them on in person!

I agree with budwom. There are too many unknowns to be optimistic: quarterback, offensive line, defensive line, assistant coaches coaching new positions. This is looking like a three or four win season. Hope I am wrong.

The case for Duke becoming bowl eligible next season starts with Holmberg and/or Diamont being significant upgrades over Chase Brice, especially in the area of ball security, a healthy Wohlabaugh at C and moving Barton to LT upgrading the OL, better play-calling and multiple young players stepping up on defense, especially defensive line.

It could happen. But lots of qualifiers. Lots. I'd put the O/U on wins at 4.5 and that's assuming a 3-1 start in OOC play. Lose to Kansas and it could get ugly in a hurry. Upset Northwestern and start 4-0 and something special might be going on.

But Duke has to use September to answer these and other questions in the affirmative.

Are the players back on campus yet? Can the coaches work with the players in early summer? Clearly lack of practice was a huge impediment to having any success last season.

I see that the Duke Football Freshmen have been on campus for about a week:

I am in agreement with Bob (what's new). To be quite honest, this is the most uncertainty to a new season in about 10 years. Just way too many question marks. That isnt necessarily a bad thing. Last season's team grossly underachieved relative to the talent on the field. Chase Brice was simply a swing and miss. I think some of the better players on defense saw the writing on the wall.

We could be legitimately good this season. We could also be in the midst of a rebuild. Who knows right now. Just way too many question marks. Im not going to try to talk down the optimists, but im not there yet.

I respect that...really. But to quote a fellow optimist, "bring it on" and let's see what transpires, good or bad. Either way, I'll be along for the ride. However (and at the risk of being melodramatic), I won't be taking Duke football or much of anything else for that matter for granted as a result of the last year or so. In other words, I'll be enjoying the season no matter the outcome.

If you prefer not to receive "the trinket," I can take care of that for you.
