Is it just me, or is Springer $150m for 6 years a really good deal for the Blue Jays? I thought he might be more like a $240m for 8 years type player? Is it just a very soft free agent market, or are people concerned about Astros cheating inflated numbers? I wish my Nats had been in at $150/6.

He's not young (31), and can be expected to be sliding down that aging curve. The first year or two of his contract will be fine, but after that? I'm glad the Nats stayed away from him.

Rendon (who is a year younger) got $245/7 last year, so I though Springer would be a lot closer to his $35m per year mark, even if fewer years. Rendon is a better player but I still like Springer at $25m per year through his age 37 season.

Of course, they then proceeded to miss the post season in 2007 losing a play-in game to the Rockies (remember Rocktober?) and did not get back to the playoffs until 2020.

It’s been a long wait for the organization to commit to putting a contending team on the field, but wow have they made moves to do that now. First they got the line-up in place, anchored by Tatis Jr. and Machado, and now they’ve bolstered the rotation by adding Snell and Darvish. I sure hope we are back in Petco in force by August.

Also, San Diego Stadium (formerly SDCCU Stadium, formerly the Q, formerly the Murph) will leave the world the way it came in: without a namesake or sponsor. It was a great tailgate environment and a fun place to watch games (the Charger’s OT playoff win over Peyton Manning’s Colts a decade or so ago was the only time I have been somewhere louder and more crazy that Cameron), but it is now a broken down dump with no luxury seating. Life moves on, I suppose. Hopefully one day we’ll have an MLS team to call it home.
As a Dodgers fan, I think the Padres with Snell and Darvish added to the rotation look very formidable. There are some seriously loaded teams in baseball.

But Rendon was two years younger when he signed that deal.

If Springer was 29 instead of 31, maybe he gets a deal for 7 or 8 years instead of 6. And would have gotten more per year due to having two more years of the contract in his prime.

COVID worked out pretty well for Trevor Bauer.

Bauer deal with Dodgers, per @Feinsand: $102M for three years, with opt outs after first and second year. Salaries: $40M in first year, $45M in second.

Must think the DH is here to stay in the NL, I guess? Big bat but . . . .

I think they know the DH is going away but had no other choice at this point. He doesn't have to be great in the field, just adequate.

Had to have him and look at the numbers. Seems to be a pretty team friendly deal.

A great deal for the Braves, especially if the DH comes to the NL. If I were a betting person, I'd bet that it does happen before long but not this season. I was hoping my Cardinals would sign him but alas, they had to settle for Nolan Arenado, Gold Glove winner and good hitter. Maybe not as good a hitter as he was in Colorado, but I think he will be fine. They still need another bat. The Dodgers getting Bauer sets up a good NL West pennant race, with the winner probably the odds on favorite to win the World Series.

The Cardinals didn't "settle" for Arenado over Ozuna (who was terrible when he wore the birds on the bat).

He hit pretty dang well in the playoffs that year vs the Braves. But yea, he had an underwhelming season.

Also, Arenado has the worrying home splits to go along with a HUGE contract. At this point I’d take Ozuna , especially considering they didn’t have to trade for him.

Once again it's time for the Tigers to give an unconscionably large contract to some dolt who's well over the hill and limps.

I'll happily play the dolt in this case.

Does anyone here know the words to the Yankees' theme music? They created the song circa 1966 or 67, when they were terrible (10th place in '66, 9th in '67, 5th in '68!) but I listened to most games on the radio as a 12 (or 13) year old. The first year they played the words, after that, never, although they still use the music before and after broadcasts.
    We love the ... Yankees!
Shout it out loud we love the Yankees!
    And we're gonna win today!
    There's a lot more but that's all I remember

I don't recall the song, but I do recall the days when Mel Allen would announce with a Ballantine beer in front of him and some nice beer foam on his upper lip. And who knew Mel went to Bama?

Mickey would hit a Ballentine Blast, and then join Mel and the boys for a few after the game!

As a huge Yankees fan, that was one of the theme songs of my youth (primarily in the 1980s). They generally didn't play it with the lyrics on WPIX (channel 11, with Rizzuto, White, Messer and some others doing the games). Initially I sang the song with the lyrics "Yankees, they had Babe Ruth" repeated over and over to fit the tune. Not sure why.

As noted further up in the thread, these types of songs bring back many happy childhood memories of time spent with my baseball-obsessed dad. He was a Giants fan living in Brooklyn in the 40s and 50s - Bobby Thomson's home run was the happiest moment of his childhood - we listened to the Russ Hodges call of "the Giants win the pennant" over and over.

I guess I should have put a after the settle part. I was being cute. As for Ozuna, I would only want him on the Card's roster if the DH is in play. He didn't have to worry about his terrible defense last season because of the DH rule. I still think the Cards need another bat and even another pitcher. With the short season last year, pitchers didn't get stretched out innings wise. I think teams need 6 starters on their roster. Of course some of the bullpen can serve that role. Like Carlos Martinez and Alex Reyes.
