This is an optional claimer, with at least on worthy horse in there.
Prevalence broke his maiden by 8.5 with a 94 Beyer.
There is another colt who won by 4 3/4 in his only outing with an 88 Beyer.

But opportunities to get KYD points are running out. Perhaps they are looking at the Preakness.

Prevalence won this race easily, by 3 lengths; the time was OK for a mile race.

Bridgejumpers in the show pool (fun to watch for).

The trainer said that, assuming the horse comes back OK, the next step would likely be either the Arkansas Derby, Wood Memorial, or the Blue Grass Stakes.
Note that this horse is owned by Godolphin, so a race like the Blue Grass would cause him to run against Essential Quality (also owned by Godolphin).

    Rebel 2021

This weekend's road to the KYD takes us back to Arkansas for the Rebel Stakes:
    http://www.brisnet.com/php/bw_pdf_vi...param3=1756249

We have a significant group of horses that will be competing for the top honors.
    The 3 standouts are:
Keepmeinmind (by surprise stallion Laoban), who won the Kentucky Juvenile Cup (last November) after finishing 3rd in the BC Juvenile. However, attempts to start his 3YO campaign earlier this year have been thwarted by bad weather or timid ownership/trainers.
Caddo River (by Hard Spun): a Brad Cox trainee who has won his last 2 by boxcar margins, but has the rail.
Concert Tour: the only undefeated, and most lightly raced of the the 3. By the best of the sires (Street Sense).

Concert Tour and Keepmeinmind lose 3 lbs from their last race, while Caddo River picks up 7 l
bs! The conditions of the race depend on when and what distance horses started at. Not sure why this isn't a more equitable pairing for these horses on the derby trail. This is a 1 1/16 mile race.
Keepmeinmind has been at Oaklawn Park training for months, while Caddo River (Fair Grounds) and Concert Tour (Santa Anita) ship in from more exotic locale's.

Keepmeinmind might need the race to get into better shape. It isn't obvious if there will be moisture in the track. Keepmeinmind looks to be the only horse that has been training in less than ideal conditions. The other two horses have races under their belts.

Here is a view of the Rebel from Horseracingnation:

Also at Oaklawn Park on Saturday:

Shedaresthedevil, will make her 4YO debut in the Azeri:

She will be in against the very fast Letruska.

A couple of other interesting races today (Saturday 3/13/2021).

The Beholder Mile at Santa Anita. Swiss Skydiver makes her debut for the year.
    http://www.brisnet.com/php/bw_pdf_vi...param3=1341944
This filly didn't start off too great, but once she got in shape, she was soooo tough.
Her connections entered her against the toughest horses of her age, and not just the fillies.
She finished 2nd in the Blue Grass Stakes to a fit Art Collector, and she WON THE PREAKNESS.
After a long campaign, she finished 7th to an older monster Monomoy Girl, but that should take nothing away from this GREAT 3YO filly who had 10 starts in just over 10 months. Hats off to her owners who put this filly in a position race and win.
Swiss Skydiver, and her connections, were awarded the Eclipse Award for the top 3YO Filly in a VERY deep year (e.g., Shedaresthedevil, Gamine).
She is the last horse to beat Authentic in a race.
She is in against a top filly in Harvest Moon, who finished 4th in that BC Distaff race against Monomoy Girl. Harvest Moon was also a 3YO last year, but didn't have the long campaign or competition that Swiss Skydiver did.
This is a mile race and Harvest Moon's best races are at a mile; Swiss Skydiver's has not raced at a mile since last January (and she lost).

The top sprinters are racing in the Hot Springs Stakes at Oaklawn Park.
The top Male Sprinter (winner of the Eclipse Award) Whitmore, will be entered:
    http://www.brisnet.com/php/bw_pdf_vi...param3=1596590
In the race is the always fast C Z Rocket.
These 2 horses finished One/Two in the BC Sprint last year. The race will be at the same 6f. (not 9f !).

    Great day of racing.

In the premier event of the day, Concert Tour gave Bob Baffert his 8th win in the Rebel Stakes:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
The colt pulled away in the stretch and was only touched once, to keep his mind on business.
I haven't seen a Beyer figure on the race, but the horse was not pressed so it doesn't matter.
Keepmeinmind and Caddo River were also rans.

But yesterday was a day for the Devil. Daredevil to be precise. The young sire Daredevil, whose first crop was 2YOs last year, had two of his top fillies come back in grand style yesterday.

Swiss Skydiver destroyed a group of older mares in the Beholder Mile, earning a 101 Beyer:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
Here is the video of the stretch run:
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1370894394522365952
In the words of her trainer, Ken McPeek, "She breathes different air." Great Quote.
He also trained the dam of the second place horse, the exquisitely bred mare by American Pharoah out of million dollar winner Take Charge Lady (out of Dehere for you basketball fans), who also produced two million dollar winners (i.e., Take Charge Indy, Will Take Charge - both producing studs).

Then there was Daredevil daughter Shedaresthedevil, who had a more formidable challenge in taking on Letruska, winning by a head in a real battle:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    Here is the video:
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1370829837162532865

In the Hot Springs rematch of last year's BC Sprint, C Z Rocket beat Whitmore to avenge last year's defeat by a neck:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
Both horses stayed back in the pack, but Whitmore broke first while C Z Rocket chased and eventually caught Whitmore for the win.

There was a very notable debut on Saturday at Santa Anita. Triple Tap, the half brother to American Pharoah, out of Tapit, won his first start under wraps:
    https://www.horseracingnation.com/ne...anta_Anita_123
    He is a 3YO.

Saturday 3/20/2021 is Looosieana Derby time:

It looks like the same cast of characters back to race in the bayou:
    http://www.brisnet.com/php/bw_pdf_vi...param3=1980580
Mandaloun is the most recent winner of this round robin. Proxy was 2nd, and Midnight Bourbon 3rd.
Previously, Midnight Bourbon won, so perhaps it is Proxy's turn.
Hot Rod Charlie comes in from the coast, after finishing a neck behind Medina Spirit in his first start of the campaign; might rate a looksee.

In the filly division, there is the Fair Ground Oaks, where Clairere is the returning winner.
    http://www.brisnet.com/php/bw_pdf_vi...param3=1839110
Undefeated (2 times) filly Zaajel has the inside post. Travel Column seemed short and lost the lead to Clairere last time out.
This could be a competitive race.

At Aqueduct, they are running the Cicada for 3YOF at 6f:
    http://www.brisnet.com/php/bw_pdf_vi...29&param3=1620
Salt Plage and Irish Constitution will vie for favoritism.

The Dubai World Cup is also this Saturday. Jesus Team is in the desert to lead them.

OK, the result that you've all been waiting for.. Find New Roads finished dead last in his maiden race attempt. So much for him.

In the Louisiana Derby, Hot Rod Charlie took to the front early in the race and did not look back to win:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
The California invader better established that the California contingent will be strong this year. Hot Rod Charlie established a 99 Beyer.
IMHO, Proxy had an excuse; he was going to the front but was cut off badly and lost quite a bit of ground getting crunched. Midnight Bourbon was OK for 2nd. Mandaloun was a no-show. O'Besos was just a show.

If you are looking for all of the Beyer Figure values for this year's winners, check out this list from the Daily Racing Form which seems to be updated often.
    https://www1.drf.com/drfLeaderBoard.do?category=beyer

Travel Column was clearly the best in the Fair Grounds Oaks. With Clairiere a distant 2nd.
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
Travel Column is a gorgeous daughter of Frosted. If you've ever seen a grey/roan horse with black trim, you know what I mean; ugh!
Frosted's foals are now 3YOs and are starting to show their stuff. A 90 Beyer for Travel Column, who was not pushed.
Zaajel finished 6th, but OK for a 2nd lifetime start.

In the Cicada, Just Read It won the race. Only 4 entrants. You know, they have these races where the horses with the most favored odds run last. That was this race. With 4 horses, you can't blame traffic. This game will kill you.
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on

    Time for a slight digression:
Raise your hand if you remember Rachel Alexandra? OK, you can ALL put your hands down.
We all know that Rachel Alexandra was one of the great race mares of all time, but her breeding career has been somewhat sad to say the least.
Her first foal was Jess's Dream (2012); the colt won, and was 1 for 1 and was retired due to lameness in his right rear leg. They hoped he would race again, but they didn't want to risk it.
Her second foal was Rachel's Valentina (2013); this filly raced 6 times (won 2, placed 2) and won over $700K!

Fast forward to Louisiana Derby Day 2021...
On the card at the Fair Grounds yesterday was a filly (Eileen Alexandra) by Jess's Dream (already a winner) in Race 1, The Crescent City Oaks Stakes race.
Also trying to break his maiden in Race 2 at FG was Alejandro, the only foal of Rachel's Valentina.
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
This was Alejandro's 4th start, and he finished 1st, but was DQ'd. He will be a winner soon.
The point is that the great mare, Rachel Alexandra had no more foals. In giving birth to Rachel Valentina, there were complications that would make it risky for Rachel Alexandra to give birth again (and there is no surrogate parenting allowed for embryos in TBred racing). So the decision was made not to breed Rachel Alexandra again. She is understandably precious to her owners (and the sport).
We wish luck to the progeny of Jess's Dream and Rachel Valentina and hope to track them.

Ultra important update to the KYD scene:

Life Is Good, the prohibitive top horse in the ratings going toward the derby, is OUT of the Derby.
    https://www.horseracingnation.com/ne...eeders_Cup_123

After a steller work on Saturday, he apparently started to walk funny. This is what the horse people are trained to observe.
Life Is Good will be examined and will be taken out of training out of an abundance of caution.

He will be pointed toward the BC Classic if all goes well.

Shades of Nadal and Charlatan. Top trainers work their young horses hard, and the ones who are talented and strong enough to survive this process have the Right Stuff. This is a loss for all of us, but we hope to see him again later this year.

KYD Future Pool #5 is Out:
    http://www.brisnet.com/php/bw_pdf_vi...&param3=757875
I think this is the last pre-Derby pool as we are less than 40 days from the first Saturday in May.

A heads up article on races this coming weekend:
    https://www.horseracingnation.com/ne...ded_stakes_123

This includes the big prep race, the Florida Derby.
I noted some interesting side notes related to Florida Derby day.
They used to run races of non-racing breed animals on that day:
    https://pbs.twimg.com/media/ExLmVEiV...g&name=360x360

Racing Tigers. Ben Galley vs. Bengali Salley. Winner by a fang!

    https://twitter.com/TallmanGordon/st...410560/photo/1

    Harvey Wallbanger the Racing Buffalo
Usually against a horse (with a handicap).

In fact, the Standardbreds did something similar on Hambletonian Day.
They used to run Ostrich races, with small sulkies/carts hitched to Ostriches. Winner by a beak!

They also had a race called the Elephantonian where they had 2 elephants, hitched to wagons race each other. Winner by a trunk!

And one evening at the Meadowlands, when DevilHorse was in attendance, while one of his steeds was racing. Harvey Wallbanger himself appeared and put in an exhibition race. He was given his own paddock, right by where the horses were paddocked and dressed. He was calm. I watched him get saddled up. He was immense and a bit tough to control. It was quite a sight.

The Florida Derby is this weekend at Gulfstream Park:
    http://www.brisnet.com/php/bw_pdf_vi...param3=2008874

Greatest Honour will be your post time favorite. He has won 3 in a row and has been flawless at Gulfstream Park in December. Will he bounce (handicapping theory/term)? Will a new shooter develop? He is certainly the class of this field.
Spielberg ships east to join this race; he has shown to be resilient and throws in a surprise now and then. The California shippers also are strong.

    https://www.horseracingnation.com/ne...d_analysis_123

The Jeff Ruby Stakes for 3YOC will also take place at Turfway Park. This used to be the Jim Beams or Jim Beams Spiral Stakes.
The top 3 colts from the Battaglia are back. That would be: Hush Of A Storm, Like The King, and Gretzky The Great.
As I remember, Gretzky The Great probably needed that race as a tightener; I look for a better effort from him.

    Dubai World Cup 2021

For those of you who want a warm-up for the day of NCAA basketball, the Dubai World Cup, and preliminaries is available.
At about 10am EST is the Dubai World Cup itself, and I found some free PPs:

    https://files.ontraport.com/media/d9...AAMVW6XQYWSTNA

I haven't found free PPs for the UAE Derby, which provides points for the KYD, but .. good luck with that:
    https://www.horseracingnation.com/stakes/UAE_Derby#

I did find a "form guide" which helps a little:

    I'll take #8 Panadol.

The UAE Derby was won by Rebel's Romance. The son of Dubawi won easily over Panadol and plenty of distance over the rest of the field.

The Dubai World Cup was won by Godolphin USA Entry Mystic Guide, who stalked the pace and took over mid-stretch. It was a warm day, and although the race was contested at night, 2 of the horses in World Cup "freaked" for lack of a better description, before the race got started. One threw his jockey (Franki Detoree . perhaps the world's top jockey) as the horses walked onto the track, and another just as they were being loaded into the gate, the horse broke through the front of the gate, threw the jockey off, and ran for the hills. Obviously both horses were disqualified. The owners lost their chance at their portion of the $12M purse, and money was refunded. This was a black eye on racing and really curious. I don't know what was going on, nor do I know what the drug testing regimen is in Dubai, but it is unusual for experienced horses to behave this way (let along 2 in one race). It is more likely for babies in their first experience at the track or in a starting gate. What was going on? I don't expect there to be an inquiry, nor anyone to ask real questions. JMHO.

In KYD feeder races yesterday, there were minor upsets:

In the Jeff Ruby Steaks (spelled correctly), luke warm favorite Tarantino was dead last at all the calls due to a problem at the start. Like The King let the speed duel form up front while he patiently waited toward the rear of the pack; then he picked off his opponents one by one and took down the laurels by 1 length, with Drayden Van Dyke at the helm (payed 7 to 1).
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on

In the Florida Derby, the King is dead, long live the King. Perhaps this is a tactic by Shug McGaughey to teach Greatest Honour how to come from behind, but it didn't work.
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
Third choice, Known Agenda, ridden by Irad Ortiz, was in better position and accelerated down the stretch to confidently win the FD.

On to the Wood Memorial next week. Another funky year leading to the derby. Essential Quality looks to be the head of the class for this crop at this juncture.

Forgot to mention that By George and Doctor K put in a nice speed duel and provided a nice opportunity for another horse run them down. Neither horse took home a check.

However, Bezos, the big money, big buzz, Baffert beauty, showed up, with his blinkers (extra points for 'B's) and trounced a nice field of 3YO's in his second lifetime start.
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
It will be interesting to see if he progresses.
This was an obvious betting angle (2nd time starter for Top Trainer, change of equipment). But then, there were a couple of other's in the field, like Fenway, with similar credentials. Look for There Goes Harvard and Fenway to break their maidens soon.

This weekend we are in the home stretch as we approach the KYD.
On tap is the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland. Unlike several years ago, the Keeneland racing surface has been returned to the more traditional mix of sand and clay and is no longer Polytrack. Polytrack was an 'experiment' that a number of tracks attempted because it offered better weather durability (because it was made of crushed tires [a.k.a., rubber], but it played a bit more toward turf than dirt).

The Blue Grass Stakes this year will have one big dog and a few pups:
    http://www.brisnet.com/php/bw_pdf_vi...param3=1667325

Essential Quality, an undefeated, and now default but deserving leader of the division, will be the odds-on favorite. He won the Breeder's Cup Juvenile on this racetrack! He has done nothing wrong. Except for the unfortunate injury to the brilliant Life Is Good, this colt would have been the overwhelming choice. But Essential Quality has done more. This horse is taking a similar progression that he took toward the BC Juvenile (before his winter break); 2 races and then the big one. This is the second race. His last race is NOT the highest Beyer in the race (belongs to Highly Motivated .. who lost). But this is a grand colt who should romp.

The next best horse should be Highly Motivated, who should greatly benefit from his loss in the Gotham to longshot Weyburn (who seems to be going directly to the KYD off of that win).

Essential Quality does not need the KYD points to get into the KYD; so best effort is not required and sometimes does not appear by eventual KYD winners the race before the KYD. That will make Highly Motivated a bit more attractive. One of the high priced horses we've been following, Rombauer, is also in the field. Hush Of A Storm deserves a mention, as he has won 3 in a row after a first try miss in his first pari-mutual start; but his performances would have to improve greatly to run with the likes of EQ.

Look for an EQ/HM exacta here though.

Also on the card is the Ashland for 3YOF. This is the prep for the Kentucky Oaks:
    http://www.brisnet.com/php/bw_pdf_vi...param3=1364175

I'd look for Malathaat over Simply Ravishing here.

The Wood and Santa Anita Derby

As mentioned in the previous post, we're a month away from the KYD and the biggest prep races on many of the paths to the Triple Crown will be culminating this weekend. In addition to the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland, we will have the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct:
    http://www.brisnet.com/php/bw_pdf_vi...param3=1313650

In the Wood we have a great field buzz horses. Weyburn, the latest horse on the buzz wagon will be tuning up. The Gotham winner will take on Risk Taking, the winner of the Withers, and Brooklyn Strong, the winner of the Remsen (back in November). Other competitive horses includes: Prevelance, an undefeated contender, coming out of conditions; Candy Man Rocket, who failed in the the Tampa Bay Derby after looking so good in the Sam F Davis; and Crowded Trade who was nosed out by Weyburn in the Gotham. All of these horses have pluses/minuses and will benefit from the race. You'll get favorable odds at whomever you pick. Brooklyn Strong has been working well, so I'll give him a chance.

The Santa Anita Derby, without Life Is Good, looks like Medina Spirit's race if he wants it. Dream Shake and Rock Your World are good and lightly raced.
    http://www.brisnet.com/php/bw_pdf_vi...param3=1341944

Beautiful Gift and Moraz go at it again in the Santa Anita Oaks:
    http://www.brisnet.com/php/bw_pdf_vi...param3=1006458

Search Results (yes, that's her name) looks good in the Gazelle (3YOF companion of the Wood):
    http://www.brisnet.com/php/bw_pdf_vi...param3=1182285

    Other notable races:

    At Aqueduct:
What used to be a shorter distance, but earlier in the sequence of derby prep races, The Bay Shore for 3YOs, has a visitor from the south.
Drain The Clock will take his front running speed to the Ozone Park Oval for the 7f race and will be odds-on:
    http://www.brisnet.com/php/bw_pdf_vi...&param3=525460

Also, the Carter Handicap looks like a really nice race for sprinters:
    http://www.brisnet.com/php/bw_pdf_vi...&param3=788190
Mischevious Alex moves back up north, to the site of his early big wins, to take on Chateau who won the Tom Fool Handicap.
Also in the field is Mind Control who only lost his last race to Sleepy Eyes Todd (last seen in $12M Dubai World Cup) and Firenze Fire (BC Sprint winner).
Shoplifted has shown a strong kick. It is a compact field of 5.
    Could be a competitive field

There were some impressive races yesterday.

In the Blue Grass Stakes, Essential Quality had a throw down with Highly Motivated.
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
Highly Motivated went to the front, and did not back up. Essential Quality stalked the pace and was all out, clawing into the lead throughout the stretch. Is this a sign that a tighter Highly Motivated will win out in the KYD? We will see. These two finished over 5 lengths ahead of Rombauer.
Your cold exacta was $3.60. Negative ROI on an Exacta Box.

The Wood Memorial had real fireworks.

There was a moderate pace, and many of the contenders jostled in a main pack at the front. One horse, Bourbonic, trailed by almost 10 lengths, by the head of the stretch, Bourbonic started to weed his way through horses and came home a 72-1 winner. Biggest payoff in Wood history.
The best quote I heard was, "I wouldn't pick this horse on the rerun." This was not a fast running.
Kendrick Carmouche handled the inspired ride.

In the Santa Anita Derby, Rock Your World, surprised Medina's Spirit with a front running win.

Rock Your World was making his first start on the dirt and is undefeated. He has a distance pedigree and won by 4 for John Sadler.

    Gamine

Just noticed that Gamine is entered for one of those "get 5% of your money" races. The 2nd race today at Santa Anita is the Las Flores Stakes.
    http://www.brisnet.com/php/bw_pdf_vi...520&param3=260
Yes, it is on the Stakes schedule but come on, if Gamine is ready, it is free money.
Are you ready for your bridge-jumper card?
This is the BC F&M Sprint Champion from the past year.

Now, Gamine could be barred from the betting, and with only 4 entries, there will be no Show betting, and perhaps no Place betting.
This should be a public work-out for a fast 6 furlongs.

But then, Lady's Secret went nuts as an older mare, so you never know.

    Some Beyers from the weekend:

    100 - Rock Your World
    97 - Essential Quality
    89 - Bourbonic (points for being 72-1)

    92 - Search Results # Gazelle
    89 - Malathaat # Ashland
    87 - Soothsay # Santa Anita Oaks

    109 - Mischevious Alex #Wow - Carter Handicap

Don't look for him in the gate at Churchill Downs in any Stakes races, yet.

    White Animals

A digression from the KYD arc of this Forum since some of you are SOB's (Soft on Beasts.. a.k.a., animal lovers).

As some of you may know, there is a mutation for albino-ism in mammals that occurs. It manifests itself in humans (Johnny Winter), the rare white buffalo of native american lore, and yes, the horse population. A standardbred was born in 2012, eventually named White Bliss, that had this mutation and had a very good pedigree but never amounted to more than an average race horse. I saw this horse in person, and he was striking to see (after he was washed). I believe he sold for $240K as a yearling; well in excess of his pedigree. And he will be bred!

I came across the following little video of a thoroughbred from Japan on twitter who just became a Grade I winner:
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1379747278156537862
Looking at her pedigree, it is all from imported U.S. horses to Japan. Watch the video and take note of pictures of her mother who is more than gorgeous if you like such things. Being able to pass this trait on is more than desirable/marketable.

In the standardbreds, there was nothing but bays, browns, chestnuts, and the occasional black horses 50 years ago. There was a minor sire named Smog who was grey, and then a stallion named Laag came along who was grey and a world record holder, and the complexion of the breed changed. There are lots of greys now in the breed, and you can find these horses in their pedigree. Laag was bred by a man named Albert Adams, who collected grey mares in an effort to breed a great grey, which he did. Laag's mare Tinsel was grey, and all of her tail female mares were grey as far back as I can trace. [Bonus Digression] Almahurst was at one time run by P. J. Baugh, who took one of the first Executive Education classes at the newly minted Fuqua School of Business.

In Thoroughbreds, more recently, Tapit is a grey. His dominance as a sire, and a sire of sires, is greying the breed in a good way. Your Kentucky Derby favorite this year will be the grey son of Tapit, Essential Quality.
