Life Is Good had a modest workout going, until another horse came beside him at Saratoga yesterday, then the colt took off; after the finish line, he just kept on going. It was a very impressive effort to those who watched. He will be targeting a race on Travers day or the Smarty Jones (these are shorter distance.. the Travers are too long for a comeback effort).

This weekend, the big race is the Jim Dandy (named after the surprise long shot winner of the Travers long ago).
Essential Quality will be using this race as the tune-up for the Travers:
    http://www.brisnet.com/php/bw_pdf_vi...param3=1509687
Also entered will be Weyburn and Dr. Jack who did well in the Pegasus against Mandaloran at Monmouth a month ago.
EQ is not a workout warrior, so don't read into that, but Saratoga is the Graveyard of Champions.

The Alfred Vanderbilt (remember Biltmore house NC??) for sprinters has drawn Mischevious Alex, Firenze Fire, Whitmore, and Special Reserve:

    A great race!

At Del Mar, the track built with the leadership of Bing Crosby's Thoroughbred Track Club, is the Bing Crosby Handicap:
    http://www.brisnet.com/php/bw_pdf_vi...param3=1374280
C Z Rocket and (the recently missing) Dr. Shivel are entered.

Earlier on the card at Del Mar is a first time starter named Astronomer. Not sure if that should be in the astronomy thread or here???

Race 3 at Del Mar by Air Force Blue. The Air Force Blue 2YOs were a revelation last year. Will that continue this year?

Essential Quality won the Jim Dandy in a return to the races. Given a ride that was just as horrendous as he got in the KYD, he was about 5 wide on the first turn and about 6 wide on the final turn (that is hard to do). And still he managed to gut it out over Keepmeinmind with a rail skimming trip.
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
He'll be sharper for the Travers, but going the extra distance a wide trip like this demands comes back to bite you like it did in the KYD.

The Vanderbilt went to longshot Lexitonian:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
This horse was scratched out of last year's race when he freaked in the gate. This horse went to the front and fought the whole way.
The favorites didn't fire, or their jockeys expected the early speed to come back to them (which they didn't).

In the Bing Crosby, Dr. Shivel is at it again, coming from behind, slicing through, to win:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
Dr. Shivel was taking on older company, and is lightly raced (this being only his 2nd 3YO race). Nice race for Eight Rings.
C Z Rocket got into it too late.

I normally think of Saez as an elite rider, but what is he doing to EQ? I will not be surprised to see Cox replace him. Why would any jockey keep a horse so wide in a five horse race, unless the inside was terrible going. I didn’t see the race but I’m guessing the track was fair. Certainly the Ortiz brothers and most any of the best jocks in the country would give better rides.

Unless he was TOLD to keep EQ to the outside and out of trouble. Only Saez and Cox know for sure. But in a 5 horse race that is over a mile? Come on! I agree. Something is fishy.

At Saratoga, Jackie's Warrior cleaned Drain The Clock's clock in the Amsterdam. The race was delayed by a toad floater of a storm that drenched the track. The wise guys knew this would benefit JW's breeding and form over DTC.. of course.. NOT. Both speedy colts are by Maclean's Music. Frankly, I couldn't see why they thought JW was the obvious choice, but they did and they were right. I didn't see the show live so I did not benefit from the before the race comments.

Jackie's Warrior was clearly the best.

At Del Mar, Shedaresthedevil waited for her queue and then blew out the competition. She was clearly the best.

I see Baffert’s horse was a low odds second favorite and did basically nothing. I’m still on the road and unable to watch or read much about horse racing, but are Baffert’s horses underperforming now? Glad to see Cox and a regular Kentucky jockey, by way of France, take a big race at Del Mar. I went to Del Mar once and was quite frankly underwhelmed at the so called beauty. It sits on what looks to be a fairgrounds. To me like most tracks it looked like a place that had seen better days. Yep the view of the ocean is pretty, but the view of the horse farms at Keeneland is lovelier in my opinion. I’ve never been to Saratoga but it looks lovely too.

I’m watching Baffert’s horses closely as I assume they are running clean right now, due to his recent indiscretions. We’ll see how they perform over the next few months.

Indeed it will be interesting to watch the Baffert horses as they have different trainers. You have to give them a few starts in the new barn so they can figure out what works. It is the same for claimers as it is for great horses; new trainers don't get the 'secrets' from the old trainers.

I've been to Saratoga (Thoroughbred and Harness.. just a couple of blocks from each other) and I've been to Keeneland and Churchill Downs. Saratoga is by far the oldest and looks the part. They seats, if not refurbished since I was there, were rickety with very little room for a 6 footer like me. The sight lines were not great (I had seats up the track and guessed wrong as to who was in front), but the beauty of the surroundings made up for it. Wonderful atmosphere. I can tell that lots of work has been done at the Spa since I was last there.

Keeneland is much more modern, with more of a spread in front, with ease of access to the grandstand from the front of the track. I attended a big auction of yearlings from behind the backstretch there; it was very nice. Big pavillion. The area is rolling hills. Versailles is beautiful. The KY horse farms are majestic. They are wonderful!!

Churchill Down is a showcase; big and clean. It is a museum wherever you step. Lots of space and spiers. It reminded me a lot of Belmont as to the size and spiffiness of it. Saratoga felt a lot more 'country' as did Keeneland. CD is in the heart of Louisville, so that contributed to that feeling.

    Just a couple of notes:

Midnight Bourbon has had his first workout since his Haskell mishap. That is great to see. 4f in 51.48. Obviously the health checks out to the eye.

Maxfield will be running this weekend in the Whitney, and will be opposed by the great Swiss Skydiver!

Bob Baffert will have his first NY starter (Illuminations) since the KYD this Saturday in the Test Stakes for 3YOF. You can bet she will be as clean as a maiden
More here, with an interesting perspective on things from the owner of the filly that will be racing in NY.

This friday, there is an interesting race at Saratoga. The Alydar:
    http://www.brisnet.com/php/bw_pdf_vi...param3=1341944
A couple of familiar names here.
Art Collector and Jesus Team. Art Collector, who made some noise as he approached the Triple Crown trail last year with a late undefeated streak, but faultered against the big boys (Authentic) and girls (Swiss Skydiver).
Jesus' Team got big checks, but not the big enchilada last year. He did well in the middle east this year, but did not appear to recover yet in his return to the states.
Math Wizard and Night Ops will round out the majority of the betting interest. Who will break out? Who knows!

On Saturday, a great collection of horses for the Whitney:
    http://www.brisnet.com/php/bw_pdf_vi...param3=1677430
Maxfield, Knicks Go, By My Standards, Silver State, and Swiss Skydiver that's it! Those 5. What a tough race.
Knicks Go will set the pace; the others will be various shades of stalkers. Who will show up in good form and the best versions of themselves.
Knicks Go and Maxfield have the best upside. This race has been won by a filly (5 lb weight allowance) only when the male entrants have been weaker. But Swiss Skydiver has won the Preakness. Silver State will need to step up, but has won 6 in a row dating back till a year ago March.

There will be the Test Stakes for 3YO fillies:
    http://www.brisnet.com/php/bw_pdf_vi...param3=1341944
Will Zaajel return to sanity or will Search Results return to top form?

At Del Mar, the Best Pal for 2YOs will be run without the best 2YO (Big City Lights) in training there:
    http://www.brisnet.com/php/bw_pdf_vi...param3=1236852
Any of these horses could win this.

And of course, the Hambletonian will be run at the Meadowlands. In its' present form, only one heat of a mile will be run on Saturday.
I'm rooting for Captain Corey, a son of pacing bred Goo Goo Gaagaa (who has been exported).
This will be a rare afternoon card that harkens back to the fair roots of the sport.
Trotting and Pacing are both natural gaits of horses. There are no rules to prevent a pacer from entering trotting races and vice-versa; however, they are only allowed to participate in one gait type within one calendar year (I bet you didn't know that!); it saves on the psychiatrist bills for the horses and their trainers.

OK, so we talk about the world's great horses.
What about the those feel good worst horses?
Here is a horse named Celerity that has been a maiden through 105 races.
Yet their owners felt that as a 7YO, it was worth trying for a 106th time.
    Here is what happened:
    https://www.racingpost.com/news/race...haydock/504484

    Feel good?
Where do they race her now?

    Busy couple of days:

Art Collector won the Alydar easily:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
It was much easier than the 1.5 lengths suggests. It was mentioned on the broadcast that AC had some trouble in his first start back, but he is obviously over that now. Looking forward to seeing him challenge some of the big boys.
It was a delight to refresh my memory that Alydar won the Whitney at Saratoga as a 3YO as a prep for the Travers. I loved Alydar and had seen him in person twice. Once as a 2YO in the Hopeful (at Saratoga, losing to Affirmed), and again as a 3YO in the Remsen at Aqueduct (I cashed a nice ticket on Believe It). Alydar won the Travers that year on a disqualification on Affirmed for cutting him off on the backstretch. Alydar could only beat Affirmed by a DQ or by surprising him with a brush before Affirmed could react. But Alydar could outbreed Affirmed. You'd be surprised how many pedigrees he shows up in, although no sire line. They were related though genetically; Alydar was Affirmed's uncle. Alydar's sire Raise A Native was Affirmed's sire (Exclusive Native's) sire also. Alydar was killed for the insurance money in a scandalous episode from the bluegrass. But I digress.

Knicks Go is at the top of the division with a decisive win in the Whitney:
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1424127892687048705
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
He went to the front and dared the other horses to come and get him; he earned a 111 Beyer. Maxfield was second. I was waiting for Maxfield to fire on the turn and it never happened. Swiss Skydiver was overmatched, but it was mentioned that she might be using this race as a prep for the Personal Ensign down the line.. Ugh; so what's next, use the Kentucky Derby as a prep for the Pennsylvania Derby???

The Test Stakes was won by Bella Sofia:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
Bella Sofia is a rapidly developing filly with only a few starts. She looked great.

At Del Mar, the Best Pal was won by Pappacap:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
This colt won for fun under Jersey Joe Bravo. He shipped in for Mark Casse (father in law for Gabby Gaudet .. just for DevilMadeMeDoIt).
You don't usually see ship-ins to these California stakes races, so good to see.

And, in the $1M Hambletonian, Captain Corey was a monster!
    https://youtu.be/6xY2Lt9Tag0
He was pushed to a record 26.0 opening quarter, and was never given a breather.
Captain Corey, who is trained/driven by Ake Svanstadt (not one of the top drivers) was not going to give up the lead, and was good enough to ward off multiple challengers and remain standing at the end in 1:51.0. He paid $4.60 to the faithful.
Hambletonian was inbred to an English Thoroughbred who came to the USA named Messenger, who could trot a bit. There is a Messenger stakes too. The same Messenger can be found in the 13th rank of Secretariat's pedigree. So Messenger was some kind of horse. All Trotting and Pacing race horses descend from Hambetonian, that survive to this day, which is why he gets the BIG race!

We will end this note by paying homage to Steve Asmussen who broke the record for the most wins by a trainer in North America. He did this at Saratoga to full fanfare and with his family around him. It was quite a show.
    https://www.horseracingnation.com/ne...9sum%c3%a9_123
Steve, who burst onto the scene with such notables as Curlin, Rachel Alexandra (okay, so he took over after she showed she was the top 3YO filly), and Gun Runner, has been a detailed guy and is a dependable bet for first time starters for all of you punters out there. So we like Steve for that. He will continue to train for a long time to come, so like Mike Krzyzewski, he will set the bar for the next coach/trainer really high.

Your comments about Alydar caused me to look up some articles about the convicted crook, J T Lundy, who ran Calumet into the ground. It appears Alydar was fifteen when he was probably murdered. How many more years could he have sired horses? I remember the Alydar/Affirmed triple crown races well. It was a story book year, with a young Steve Cauthen riding Affirmed. Steve went on to greatness in Europe, before retiring fairly young as he was a tall boy for a jockey. Horse racing could sure use another rivalry like those two horses.

And thanks for the link to the 100 plus race maiden.

Finally, did you ever attend the Hambletonian when it was at Du Qouin, IL. Living about sixty miles away from there for most of my life, losing that race was a huge blow to that community.

Speaking of Southern Illinois, I may have one bit of horse race trivia that even you may not know. Here it is. The long shot Ky. Derby winner, Dust Commander was born about 20 miles north of Paducah, Ky. in Massac County, Illinois on a very non descritp farm. It’s about as far away from the blue blood farms of central Kentucky as you can get. Actually it’s about 275 miles from the bluegrass. I think the current owners grow corn and soybeans.

Steve Cauthen is alive and well and living in Kentucky, running a horse farm. I think when you said too tall, you meant too heavy , but that usually goes together for young men. I remember betting on Steve Cauthen (the kid) at Belmont when he had the bug. Included him on every daily double or exacta. Made me some money. Not in Affirmed/Alydar though. I just didn't learn.

No, I did not make it out to Du Quoin, but I was in the Winner's Circle for two Hambo's at the Meadowlands. That was fun. George Foreman was the presenter one year (No free grills unfortunately), but it was a great day. I met a lot of interesting people. Might I also mention that losing the Hambletonian (to DuQuoin) was a great loss to Goshen when it was moved from Good Time Park. The thinking was that moving the Hambo to the Meadowlands would increase the profile of the race and the sport. I'm not sure it has had the full effect, especially since the sport has suffered because of short sightedness in NJ politics and the proliferation of gambling options in society. The winner's circle for a big race is a different animal than for an overnight; but if it is your horse, the experience is a glow that you carry with you. I have a picture for every horse of mine that won a race. I was thinking how much it cost for Steve Asmussen for each of his 9446 wins at $20 to $80 a pop; where would you keep 10k photos??? But I digress.

Speaking of interesting races, I just watched the Adirondack at Saratoga for 2YO fillies:
    http://www.brisnet.com/php/bw_pdf_vi...param3=1341944
Was won by Wicked Halo by a ton, in a fast time. Her mother won this race 6 years ago. Evidently they look almost exactly alike ... beautiful greys with black trim (at this age at least). Asmussen gets another!! This one is worth watching.

    Some news for a Monday:

Here is an article taking a detailed look at the Whitney results:
    https://www.horseracingnation.com/bl...ey_results_123
Upshot is that Knicks Go was impressive and Maxfield has a long way to go to beat that one.

Mandaloun has a sore hoof and may miss all of the rest of the stakes this year.
    https://www.horseracingnation.com/ne..._sore_foot_123

The workout docket shows that Life Is Good and Midnight Bourbon had light work outs yesterday.

OK, so on Friday at Saratoga there is an interesting 2YO maiden filly race..
    http://www.brisnet.com/php/bw_pdf_vi...param3=1006458

It is restricted to NY Breds. Usually less competition since it is restricted, but in New York you only have to drop a foal there and you could be by any sire, so you could have some great sires and horses (remember Tiz The Law). A lot of first time starters, including by the omnipresent trainer Todd Pletcher with a homebred Into Mischief! A few bullet works. An Arrogate filly, who probably won't run until the clock strikes 'I'm 3 years old'!
But there's a horse named 'Sue Ellen Mishkin'. She was (apparently) an obscure character in a Seinfeld episode. She is owned by Gold Square Stable. Other starters owned/named by Gold Square included Maryanorginger (who has a 2yo sister in Saratoga 5th today), Wendell Fong (Fraser), Floyd Unger (Felix Unger’s brother), Fixedincome Larry and Free Chickens (Sue Ellen Mishkin's training partner at Saratoga). Gotta love the names!

    Saturday at Saratoga:

Another 2YO maiden race in the 6th:
    http://www.brisnet.com/php/bw_pdf_vi...param3=1006458
Pletcher has a first time starter who has been working smartly for this one. A Nyquist colt named Power Agenda. Good name!

An allowance race for you with some interesting horses in Saratoga's 8th:
    http://www.brisnet.com/php/bw_pdf_vi...param3=1341944
I took note of Defeater when he broke his maiden in January. He's had one other race, a fast closing second after a bad start; we'll see how he does.
The Pletcher entry from Shadwell stable is very good.
The 2 horse Meister is a first time Lasix and first time Gelding; a double betting angle.
Two other horses not mentioned won their last race. Should be a stakes quality race.

The Saratoga Special, for 2YO sprinters (how would they even know.. pedigree I guess) in the 9th race:
    http://www.brisnet.com/php/bw_pdf_vi...param3=1509687
Would you really bet on a horse named Glacial? I saw my Dr. Jeff yesterday so he is my hunch bet.

I'll not say anything about the Fourstardave (turf race)

but they are on the turf at Arlington Park for some big races tomorrow. Arlington Park which has a very murky future..

    they have the Beverly D:
    http://www.brisnet.com/php/bw_pdf_vi...&param3=919555
This race pits Mean Mary against Santa Barbara.

    and the Mr. D:
    http://www.brisnet.com/php/bw_pdf_vi...param3=1182285
Here we have the tough Domestic Spending against the come from behind artist Zulu Alpha.

There is also the Ellis Park Derby for 3YOs:
    http://www.brisnet.com/php/bw_pdf_vi...&param3=976143
Super Stock leads the field. Super Stock is owned by the elder Asmussen ( Steve's Dad) and was first ridden by Steve's son in his first 2 starts. Won a division of the Arkansas Derby and started in the KYD, and has been a fun horse for them.

It's a weird thing. I can copy link locations from Briswatch, the links work on the page, but they (obviously) don't work on these pages.
My other choice is to give the page, tell you were to find the link on the page. It is more work for you and me.
For each of these races, I have to search through the available Briswatch pages to find a pointer; it is an art.

Most of today's Saratoga links are found at these pages:

    Todd Pletcher:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
Go down to Sat August 14th

Arlington links are at this page:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
Chad Brown, also go down to August 14th.

I haven't figured out how to be more specific.

How about the pointers for the charts like this:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
Do they work?? <just tried it, and it works for me - DevilHorse>

    Sorry for the inconvenience.

Do people want a lesson/guide on finding free PPs on the internet? There is a large set of them out there, and I can find 95% of the stakes, 90% of the races at the major tracks, but I have a method to get there. It takes a little process to do it.

Sue Ellen Mishkin is a monster:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
She wasn't the favorite, but she won big yesterday.
The owner and trainer were interviewed afterwards and were delightful.

The horse was intended to be named after the Seinfeld character Sue Ellen Mishke:
    https://seinfeld.fandom.com/wiki/Sue_Ellen_Mischke
This is a fictional character. But we know that horses can't be named after real people without their permission. But what I learned yesterday was that the Jockey Club won't even let you name a horse after a real (apparently recent) person without the author's permission. The owner of SEM said he didn't feel like chasing after Larry David so he just changed Miscke to Mishkin and that was acceptable.
He owned another horse that he named Cleon Jones (for you Mets fans), and he did go and get Cleon Jones to sign off on that name.
This owner bred the horse to his mare. He loved the cross to Tapit, who only stands for $200k, which was out of his price range. So he went to a son of Tapit, Mohaymen, and he lucked out. Mohaymen, if you remember from 3 years ago, was on the KYD trail, but peaked before the KYD. But Mohaymen is having an excellent start to his stud career. With SEM, he is now 5 for 16 with first time starters; a very good mark.
The Arrogate filly in the field made that sire 0 for 7 with first time starters, but I don't think you can evaluate him till next year; remember Runhappy?

Power Agenda noses out Don't Wait Up in a contested 2YO maiden race:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
The Nyquist colt was very tough. Expect short odds on Don't Wait Up next time.

In the 8th race Allowance race, Speaker's Corner soundly beat Defeater:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
Defeater broke last and was off since the beginning of the year; I expect a top effort in his next start.

In the Saratoga Special, High Oak won:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
This son of Gormley (Malibu Moon) sports 3 crosses to Secretariat from his 3 major broodmare grandsons (AP Indy, Gone West, and Storm Cat). Owner Mike Francesca and his partners are enjoying perhaps their best Saratoga meet (JEH Stables).

At Arlington Park, Santa Barbara soundly beat Mean Mary in the Beverly D:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
The win paid $4 but the Exacta paid $3.70 yuch. this will give horse racing a bad name!!!

In the Mr D, Domestic Spending could not get it done:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
Long Shot Two Emmys was able to hold on and win at a huge price. A case of pace makes the race; you can't let a horse go in 1:16 at this level.
