Unless Godolphin is planning on shipping Maxfield to foreign shores, they have plenty of Street Sense blood (Maxfield's sire) in the U.S.A., so perhaps they would run him again next year. He's only lost 3 races out of 10, and yet he still placed/showed. Although, they do give Maxfield plenty of time between starts for this horse, so he gets very few starts per year. Horses peak at 5 or 6, so why not. And Knicks Go still looks like a monster. Perhaps Essential Quality is a bit better. So odd horse out.

Apparently Dr. Post and Happy Saver are also out of the BC. There's good money all over, so why race for nothing against the tigers when you can race for half or 3/4 of a $M when the big guys are at home. Could this mean some smaller fields in the BC?

A couple of minor races of interest this weekend:

At Keeneland, I noticed that Soup and Sandwich is running in the Perryville for 3YOs:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...5/summary.html
[Into Mischief URL above, Saturday Oct 23, Keeneland - Race 7, PPs]
When last we saw SnS he was finishing last in the KYD by 65 lengths (eased up). The lightly raced colt must have blown a tire. If he runs back to his best speed figure, he'll 'walk', but he probably needs a tightener. But this is a 7f race, and that 4f bullet workout looks good.

The Raven Run for 3YO fillies is being run, also at Keeneland:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...5/summary.html
[Into Mischief URL above, Saturday Oct 23, Keeneland - Race 9, PPs]
Souper Sensational and Cilla look like the class.

    Whatever Happened To ...

Do you guys care about horses that used to be on the KYD trail that faded away?

    For example:

Yesterday, Dennis' Moment won his first race in 2 years:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
The Dale Romans' trainee stalked the pace in an Optional Claimer ($62k) and took the lead in the stretch.
This horse was the winter book favorite for the 2020 KYD, but never returned to form.
He took two eight month vacations since his early success, but may have finally righted the ship.
He's only made half of his original $400k yearling price tag back (surely a ton more in stakes payments, trainer's fees, and what not).
Who knows if he'll have a stud career (he is a name).

Today, at Keeneland, another name popped up, Sole Volente'. He was a hot number going into last year's KYD:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...4/summary.html
[Hard Spun URL above, October 22, 2021, Keeneland - Race 8, PPs]
He was a come from behind horse in the mid to late Derby trail last year.
This race is the Sycamore on the Turf. There are lots of turf races with come from behind horses, like Sole Volente who has fallen on hard times.
But you need a strong pace if you are going to come from behind. You won't find it in this race, until you look at the last horse on the outside, #12.
Here you have the case of the lone speed, which makes that horse dangerous.
Two Emmys has taken the lead in 3 of his 4 last races and has been forwardly placed.

Soup and Sandwich went out for coffee when the running started in the Perryville:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
It was a dandy race when everyone was in contention and the race caller could hardly keep up in mid-stretch. He'smyhoneybadger closed fastest of all to win.

In the Raven Run Stakes, the fillies were fairly evenly matched:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
Caramel Swirl won this cavalry charge. Very good racing at Keeneland in full fields. Exciting endings.

    2022 KYD May 7

So, who are the contenders for the 2022 Kentucky Derby?

The first Saturday in November is just about half way from the when 2YOs first appear in maiden races to the KYD, but certainly not when most colts (and fillies) progress and mature in races. But we have a pretty good idea who some of the contenders are going to be:
    https://www.horseracingnation.com/p/...22_Contenders#

No doubt this list is going to get jumbled in a couple of weeks, but there is no reason why you can't pick out a few horses, trainers, and pedigrees to follow. Keeping in mind that there will be new shooters showing up all the time, fresh as a daisy, with their eyes on the prize.

May be an older list, but most contenders as of this date are in there.

    Stuff Happening

    There is stuff happening.

Not sure if I should mention it because of the format changes that are happening to the forums because the messages may not carry over.

The PPs for the Breeder's Cup are out.. well, sort of. The pre-entries are out for the races. But they are in alphabetical order, no odds, and no jockeys (yah, try racing horses with mechanical jockeys).

If someone wants to see some pre-entry PPs, I'll post pointers.

    Happy Holloween.

Horses will be going off to stud too, mostly after the BC.
Not all will be in the USA <sniff>

    Standardardbred Championships - Breeder's Crown

It all comes down to the Breeder's Crown.

The Standardbred Championships starts tonight at the Meadowlands at the swamp in Secaucus, NJ.

Tonight (Friday 10/29/2021) will be the 2YO Championships for Fillies and Colts, Trotters and Pacers.
    The PPs are provided here:
    http://playmeadowlands.com/uploadedF...s/mxx1029p.pdf
The races are likely to be shown on TVG.

Walner is a breakthrough first year sire for Trotters. He was a revelation as a race horse, but was injured just as he was peaking during his 3YO year.

On Saturday, 10/30/2021, will be the 3YO and Aged Championships in all classes.
    PPs are provided here:
    http://playmeadowlands.com/uploadedF...s/mxx1030p.pdf
The races will be shown on FS2.

Anyone out there (besides me) care?

The week before the Breeder's Cup and the pickings are.. fairly weak, but not empty.

Pet Peeve. September 18, Churchill Downs ran a very nice race for 2YO colts called the Iroquois. This weekend, Belmont Park will run a restricted race for 2YO fillies called the Iroquois. I suppose that tracks can call these races anything they want but jeez!!! Do I have to use context when figuring out what race is what. Conceivably, a filly could have entered both races and won both Iroquois races.. oh fun. This isn't the only name that is used multiple times by multiple tracks.

The nice race horse Americanrevolution is in the Empire Classic at Belmont on Saturday:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
[Pletcher URL above, Saturday Oct 30, 2021, Race 9, PPs]
This son of Constitution finished 3rd to Hot Rod Charlie and Midnight Bourbon in the Pennsylvania Derby the last time out and should handle these NY Breds.

If you're looking for a scary race, the Sleepy Hollow is Race 3 at Belmont:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
[Pletcher URL above, Saturday Oct 30, 2021, Race 3, PPs]
This is a NY State 2YO race.
If you're familiar with the legend of Sleepy Hollow, you know about Tarrytown. I spent a night in Tarrytown to visit a friend, and have visited several times. Most people have their heads.

From the "Where Are They Now" section:
NY Traffic is racing in the 5th race at Belmont:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
[Saffie Joseph URL above, Saturday Oct 30, 2021, Race 5, PPs]
He has only won an Optional Claimer since finishing well back in last year's Preakness, but looks like he has the ability to do well at this shorter, non-route distance (assuming he is in good health).

Also, some familiar older horses who are not Breeder's Cup worthy are in at Keeneland in Race 9, the Hagyard Fayette (someone's favorite, surely):
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
[Brad Cox URL above, Saturday Oct 30, 2021, Race 9, PPs]

Forgot to mention that Essential Quality and Maxfield's next race will be their last. Both will be headed to Jannabel Stud in Kentucky to stand Stud.

Essential Quality had some family news this week. His (Uncle Mo) half-sister (named Famed) won her maiden race in her second start by 7 lengths:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on

Firenze Fire will also be going to stud after the Breeder's Cup, in Japan.

AmericanRevolution dominated in the Empire Classic by 11 lengths (on a SLOPPY Belmont racetrack):
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1454553213022113795

Shipsational won the Sleepy Hollow by 1/2 length (I wanted to say by a HEAD):
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on

NY Traffic trounced his field by 8
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on

Independence Hall won the Hagyard Fayette. Apparently he REALLY likes the slop.
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on

AmericanRevolution and Independence Hall capped off a really good day for sire Constitution, who would appear to be a mud sire.

Perfect Sting won the Breeder's Crown for 3YOC at the Meadowlands yesterday.
By doing it, he became the first colt in 20 years to win the Breeder's Crown as a 2YO and 3YO.
Perhaps this will portend well for Essential Quality who will attempt to become the very first to win the 2YO Juvenile Colt Breeder's Cup and the Breeder's Cup Classic as a 3YO! We'll see in 6 days.

I watched a lot of the Keeneland meet. The discussion of the dam of Marr Time was mind boggling to me. Mother of Into Mischief, Mendelssohn and Beholder, a mare who won over $4 mil. Has there ever been a better brood mare? And Marr Time won first time out by an admittedly not fast time. But the track was slower after several days of rain.

Getting pumped for the Breeder’s Cup. Normally I would watch Duke football over horse racing, but I have tuned out early the last few games. I think I have bet Essential Quality every race starting with last year’s BC. I will look at the others, but probably stick with him. These three year old colts have been a quality group. Interesting to me that the best of the group spent the winter at the Fairgrounds in New Orleans.

More random thoughts. Asmussen was hot at Saratoga and awful at Keeneland. Does that carryover to the BC? Finally what horses like or hate Del Mar? Also hoping Baffert goes 0 for whatever. Maybe Churchill will announce the Derby winner this week. LOL

Please provide some guidance for us amateurs.

Having the TVG app, and an extra TV, allows me to get my horse racing in, even with Duke sports. Somebody has to do it!!

The Baffert horse Arrogate HATED Del Mar! No magic wand (or elixer) there.

When I think of modern, top broodmares, I can think of few mares that have been better than Weekend Surprise. She sired two Preakness winners: A.P Indy (also a Belmont and BC winner) and Summer Squall. We know that A.P. Indy is a foundation sire and the great extender of the Seattle Slew line. Perhaps one of the great influences of classic speed in the breed today. Eavesdropper, Honor Grades, and Tiger Ridge are also sires she produced. Through her daughters, they produced Court Vision (sire). His blood flows through sires like Tapit. In this year's Breeder's Cup Classic, only Knicks Go, Stilleto Boy, and Hot Rod Charlie do not have Weekend Surprise in their pedigree.

Your main contenders are Knicks Go, Hot Rod Charlie, Art Collector, Medina Spirit, and EssentialQuality. Max Player is also a contender, but it depends on whether he gets a trip. Expect Knicks Go and Art Collector to be at the front with Medina Spirit and Hot Rod Charlie as close stalkers. Essential Quality may be a little behind, but he better not be too far back because at least one of those horses will not be backing up.

The weather should be dry and high '60s for Del Mar. Perfect for horses, spectators, and bettors.

    Blacker Handicaps the BC

For those of you who have time on your hands, want expert handicapping advice on the Breeder's Cup, or both, here is a video I tripped across that has Christina Blacker, TVG commentator and wife of trainer Dan Blacker, going through all 14 Breeder's Cup races. This is on YouTube so you can move forward/back to find the races that you want to know about. The PPs are available in this thread for you to enjoy the races to their fullest. Have at it.

Looks like favorites will be Albahr vs. Dakota Gold.

With all of the races for 2YOs, these will not be full races.

Just finished handicapping for today. I have some questions. Does it concern you Echo Zulu never gone around two turns? I agree with you about best two horses. Of course with lightly raced 2yo’s some might really improve today.

I thought the 8th is wide open. I didn’t see Cairo as overwhelming but I’m goingto look again. I have a real hard time judging the Europeans.

I was getting excited that Baffert didn’t have his usual strong contingent then I got to the 9th. Ugh, he has more than one who could win. There is a lot of early speed in this race. JC never around two turns, problem or not? So I may try to find a closer who will pay better. Probably I’m just overthinking. I may hold my nose and bet Corniche. I hope he got his race day drugs.

I agree on the 10th. Caton made a point that horses from Monmouth maybe over perform because they are used to doing it all on their own since they have not been whipped.

Tizthe Bomb did something last time I don’t remember seeing. He broke through the gate, admittedly did not get far, but he won! If I get some odds I may play him again, although I agree the other two are probably better.

Hopefully we all have some winners and make money! As usual I will be l playing small money.

The europeans do win sometimes, but historically they have a tough time of it here. I'm OK with any Euro that has raced already though.

One Monmouth horse I like is Dakota Gold in the 10th. Top speed figures. Albahr is a Euro, but has already had one great start in the USA, so qualifies in my book.

I get the adage that going 2 turns for the first time might put a horse at a disadvantage, but so many of these horses are new to the experience, I don't know if it makes a difference. The Euros have the most experience, and they tend to run longer. Today's horses are 2YOs, they mostly have 2-4 starts. No maidens. Most have an improving progression. Some are going longer for the first time; just as much of a handicap I'd think.

B Cox did great last year, so I'd look to him if all other things are equal. And I'd stay with the top jockeys like Irad Ortiz and Flavian Prat. Especially Prat who knows Del Mar well.

    My picks for today are:

    Race 6 - 8 - Averly Jane
    Race 7 - 6 - Echo Zulu
    Race 8 - 5 - Bubble Rock
    Race 9 - 1 - Jack Christopher
    Race 10 - 3 - Dakota Gold

    Probably 3 Post Time favorites.

    Also of note today:
Del Mar Race 1 - Triple Tap, Tapit half brother to American Pharoah races

Del Mar Race 5 - Joker Boy races

    Wanna bet on Coach K???
Coach K Hanover is undefeated and is in Race 1 at the Meadowlands on Saturday. PPs on request.

Just started looking at these. I’m not sure I can remember so many great speed horses in one race as the Classic. EQ looks like the most versatile. I’m still upset with his Derby trip, but he did get bumped at the start. Obviously Cox likes Saez on this horse. Somebody is going to cry uncle in this race. I know a lot of commentators don’t put much stock in bullet works, but I do. I think it indicates the horse is in peak form. Of course some trainers never like to work a horse too fast, so you have to know the trainer. I’m sticking with EQ, just hope a lot of bettors try to beat him so I get some odds. How I would like the morning line of 3/1.

I remember Risen Star got stuck way back in traffic, and would have been the Triple Crown winner that year if not for terrible traffic. Not that it mattered. He couldn't breed his way out of a paper bag.

Triple Tap (1/2 brother to American Pharoah) just won his second lifetime start in 1:08 2/5 after spotting the field 6 lengths on the backstretch. He is still undefeated and will bear watching. Although he is a 3YO already, so he must have health issues. Note that he is trained by Mr. Baffert. This was ONLY a $40k optional claimer.

Jack Christopher is scratched. Looks like Corniche will be odds-on today. Let's see if he can get near the rail on the first turn.

The last race today was a disaster. I had an exacta box with the 1,2 and 4 Tiz The Bomb. Of course 2 was scratched, someone screwed up and tried to scratch #1. I ultimately went with the Bomb and Dakota Gold. Fortunately I placed win/place on the Bomb which paid $25. for a $2.00 bet. Modern Games was clearly the best, but no payoff. This was maybe the craziest thing I have ever seen at the track.

It will be interesting to see who takes over training Baffert’s potential Derby horse Corniche.

The 8th which I knew was wide open blew up my late pick 5 and pick 4. I should have gone all in, but I am a cheapskate. So I could pick winners, just not get the second place horse for my exactas. Oh well, there’s always tomorrow.
