That being said, how did the last second cancellation of the NCAA tournament get handled financially last year? Did the networks and NCAA still get paid and the advertisers basically were stuck with many fewer viewers of their ads than expected? Or did the networks have to do make-goods for not delivering the audiences that were expected?
The NCAA has insurance to cover a good chuck of the missed tournament money but athletic departments took a beating. Budget cuts, voluntary salary reductions and the elimination of some non revenue sports. At one point the NCAA had an emergency fund but setup a legal fund with half and distributed the other half to schools. One would think institutions of higher learning would not like paycheck to paycheck.
