Maybe these are the Droids you are looking for

Forget Star Wars, this is real. Boston Dynamics has been posting videos of their robots for years, each one more elaborate and even a bit scary at times when you consider the mechanics and processing power required to make these things work. This one, however, is pure fun and yet jaw dropping at the same time.

With that song, it's like a robotic Dirty Dancing. Nobody puts BB-8 in a corner!

I remember dancing to that song.

I don't remember dancing that well.

Could this possibly be in the running for "most expensive music video ever made"?

If they had to buy those droids, perhaps. They didn't even have to lease them. Just some payroll...

    But, yeah.

By the usual standards for determining "most expensive music video" in this case it would be the cost to develop the droids and then set up the dance moves.

If that's the standard, it may well be!

Unless using film of an Apollo launch counts. Or a nuclear bomb over Japan. Or... Where does that line get drawn?

No idea. I recall several of the "most expensive music video" examples used the dollar value of the cars involved (despite the fact that the cars weren't actually purchased for the video). Presumably they didn't also count the cost of every building or road that was included in the video, so...is there a line that can be sussed out from that? Or maybe its all just done arbitrarily whenever someone wants to make a "most expensive" claim, I guess.

I know all about THE SINGULARITY and all that and I sure don't want the descendants of these robots arguing for their second-amendment rights. But this is some of the best three minutes around in a time and place where great three-minutes are in great need. Kudos to the folks who put this together.

It's not the processing power that is impressive. It's the control systems.

I haven't kept up to date with robotics, so maybe this wasn't anything remotely new, but I was impressed/surprised by the execution of the jumps.

This video showed much better controls than anything I've seen before. I was amazed by the videos of resistance to toppling (via kick/push) a few years ago, and this stuff is far, far beyond that. Really incredible.

    See Spot jump rope

Here is the latest video from Boston Dynamics. Not as fun as the dance routine, but still very impressive:
