It's surprising that it doesn't happen more often. Many women softball pitchers wear headgear. The extra distance in baseball is apparently enough to provide reaction time.

It was beyond disturbing. I've seen pitchers get hit by line drives but never before had I seen a pitcher immediately have what looked like a seizure. It was very upsetting. I'm so happy and relieved he is doing well.
