Glad to say that Kansas was ahead of the times - the first female mayor was elected 4/4/1887 in Argonia, KS. Her name was actually put on the ballot as a prank by men that were against women in politics. They hoped she would lose and women would be humiliated. Fooled them - the Women's Christian Temperance Movement abandoned their preferred candidate and voted en masse for Mrs. Salter. The Republican Party also voted for her. She won 2/3rd of the vote. She served 1 year and was paid $1.
