The Jurgensens.
(we are a Duke board, after all)
Though it sounds like a sitcom. Hey, all the more fitting!
As an Eagles fan I usually called them the Deadskins.
Maybe just the Red ala Syracuse Orange or Big Red.
Or Admirals since Generals has been taken.
Senators taken.
Red Pandas
Red Foxes have a problem.
Gridlocks ? Beltways?
Your idea? The owner needs help with this, and lots of other things.
SoCal
The Jurgensens.

The Washington 95ers or 495ers.
I'm an old Philadelphia Iggles fan, too, so I'll cast a second vote for Deadskins.
[redacted] them and the horses they rode in on.
Washington Warriors. Nobody gets hurt, and it's macho..
I like the new Seattle NHL team - th Kraken. It's bold, regionally interesting, historic, but has nothing to do with race.
How about the Washington Potomac? Not everything has to be anthopomorphic.
My favorite of the possibilities that have been mentioned as serious contenders is Redtails...honors a really cool piece of American history, transforms the racial connotations of the team name from a negative into a positive, and opens the possibilities for some super cool branding and iconography, plus it slots right into the fight song.
I love this logo mockup:

The Washington Bribes.
The Washington Insiders.
The Washington Swamp.
Washington Riverboats.
They'll have to change it again when they get a new coach, but whatever.
I like this a lot, too, although the jokes from opposing teams practically write themselves if they have yet another mediocre to poor season.
But the idea behind it is awesome, and I really like the logo. I could rock a shirt with that on it, even if they continue to suck (which they probably will until Snyder sells the team).

The George Washington Carvers
The Capital Punishers.
(Okay, maybe not)
I thought they would've gone with 'Washington's Team of Football', which would've made more sense.
WTF.
I agree that "Warriors" is quite unlikely, for the reasons mentioned above.
Another supposedly frontrunning candidate I really like (though not as much as Redtails), is Redwolves (Or Red Wolves; not much clarity as to how it might be styled). This one seems especially likely in light of the recent reports that the preferred new name is mired in a trademark foulup. Arkansas State University and the Chattanooga Red Wolves, a 3rd-division pro soccer team, both currently claim trademarks on the name. ASU was first to adopt it (in further connection to this overall story, they adopted the nickname in 2008 after switching from "Indians") and the university and soccer club are already locked in a trademark battle of their own.
Here again, there's at least one logo mockup I really like:

It's pretty interesting that this is the second DC team to change their name due to public opinion in the last 25 years.
Q "Why do you like Duke, you didn't even go there." A "Because my art school didn't have a basketball team."
