RIP Congressman John Lewis

So, I went ahead and uploaded the videos I produced for the ATL Airport. Remember that these are museum exhibit videos, designed to sorta slowly waft over you as you also admire items in the museum display cases, not something that rivets your attention to the exclusion of all else. Also, the test is designed to be on screen for a long time so folks who are walking by have plenty of time to see it.

Anyway, only one of the videos has audio because having competing audio from multiple videos would be silly in a small exhibit like this. Here is the audio one, which is made up of a couple of commencement speeches Lewis gave.

The image at 5:05 is quite literally the moment where Lewis gets beaten by police at the Edmund Pettus Bridge, one of the defining moments of the civil rights movement..

So, it has been a couple years since I watched that video... goodness gracious, what a powerful speaker he was. I spent the entire back half of the video in tears. It is almost impossible not to be moved by his words.

I was wondering about this, and hopeful that it would happen.

The body of civil rights icon Rep. John Lewis will lie in state at the US Capitol, a form of ceremonial tribute to honor the lives of American statesmen and military leaders.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Thursday announced plans for Lewis' body to lie in state in the US Capitol Rotunda next week with an invitation-only arrival ceremony on Monday at 1:30 p.m. ET.

To be fair, his twitter feed is probably run by staff.

I'm a little late on this, but I feel compelled to point out that Rubio apparently made the exact opposite mistake when Cummings died last year.

There has never been a more fitting tribute than the now oft-floated idea of renaming that bridge for John Lewis. It is worth adding the Edmund Pettus was a senior officer in the Confederate Army and a Grand Dragon in the Ku Klux Klan, so it is not like we would be renaming something that is already named for a great American hero and statesman.
