But it wasn't a throwaway comment. At the time, it was the narrative uninformed analysts parroted about Duke, and fit in perfectly with the anti-Duke sentiment that was common among the media and fans. Gottlieb articulated that parroting quite memorably, which he does get credit for; but also why he's the guy remembered as being alarmingly wrong.

To think guys like Nolan, Mason and Miles (who were starters at the time of the quote if my memory holds) were alarmingly unathletic is ridiculous.

Miles got drafted into the NBA on pretty much athleticism alone!

I have nothing for or against the guy and don’t listen to sports radio/tv generally. To me, his comment was much like the huge banner “Dewey Defeats Truman!” headline and the like — an example of something stated in hyperbolic certainty that ended up being laughably wrong.

I don’t dislike the guy for saying it. But I’ll always chuckle at the memory of him doing so.

An NCAA Championship banner is the best revenge.

I don’t listen to him, or many others like him. But has he ever apologized? Said he was wrong? Put it in context? Admitted the racial/ generalization and said he was sorry?
