Steward. Not Stewart. We need to get this right folks.
Happy to have Jim on the board to correct spelling errors.

Steward is still better overall player than McClung.

Steward, Christie and Keels are all still better than McClung.

That remains to be seen. McClung has played two seasons of college ball, competing against some of the best teams and players in the country. Steward, Christie, and Keels have played 0.

    More Michigan transfer news

Michigan has landed a familiar face, Wake's Chaundee Brown.

Brown is on the surface a sit-one, play-one transfer, with one year of eligibility remaining and not a grad transfer. But there is the possibility he gets a waiver given the coaching turnover at Wake. If he plays this coming season, he'd provide much needed depth on the wing for Michigan given the transfers out of the program. If he sits a year, him and Nojell Eastern would provide a nice core to build a young team around in 2021, as both have 2-3 years starting experience in Power 5 basketball.

It's a nice recovery from Howard after three transfers out earlier this summer.

Apparently Brown will be applying for a waiver. That would be big for Michigan's prospects this season, as he would potentially slot right into a starting lineup that could include:
—A senior PG in Eli Brooks who, while limited offensively, started his entire junior year, showed a solid 3 point shot, and was a defensive stalwart
—A sophomore wing in Franz Wagner who many expect to push for first-round draft pick status in 2021
—A senior wing/PF in Isaiah Livers (assuming he returns from the draft, as he by all accounts should) who was one of the best players in the B1G when healthy this past season
—A duo down low of RS Senior Austin Davis and blue-chip prospect (and former Duke recruit) Hunter Dickinson.

Brown getting the waiver would allow grad transfer Mike Smith to slot into a more comfortable role as the primary guard off the bench, rather than being thrust into a big role as a potential starter. Returning junior Brandon Johns is a swiss-army knife off the bench as well, and played big minutes as a sophomore while Livers was hurt. Plus there are two more Top-100 recruits in PG Zeb Jackson and wing Terrence Williams who could carve out a role.

That's a team that should compete for a Big Ten title, and thus potentially be relevant on the national stage. The waiver process for Brown will be a big storyline in the B1G during this never-ending offseason.

The NCAA has rejected a special, blanket waiver of the transfer rules to allow a "one time transfer without sitting out" for this upcoming season. Instead, it will defer the issue to consideration next January through the normal "legislative" process -- in NCAA-speak it "approved a resolution ... that outlined its intention to adopt by January a comprehensive legislative package" to address transfer eligibility issues. http://www.ncaa.org/about/resources/...fer-resolution

In particular, it appears the NCAA would like to get out of the business of having to evaluate the massive influx of "waiver" requests in recent years (which is not only burdensome for them but subject to criticism as having been applied seemingly arbitrarily and inconsistently) -- seems to me they have two choices: (1) eliminate waivers and continue the 1 year sit-out rule or (2) remove the 1 year sit-out rule for the first transfer, so there's no need for a waiver system.

In any event, this does allow at least a little more clarity re next year's rosters, subject only to remaining individualized waiver requests for, most notably, the Wake transfers arising from Manning's firing: Sarr to Kentucky and Brown to Michigan.

Indiana's Justin Smith is grad transferring. Solid starter for Miller that averaged 10 points and 5 rebounds last year.

While I expect these 3 to be good players it is a mistake to throw McClung under the bus as someone who would not be an important asset wherever he could go.

Former Purdue player Eastern did not get accepted into Michigan, reopening his recruitment.

Reading the article, doesn't sound like Painter will welcome him back with open arms.

Pretty big news for Wojo and Marquette, as Ohio-State transfer DJ Carton is eligible immediately for them next year

And this reminds me fondly of Phil Henderson, who also planned to transfer, but returned to Duke and had one of the most underrated senior seasons that I have witnessed at Duke. The underrated comment of course is just my humble opinion.

One game that stands out in my faded memory was the win vs UCLA in the NCAAT when he had 28 and it seems carried us a for a long stretch when Laettner was in foul trouble. That team never reaches a final four if he doesn't return.
