Top Movies of Spring (a twist on the usual boxoffice contest)

So, here is the reality... we use these little boxoffice contest threads as a fun place to rib each other about how good (and bad) we all are at guessing the future of various movies... but it also turns into a place to talk about major movies hitting theaters and what we all think about them. I'd hate for us to go a few months without having a generic movie thread to collect our thoughts.

In that spirit, I am launching a new contest for the months of March and April (which are too soon to be part of the summer contest). Your task will be to guess which films will finish first and second at the boxoffice among all the movies released in those two months. You must correctly identify the top two films and the order in which they will finish!! Here are your choices for the poll.

    Onward (1st) - March 6th release date
    A Quiet Place II (1st) - March 20th
    Mulan (1st) - March 27th
Bond 25: No Time to Die (1st) - April 10th
    Other film not listed (1st)
    Onward (2nd)
    A Quiet Place II (2nd)
    Mulan (2nd)
Bond 25: No Time to Die (2nd)
    Other film not listed (2nd)

To be clear, you will vote for 2 films... 1 to finish first and 1 to finish 2nd. If you think something else released in March or April (Trolls World Tour, The New Mutants, The Hunt, The Invisible Man, Bloodshot are contenders) will finish first or second, then pick "Other"

The voting will close on Sunday March 1. All boxoffice totals will count until the last of the March/April films close or until I call it as the winner is obvious.

    Any questions?

Interesting that we are getting no love so far for A Quiet Place II. The original made $188 million, which is not too shabby. By comparison, Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace both came in about $20 mil less than that and Spectre only beat it by about $12 mil.

Also very little love for Onward. Ya'll are aware it is a Pixar film, right? I mean, if you count the number of Pixar films that have made less than $200 million, you won't even get to your pinky.

Ummm... my Wolfpack friend... you did not vote. You have to check two boxes in the poll at the top of the thread to indicate your votes.

Verbal/written ballots are not counted ;0

Mulan and Onward in that order.

I think Quiet Place II looks too different and too much of a late season Walking Dead knockoff to generate the same kind of appeal the first one did.

Going with Onward (1st) and Other Film Not Listed (2nd)

I'm sure Mulan will make tons, but it doesn't seem to have quite the same appeal that the animated version had. So, I'm hoping for a surprise run by somebody else.

Here's a look at release dates for those two months.

I have voted... and while we seem quite divided about all our picks (including several "other film" picks where I would love to know what folks are banking upon) there is one consensus that we have... no one thinks Quite Place 2 will make waves in this contest.

I'll state the obvious (sign language would be appropriate) if no one can hear it, can it make a noise?

I like Trolls World Tour. But no clue and I don't keep up with this stuff. I see lots of kids every day who tell me what they want to see. They're still watching every Star Wars back to back right now.

US cinema chain Regal has revealed that the 25th Bond film will clock in at 163 minutes – that's two hours and 43 minutes...
Ugh. A run time like that keeps me at home. Not that others won't flock to it, but I'll wait til it streams and check it out over two nights.

It will be interesting to see if coronavirus fears mute the box office of some of these movies? Obviously the large Chinese market is gone for the time being.

Yep. It won't affect the US market (I don't think...maybe it will now) but Disney is losing tons of wontons in China with Mulan. Talk about some seriously lousy timing.

Sad to say but this contest has been canceled. The James Bond film, No Time To Die, has been moved from an April release to November. Theater across the world, especially in Asia, are I'm a real wanker for saying this.I'm a real wanker for saying this.I'm a real wanker for saying this.I'm a real wanker for saying this. down or in a major slump because of the Coronavirus and Universal has decided it wants to wait to release NTTD at a time when it can maximize boxoffice returns.

The departure of this film from our contest is not a minor move. It completely changes virtually every guess we made so I am shutting it down. Just does not make sense any longer. Sorry...
