New York City public schools factor 4th and 7th grade attendance into middle school and high school admissions. I think it is based on brackets, ie under 5, 5-10, etc. So during those years, kids get sent to school sick. Of course, as I understand it, if your kid shows up and leaves after 5 minutes they count as present, so if your kid can get out of bed, you can send them then pick them up 20 minutes later.

They have already announced that this criteria was cancelled for this school year. The standardized tests that were also a criteria were also canceled so no one knows what the criteria will be.

Working while sick is a badge of honor for many Americans. It’s ingrained into our work culture. It will be hard to break that habit.
About 60% of my life has been spent working in Europe and South America. I have pretty much always gone into work with a cold and I have never been badgered to go home by colleagues anywhere else. Just here in the US. That’s until about the end of February and ever since then I am firmly on board with the philosophy.

It better change from here on out. I'm sure it's there so they don't "reward" students who skip school but it's bad policy. Teachers usually know who is skipping school and who is home sick. Ask them.

Texas as at 0.92 yesterday, so something may have changed with their calculations. It is now above 1.00. I suspect it was the inclusion of anti-body tests that the state was including. Those have since been broken out separately. I know here in San Antonio, those numbers have not been included. I haven’t seen the 7 day rolling average of new cases, but it is likely been flat to slightly down over the last two weeks.

Finally, something I understand and agree with on this thread!

At the risk of turning this into a thread exclusively about brownies... the crispness of brownie edges deserves at least a little attention here.

Chewy brownies and good lasagna are both triumphs of the human spirit, but the edges. The edges compel one to consider the existence of a higher power.

    Okay, back to COVID-19.

Sheltering in place brought on by the pandemic has led me to consider the nuances of brownies more thoroughly. I would agree that the crisp/crunch on the edges of brownies is a plus, a nice counterpoint to the chewy interior. It must be just a hint and highlight however. You don't want a crispy calamity.

Went out to dinner at our favorite ribs place - Bobby Rubinos - in Pompano Beach. In celebration of getting sit down restaurant food for the first time in months, we had a desert of a Brownie with vanilla ice cream, chocolate topping and a generous dousing of whipped cteam. The low cal, healthy (mental) treat was consumed with gusto as a followup to the baby back ribs. Ahhh.

Not sure when I'll feel comfortable enough to eat in a restaurant. We had some family get togethers this weekend. This was the dessert for 2 of the dinners. fc71do071-03-main.jpg

Trump threatens to move GOP convention out of NC if Gov Cooper cannot immediately guarantee they will be allowed to pack the venue to the rafters.

    https://www.cnn.com/2020/05/25/polit...ion/index.html

At current course and speed, based on the reported statewide data trends, I can’t see how a tightly packed convention center would be conducive to reducing the spread of COVID. Obviously, it could be quite the opposite. As a North Carolinian in the at-risk category, I sure hope the governor continues to make decisions, including this one, based on best available pandemic data and known science.

Comfort yourself with knowing that most of those attending national political conventions are from out of state?

Seriously, I agree. Can't see how one can guarantee anything about late August.

But most of the male and female escorts - and other service providers - are local

Losing the convention would be an economic blow but, from a public health viewpoint it would be a positive.

Yes, I know. Just a bad attempt at humor.

Holding a packed convention seems like a very bad idea right now, just like playing an MLB game before a stadium full of fans. Maybe in early August it will look better, but there's a strong possibility it won't.

NC, and Charlotte, has already dealt with dealing with losses from sporting events, concerts, and other public corporate gatherings. If it were the ONLY event cancelled or cut back in the last few and coming months, it could be a bigger deal, but honestly, those folks have been showing their survival skills for a while now.
Also, there is this little snippet. It's obviously a bit dated now, since it was from 2004, but it's interesting.

Trump’s financial threat against Charlotte may also ring hollow. A study of political conventions between 1972 and 2004 by economists at College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts found no discernible improvement in employment or personal income in host cities.
